Piss off out the countryside

orangeandbananas · 22/03/2020 13:00

Aibu to think the idiots who have all fled from towns to the countryside are incredibly selfish.
I live in a small rural estate.
There are quite obviously people from towns and cities coming together on gatherings suddenly 'embracing' the countryside.
Ok fine; but they apparently can't stick to the public footpaths where they can all infect each other. Instead they keep coming off the footpath and walking the mile to our estate from it and hanging about.
The average age on our estate is 70+. I don't know anyone else that is under 70 and many are 90+ I haven't seen anyone leave their houses for a long time but today I saw a very elderly frail man take a walk on the estate and he was leaning on a bench when a load of teenagers came right up to the boundary of the road to our estate and I saw the man try to get away but he couldn't fast enough and nearly fell over from trying.

We live in isolation anyway generally. This is the first time we've had to deal with so many people coming through our field off the public footpath.
I wish they'd stay away. I also wish less risk people would understand what social distancing means. If they're venturing into our estate I've no doubt they're off gallivanting on to further farms etc. Which can only heighten the problems we face today. These dc are not from the rural area. I've never seen so many cars parked near the footpath. It's so daft it's upsetting.

Boris has warned we will have to go to lockdown. Is this really what people want?
Get out of the countryside if you don't live here. It's obvious so many elderly people live here. Come back in better times.

I think it is simple. For non essential journals - If you are not walking to there from where you live don't walk there and if you are not cycling from where you live don't cycle there

And don't park your car on verges and in country lanes because the car parks are now shut - you are not following the rules above.

People in Wales are taking things into their own hands.

So we did have some young ones pull up in their cars last night never had this before. Loud music and probably never noticed our estate except I'm quite sure they were the morons walking up taking pictures of our homes etc. It's only a matter of time before the wrong type realise how vulnerable some of the villages are to crime too.
I hope we have lockdown soon. I don't know if the places that you can't get 2 meters away from somebody but I've heard London is empty at the moment so might be worth heading there.

I'd guess the Mountain Rescue are likely to be helping in various ways with residents who live in remote and inaccessible places. They certainly don't need extra people getting into trouble.

Its so sad. It's thoughtlessness, not malice - of course lots of people wanted a day in the sun somewhere lovely. But this is a time when we can't have what we want - those of us who are well enough for a day out should make the best of what we can do safely.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 08:46

@orangeandbananas where I live people were going for a walk in a city because they basically never saw it this empty... Cities are deserted

goldpartyhat · 23/03/2020 08:52

Well people are allowed out if they keep to the 2m distancing People do walk in twos and as a family group, but that's allowed

BadDaughter01 · 23/03/2020 08:59

I live in London and my Dad who is 72 lives in rural Northants. He's not well and together with my mum who is 67 are staying in as much as possible. My brother who lives nearby checks in with them from a safe distance. I call and use WhatsApp to keep in touch. There is nothing I, or my London family would love more, than to visit them. But DH and I are both key workers and are in contact with the public constantly. We don't know if we are already asymptomatic carriers of the virus. So we are NOT going to visit them because we'll spread it if we are.

People from London having jollies to the countryside are selfish morons. I'm sorry to everyone who has had to put up with thoughtless townies who see Covid-19 as an excuse to take an extended break to the countryside. They are risking lives. It boils my piss.

BerryCatHolly · 23/03/2020 09:08

The advice is also essential travel only. No need to get in the car and drive an hour plus to Snowdon/peaks/lakes/beach for a jolly.

Walk in your family group near your home location.

People are being deliberately selectively with what they take from the advice that's been given.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 09:10

I am starting to understand why is Boris so reluctant to actually enforce all the recommendations. There are people all over arguing that it's their human right to roam and go outside and go to shops and why are museums closed "it's just hysteria"........
There would be riots.
It looks like British public still mostly think they are more special than people in other countries and everyone outside UK is overreacting and is a bit of a moron.
Sadly, that will show on local death rates.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 09:11

And this comes from someone who usually likes Britain and stands up even for British food🤷🏻
big fan of cottage pie. Big fan

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 09:12

Government had to explain people that "visiting campsites and such" is NOT an essential travel.
We are all fucked

Torchwoodisready · 23/03/2020 09:20

We live in a tiny village about a mile out of town. We have a lot of pathways and bridleways, but very few people come out this way as the main paths are steep. I can usually do a 5k run and only see people on the 500m stretch that takes me onto the main road. Yesterday, we saw 10 separate groups out walking, a lot of them looking a bit lost and confused. Most were keeping their distance/stepping into gateways to let other people pass as far away as possible, but an elderly man tried to come over and talk to us until I reminded him, and two ladies walking a dog made no attempt to move to one side of the path or call their dog away, and seemed highly amused when I made the kids step back into the hedge to keep away. That seems to be a reasonable representation of our area - the vast majority behaving sensibly, with a small number not taking it seriously, or still not really understanding. The pathways round here are lovely and could easily take a couple of hundred of sensible people at any time, but most people seem inclined to head for well-known places. I think most of us round here would be pleased to see more people exploring the local area, rather than driving to busy spots - as long as everyone follows the rules.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 09:36

If Maccies and nandos closing doesn't tell people how serious this situation is, nothing will.
Nothing will!

