I'm in lockdown in Spain ask me anything
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:25
Just that. On day 9 of Europe's srictest lockdown.
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:28
That's a hard question. I guess, do your best to adjust mentally if it comes to it. There's lots of resouroces for things to do (exercise online, learning online etc) but psychologically it can be hard.
Use technology to keep in touch with people, face time, skype. Lack of contact can be hard.

Who all remains at work? Is it just health Service And grocery shops? And obvs the emergency services ?
faw2009 · 22/03/2020 21:31
Are carers still allowed to go and care for people who live in their own home? What happens if those being cared for develop a cough?
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:36
Essential services, so those involved in food production, transportation, food shops, health service.
All restaurants and bars are closed. No take away service. Hotels have all been shut since a couple of days after lockdown.
All gyms, hairdressers (hairdressers were omitted from the list at first, but most of them voluntarily closed and then the government changed the conditions so they clsoed too).
Lots of places that are allowed to be open (I think vets can be open) are using extreme social distancing, like only allowing one person in at a time, keeping everyone at least 1 m apart, using masks and gloves.
Supermarkets make you wear gloves and limit the numbers allowed in. You are asked to pay by card wherever possible.
Schools are not open at all.
Public transport has been reduced by about 50%
Most businesses are working from home.

How does the lockdown vary across the country. Is it less strictly enforced in rural areas?
MrsTerryPratchett · 22/03/2020 21:37
What are they doing with he homeless, who have nowhere to isolate?
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:38
Are carers still allowed to go and care for people who live in their own home? Yes, it's one of things we are allowed to go out to do
What happens if those being cared for develop a cough? we phone the special corona helpline and they tell us what to do. Nobody is supposed to go to the doctor's surgery, you are asked to call the helpline and they tell you what to do.
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:39
How does the lockdown vary across the country. Is it less strictly enforced in rural areas? I would say no, in may experience. I live in a village outside a city and the locla police patrol every day and check the people they see out and about are out for reasons on the list. We get daily updates on social media of how many were talked to or fined or whatever.
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:40
What are they doing with he homeless, who have nowhere to isolate? I think as many as possible are in homeless shelters, but I'm no entirely sure.
AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/03/2020 21:40
Is that photo of the Spanish army actually representative of their military, or a hoax?
(Yes I'm shallow)
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:42
Are you allowed to go out for a walk? No. No walking or jogging. You can walk the dog, but are suposed to stay close to home, just wee/poo and back home. If you are spotted by the police they can ask you where you live and if it's a long way from your home address (I've heard more than 400m) you can be fined. We don't have a dog so not been testing it out.
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:43
Is that photo of the Spanish army actually representative of their military, or a hoax? haha, I don't know the photo you mean, I guess you think they're fit? :)

Hi @BirdandSparrow I'm also in Spain I've had more fun weeks, but we're adjusting now, I hope you are too.
In answer to MrsTerryPratchett in Madrid homeless have been housed in part of the IFEMA which is a huge trade centre (it's where the COP25 was held not long ago). Other parts of the IFEMA are being turned into a 'field hospital' designed to treat over 1000 people.
Letseatgrandma · 22/03/2020 21:46
Schools are closed then?
Not quite like here! Some schools have hundreds and hundreds in hubs tomorrow.
I wonder if we lockdown in England, how that would affect schools?!
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:46

Hope you're adjusting OK, it's hard xx
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:47
What is your job and can you work now? I work from home as a translator so it doesn't mean a change for me, except.....that I've had very little work since this started and I'm self employed. Also my work is based around me being able to work while the kids are at school so that's going to be a big adjustment.
LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 22/03/2020 21:48
Do you know anyone who has died? I think the reason people in the uk are ignoring warnings is because they aren't seeing many people around them ill yet. It's been very frustrating seeing people carry on as normal.
BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 21:48
Schools are closed then? Yes, in most of the country schools were completely shut down on Friday 13th. Madird was a bit earlier.
