@Parker231

If we banned the sale of alcohol, I'm positive we'd save hundreds of thousands of deaths a year from alcohol-related causes and free up lots of police and NHS time.

That doesn't mean it's the right thing to do in a free society.

Equally, we'd save thousands more lives if we closed all the roads. Lives should not always take precedence over freedom.

This is what happened in France

France went into full lockdown on Tuesday 17 March, with citizens banned from leaving their homes except to buy food or essentials, visit the doctors, or travel to a job that is certified as not being possible to do from home.

Citizens must carry a document that certifies why they are outside, which must be shown to security forces.

@StormyClouds - my DH is a GP currently working in A&E. If a lockdown means he will survive this virus, I’ll take any lockdown which is introduced. From Boris’s press conference today, I think it’s when not if and it’s cannot come soon enough for DH and his colleagues.

tryingtoprep · 23/03/2020 00:05

Too late now but isolating all vulnerable people might've been the least bad option. Those who don't live alone could've been evacuated (with one or both parents if a child) to holiday homes and parks.

SkiingIsHeaven · 23/03/2020 00:06

Although it will be hard to d

Cope with, I really think that it is needed.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 23/03/2020 00:07

Would we be able to go to our gardens?

AnotherMurkyDay · 23/03/2020 00:08

Yes

LimitIsUp · 23/03/2020 00:09

You lot can have lockdown in the cities, but we don't need it rurally.

jenkel · 23/03/2020 00:19

So what degree should the lockdown have, am I allowed to go food shopping, am I allowed to walk across the fields behind my house, can I work if I can be reasonably socially distanced.

jenkel · 23/03/2020 00:22

And just a shame we never banned alcohol and cigarettes as that’s prob killed way more than any virus, though I obviously know those people take that decision, and most of the people don’t make the decision to catch the virus apart from the stupid people that were out and about today

IamAporcupine · 23/03/2020 00:27

I fully agree that we should do everything to slow down the virus and the impact on the health system, but I must admit a lockdown terrifies me.

I have the feeling most people do not realise that once you give your freedom away, anything can happen. And I say this as someone who grew up under one of the nastiest dictatorships in South America...

Onacleardayyoucansee · 23/03/2020 00:28

No.

I think each person should decide according to their own conscience and circumstances.

If you are concerned, stay in.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 23/03/2020 01:31

Onacleardayyoucansee that approach will lead to thousands more dying unnecessarily.

Hugt · 23/03/2020 01:34

Yes, local parks etc are rammed currently, zoos near me are still open, food outlets are flouting rules. Its clear the current rules arent being followed

FlushedZebra · 23/03/2020 01:46

The problem with lockdown in the cities only, is that people flee to country - spreading it further, and putting pressure on local NHS/services. That exodus is happening already, and it really needs to be stopped.

Lockdown would mean you can go out to buy food - there have been no food shortages in Italy and Spain that I've heard of.

To learn from Italy, we would lock down all at once. Essential work (incl care for vulnerable people), food shopping and pharmacy only.

FlushedZebra · 23/03/2020 02:16

This is a good, simple, explanation of the infection rate of CV19, and why lockdown is needed. You can believe it, or not. Up to you. But this is the difference between CV19, and flu.

Gilead · 23/03/2020 02:28

Comparing alcohol and cigarettes to a pandemic is utterly ridiculous.

As for not needing a lockdown rurally, yes we do because people are camping etc. Did you not see the pictures of the Lake District?

Willow2017 · 23/03/2020 02:31

Onacleardayyoucansee
Apparently thousands of people in uk are too stupid to have a conscience.
How Many more have to die before they 'get it' and folliw guidelines?

Nat6999 · 23/03/2020 02:53

Yes probably within the next week at the latest.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2020 03:17

I m hoping tomorrow
Having Mother's Day yesterday was a blow as they must have known people would go out.

tangledhair · 23/03/2020 03:25

YES and without delay. Out for essential journeys only and security at supermarkets/food outlets as some people need educating on safe practice. It has to be done in the hopes of saving more people.

Town and rural areas, we must adapt to a new normal at this time. Never mind mental health, we need to survive first.

Joywillcomeagain · 23/03/2020 03:31

I actually think lockdown for my family would prevent a lot of arguing. I'll feel more relaxed if we lock down!! It took the pubs shutting to stop my stubborn 71 year old dad going. It was such a relief when he and my mum stopping snipping at each other about it.
Now he still goes out to shops and on buses my mom is terrified. She keeps asking him not to he doesn't listen, then they row, it's horrible!

He won't his hands properly because we have a water meter Hmm. There's an undertone all the time that he might snap' if we keep nagging him.
Take the choice out of his hands please!! He's putting the rest of us at risk and being a knob when we ask him not to.

effingterrified · 23/03/2020 03:37

Yes

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/03/2020 03:48

Yes!

People are being so irresponsible WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES!

SnuffleBadger · 23/03/2020 04:01