Zombiemum1946 · 23/03/2020 09:42

A couple of hundred ? That's 1400 a week. What are the chances that every single one is sensible ? There's a high chance that at least 1 or 2 will be infected . Are your local medical facilities close by ?

Torchwoodisready · 23/03/2020 10:26

That's why I said sensible. If people aren't sensible, nowhere is safe to be. It would be far better for more people to be out walking on little-used paths, and practicing good distancing, than for thousands of people to descend on a few popular areas. That's what is going to be needed if people are going to continue to be allowed to exercise/get fresh air, rather than being in complete home lockdown - people using the outdoor space near to them in an appropriate way. Unfortunately, it's looking as though too many people can't be trusted, so the likelihood is that everyone is going to have that option taken away from them. We'll be okay in that situation - our neighbours have a couple of fields that we have access to - but most people don't have that option, so it's a massive shame that the families we saw out walking and keeping to themselves in a little-used area are likely to find themselves banned from doing so due to the actions of a bunch of idiots who decided it was a nice day for a trip to the seaside.

Torchwoodisready · 23/03/2020 10:33

And we're not the sort of place people would drive to. I'm talking about people who live within walking distance. Unfortunately, some of the people who could have safely gone for a walk around here were probably packed onto the beach about an hour's drive away.

swimster01 · 23/03/2020 10:39

Not everyone has green space by them, which is why so many people in the countryside make a good living by hiring out holiday cottages etc.Seems the truth is that the country folk don't want town people visiting unless they are spending money in their shops, restaurants, attractions etc.

Dashel · 23/03/2020 10:47

There is a massive difference between a walk in the countryside with a picnic from home and traveling to a well done tourist destination. If it’s busy on a weekend or bank holiday then stay the hell away.

There are miles and miles of public footpaths that are hardly used which would probably be quiet still, then there are The Chatsworth House, any National Trust property or land, the Forests, the beaches that have shops or cafes, all of which would be busy on a nice weekend so just don’t go there.

And ffs don’t meet up with people!

If you don’t think this pandemic is affecting you apart from food shopping then you are part of the problem

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 10:48

Everyone who is chilled about this, please click on world news section on news website. Obviously most British public doesn't really see what's happening elsewhere otherwise they would take this more seriously🤷🏻

BerryCatHolly · 23/03/2020 10:49

Many rural and coastal areas rely on tourism yes. Tourists are welcomed under usual circumstances.

We have a global pandemic and people are getting seriously ill from it.

What part of stay at home, don’t travel unnecessarily is hard to understand. This virus will cripple many small businesses in these communities but they are begging us to stay away so the virus isn’t spread there. They have put their communities And health before business.

Yet some people’s are trying to make this into a rivalry about town vs country?. Get over your hurt feelings and stay in.

Applejaxx · 23/03/2020 10:51

Not everyone has green space by them

Tough shit! You chose to live in a city then that’s a sacrifice you have to make.

We are not living in normal times and we are all having to make changes to our lives.

Mark my words people here are really angry by this and it will end in violence if people don’t listen to the advice.

Zombiemum1946 · 23/03/2020 10:53

It's about services and cross infection. Why don't people get that ? We simply don't have the services. Mountain rescue are saying to stay away. Ferries shutting to non locals. The army having to medi vac locals to hospital. What part of that screams visit rural areas. People are not sensible, example- mountain rescue and helicopter called out to men who'd gone to the Cairngorms wearing trainers and getting caught in bad weather. Services will and are stretched. People have accidents and get sick and that's fine in normal times. This is not normal and staff have been redeployed, non urgent services suspended.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 10:57

I have to admit I was waiting for reports of farmers going off at people, because they are trampling over their livelihoods while spreading deadly disease...

Ginnymweasley · 23/03/2020 11:05

People were arrested last night in anglesey for protesting outside a caravan park, the locals really are angry. Peoples want for green space does not trump peoples need for safety. Mountain rescue in wales have had to rescue at least 3 groups this weekend 1 of which ended up in hospital. They have better things to be doing, many of them are key workers and they are all volunteers. Its ridiculous.
