So far I’ve thought of:

Drug addicts that normally shop lift to get money, what will they do?

People living a double life, they’ll have to choose one family to isolate with.

Err that’s all I can think of, but surely there’s more?

OP posts:

New babies having less exposure to the normal range of germs needed to build healthy immune systems.

BeijingBikini · 24/03/2020 07:34

Saving might become more commonplace, rather than "oh but I couldn't possibly save on only 50k" while going on 3 exotic holidays and leasing a 20-plate BMW

FredaFrogspawn · 24/03/2020 07:57

Those people lucky enough to continue to be paid may well save more as there is little opportunity to spend.

Hopefully there will be more giving - food banks etc.

Might the USA be forced to rethink its health service? Just now on the radio someone from the NHS (can't remember who, sorry) pointed out that we have an advantage in the UK through having a NATIONAL health service - plans, policies, supplies are organised at a national level.

The USA has state for the art facilities for the rich but millions have no health insurance. They cannot possibly mobilise any coherent response, even just testing, with their expensive piece meal system. But everyone is at risk of catching this, even the Uber rich.

Depending how badly they are affected they may find they have to rethink public health policies.

A reduction in the spread of other infectious diseases (e.g. norovirus) because of all the hand washing

Realisation avocados are not an essential grocery item

Bit of a depressing one here - but older people more likely to be taken advantage of by entreprenurial 'doorstoppers'. My mum has just had this. A young lad who seemed quiet and respectable asked if she wanted the furniture out the front removing for £20. As she didn't know if the council bulky items service would be running she agrees and gave him £25 (I know, I know, but she's one of those older ladies). Of course he never came back to take the stuff. This might be how people afford drugs etc. while they can't beg or shoplift.

The80sweregreat · 24/03/2020 10:59

Sheila that is appalling but sadly what happens. My parents were the victim of con men 11years ago so I know how you feel. Utter scumbags

The way they did after Spanish flu and the Depression you mean ?

Oh no, they didn't. It was business as usual - only more so.

What weird shit might happen?

Hi BomBom, hopefully drug dealers won't actually benefit any more than usual. If drug users are in treatment, users in this county (Northants) have lock boxes organised so they can get their supply without having to approach the pharmacist and hopefully don't have to steal, attack etc. to get money for their habit.
Can't say about alcohol. I've got a couple of bottles of wine in the cupboard, I didn't like to stockpile!

Homebrewing might get a kick in the arse. (As well as home distilling, if people want 80%+ alcohol Grin).

Notusuallydown · 24/03/2020 16:47

I'm going to look like a badger! Wide silver streak down my parting!

Notusuallydown · 24/03/2020 16:49

Home distilling? that's one way of getting alcohol wipes!

DGRossetti · 24/03/2020 17:10

And indeed, gin Grin

Potterurotter · 24/03/2020 17:26

Definite increases in doorstep scammers... probably increases in online pornography of illicit kind as well if people can’t get their kicks out and about voyeurism wise.. wonder how rapists and violent offenders predisposed to violence will manage to control their compulsions and if this will likely increase too once restrictions are relaxed

NotFattyBomBom · 24/03/2020 17:27

Supermarkets will still sell hair dye though Notusually?

Postspecific · 24/03/2020 17:32

Workplaces that have previously objected to working from home because it’s impractical will have been proved wrong. I think they’ll be a sustained increase in home working even long term.

Postspecific · 24/03/2020 17:34

I think frugal food habits and saving will also be long term.

Notusuallydown · 24/03/2020 18:36

Supermarkets may sell hair dye, the trouble is getting it!

SimplySteveRedux · 24/03/2020 18:48

Rubbish/Recycling bins will overflow

SimplySteveRedux · 24/03/2020 18:51

Friday and Saturday nights are usually a great strain on A & E depts due to drinking, fighting, drug taking so I'd be interested to know what the effect of shutting pubs and clubs will be having.

My hospital is a major trauma centre. A&E admittance was down around 50% from regular traffic. (They have an app).

GabsAlot · 24/03/2020 20:00

usa will never have an nhs-they despise government run things oh except guns they all love guns

when charlie gard was in hospital they blame the nhssystem as to why his parents werent allowed to keep him on a ventilator thats how they think

i bet theyre begging for it now

The80sweregreat · 24/03/2020 20:02

Supermarkets sell hair dye!! Maybe not the colour you want tho..

DetroitLake · 24/03/2020 22:45

Gabs, not really the time to gloat over our situation out here in the US. Not a good look. The average Joe's/Anne in the street can be begging for medical care, and do. It's not our fault out leaders are heartless money worshipping so and so's.

We don't really like big government out here, bit more freedom of rights orientated, but this is hardly the time for division, is it?

HelgaHere1 · 25/03/2020 06:00

It seems that 9,500 British people have applied for jobs picking hops this year - normally there is just a handful.
Unexpected consequences!!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/03/2020 08:50

Like the canal in Venice are blue again

It's even happening here - there are so many more birds even in this very short time.

The world would not suffer if humanity disappeared - an the contrary.

Nature would reclaim and renew surprisingly quickly.
