It would make sense to announce a lockdown later in the day.

woodencoffeetable · 23/03/2020 16:49

today in the park for the first time we have seen police chasing the yoof away from the playing fields breaking up groups of people.

most people are sensible and keep a good distance.

(in nl not uk)

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 23/03/2020 16:49

Horehound You're probably right. I think I'll need welding into my room to stop me hugging the dcs and dh,

Givemeabreakpls · 23/03/2020 16:50

I wish they would lock down but I am so confused as to whether or not they need the bill being debated now to pass through the Lords? Does anyone know if they have the power to lock down without it?

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 16:50

Is the UK testing post mortem?

I was reading an interview with the governor of Lombardia earlier about the mistakes made earlier that could possibly have stopped the devastation. The main one being that because the first mini outbreak was 2 tourists who were Chinese it was simply pushed to one side as something that wasn't ever going to be relevant to Italians.

Then the same "oh, it's a tiny hotspot, we've got it contained" assumption about the town of Codogno.

And of course followed by football matches still being played two-three weeks ago.

We have another new case in our town today, someone else who came from the north in the exodus but has apparently been in self isolation since and now tested positive.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 16:53

My aunt is currently with her daughter and family - should she stay there or go home to live alone with no family with walking distance and no real relationship with any neighbours. She is over 70 but not on the most at risk for health conditions. She is worried that if she got ill she rather not be at home alone.

Eyewhisker · 23/03/2020 16:53

The deaths stat isn’t increasing as fast as Italy and if anything should be higher at weekends. It is obviously tragic for the families affected, but there is hope that we may escape the worst

Pishposhpashy · 23/03/2020 16:53

It is not realistic for most of us to self isolate in our own homes (as in, away from other family members in the same house that is). Sorry but it just isnt going to happen here. We live in a 500sq ft flat with one toilet and a clingy four year old.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 16:54

Not fully - i think they could do a lot but not the order to self isolate.

NemophilistRebel · 23/03/2020 16:54

Yes I’m taking the deaths today as a positive that they aren’t going at the speed of Italy’s

Any deaths are tragic obviously but be thankful that some measures seem to be working

wintertravel1980 · 23/03/2020 16:54

Is the UK testing post mortem?

Yes. German doesn't (although apparently it should not be considered a primary differentiating factor).

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/18/lessons-can-britain-learn-germanys-successes-coronavirus/

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 16:55

We didn't have any bills passed. I imagine it comes under "things we can do in an emergency without asking anyone" All our special measures have been announced late at night I think to stop hysterical running to the shops or out of town. We all sit round the telly about 11pm waiting for the fuck-what-now moment.
You get blase after a bit. I didn't even bother watching Saturday's.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 16:55

@angryrant55 well are the rest of the family still doing things which could put her at risk? If yes, she should go home.

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 16:56

@wintertravel1980, thank you!

Pishposhpashy · 23/03/2020 16:57

What is the deal with the press conference today? Is it happening?

NemophilistRebel · 23/03/2020 16:57

Problem with us testing post morgen is there are deaths being recorded as Covid which actually would have been due to some other factor mainly and then Covid was secondary cause.

The office of national statistics will show whether there is a spike in deaths in March and coming months when they are officially released

Comparing the last week of February’s recorded figures for the U.K. against last years same week figures we are currently running at the same if slightly lower than last year

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 16:58

Italy can rule by decree in a way the uk can't

Helenj1977 · 23/03/2020 16:59

Dog groomers?? My dog is booked for tomorrow. Hand over will be outside. That's OK right??

defthand · 23/03/2020 16:59

It takes 3-4 weeks for someone to succumb to this disease. It’s too early for social distancing to have had any effect on the 54 deaths announced today.

AvocadoOwl · 23/03/2020 17:00

There is no way they are disorganised enough to schedule a BBC1 slot and then 'whoops' they can't make it. Cobra meetings always take place on Mondays, it's not as though it's a surprise thing.

I am assuming the B team were due on at the scheduled briefing again but they've decided to pull them because there are measures being announced that are beyond the B team remit.

The narrative will be 'because you've all been so naughty with the social distancing we've been forced to debate tough decisions all afternoon even though the lockdown date was decided days ago based on the figures and do a late press conference telling you xyz is introduced'.

Number12 · 23/03/2020 17:00

Homkaismycat what the fucking fuck. WTAF. What don't you understand. Google DR Jack and listen to him. Just listen to how broken he is doing his job as a dr in London, he is begging people to stay home. There are several young Dr's on life support right now, having treated people like you. STAY HOME.

Maybe your hairdresser has the virus, maybe the client before you gave it to her you have no idea, people spends hours in there.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 17:04

@Pishposhpashy there isn't one today's Boris is in an emergency cobra meeting and MAY speak later. But it's not set in stone.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 17:06

Wow at greggs closing - probably a little bit more pressure on supermarkets.

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 17:06

Ah ok Angry. Thanks!

VivaLeBeaver · 23/03/2020 17:07

Hubby has just had his hours dropped by 20%
