with some people I wonder how they ever managed to apply for a store card

In my experience the shop assistant is only too happy to fill in the form for you, presumably as they would get commission. They happily take the bank account details from a debit card. All that's needed from the customer is a scrawled signature and the date, dictated by said assistant. Sorry, off topic, rather.

Saucery · 23/03/2020 10:29

Cafes etc haven’t been helping either, by staying open so long. A few I follow on FB have stayed open as long as possible, maybe switching this weekend to take away service and outside seating, but still lots of customers gathering.
The ones that shut down early will still get my custom when this is all over. The ones who encouraged people to attend for Mother’s Day etc will not.

Morning all,

Have finished licking my wounds after getting a bit of a drubbing on the Airborne thread last night - the way to hell is absolutely paved with good intentions but apparently my big failing is that "being kind" when replying to genuine questions on a an internet forum from people who are already halfway to doing everything right but want clarification is a potential death sentence for the vulnerable - which is a bit ironic as I am so risk aware cos of my Mum ..... but never mind, today is a new day and I will tackle the new normal as pragmatically as I can.....

DP has just been told his non-essential business is shut for the duration...... so that's another risk eliminated hooray. I just said that if it means we get to live for the next 30 years together, even in a cardboard box, it's better than the alternative, but am confident (at the moment) it won't come to that......

So, just a wave of solidarity to you all, utter admiration for key workers and NHS etc , hope that those struggling for whatever reasons can find some small bit of happiness or respite while the country gets it shit together, and maybe today my quest for loo roll for my Dad and Step-Mum will result in a 9 pack of that particular holy grail.......

Skittlesss · 23/03/2020 10:47

I’m really pissed off with nursery staff doing private childcare for clients because their nursery has closed. It defeats the object, surely?

Hugt · 23/03/2020 10:52

My current irritation is the local zoo parks near me keep advertising about how they are a good place to socially distance, as they are huge areas (ignoring that people congregate round the exhibits not distribute evenly round the park lands, never mind the handrails, toilets and picnic benchs)

I did a quick google and yesterday lots of zoos were open

Old queen-everyone on here and in RL is stressy. Don't take it to heart.

Rinoachicken · 23/03/2020 11:00

For those thinking of fleeing to a second home/ holiday cottage etc - the government have today said DO NOT DO THIS

Just in case anyone was in any doubt as to the selfishness and unhelpful was of doing so...

Can I please ask?

In a lockdown situation would an ex partner still be able to collect his children for his access days?

Mine see their dad EOW. Will that still go ahead?

OldQueen1969 · 23/03/2020 11:03

@MurrayTheMonk

Thank you :) I'm quite a tough old bird so I won't dwell on it .... I'm seeing more nice than nasty stuff in general so am confident we will avoid the torches and pitchforks......

Stress does weird things to people, so while I'm not quite in Pollyanna territory I am working on curbing my batural Gothic cynicism and taking some comfort in dark humour in selected areas of the internet.....

Have seen your update and once again salute you x Situations like yours are the ones that should be giving people the right perspective - hope you're hanging in there and unmumsnetty virtual hugs x

A community group in my area asked for volunteers to fetch groceries for the elderly. After only a few days they’ve started getting complaints that some of the volunteers are absolute scallywags who’ve tried to charge a pensioner a fiver for a loaf of bread and pocket the difference. In one case a volunteer kindly brought groceries only for the pensioner to take them and say “thanks but I have no money to pay you”. Unsurprisingly they’ve had to stop because it’s too much work to vet the volunteers and put checks in place to avoid fraud.

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 11:19
Grin I've fallen out with John Lewis customer service this morn as I asked them to extend their 40% off and priority Waitrose hour to social care staff- like lots of other places offers just for those with NHS badges...admirable but social care always forgotten. They said ' it's largely for NHS staff who are coping with unprecedented demand' They got the rough end of my pineapple I can tell you!
SonjaMorgan · 23/03/2020 11:24

@petiolaris that is disgusting. In our area we are donating items, they are being stored in the village hall and then boxes are being sorted and sent to people who need them from there. We were told to self isolate (ending tomorrow thankfully) and couldn't get an online shopping slots. We had no money out so had to go to the shop to pick up some bits. I have seen people say that you should ask on Facebook but I am not giving my bankcard to a stranger, neither would I expect them to sub me for 2 weeks worth of groceries for a family of 5.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 23/03/2020 11:38

A bit of light relief..... I did Joe Wicks PE class with my toddler and split my jeansBlush wear flexible, loose clothes in these times.

picklemewalnuts · 23/03/2020 12:06

@petiolaris the authorities have been slow to step up.
We've a local scheme, people have to photograph the receipt, we do bank transfers and PayPal by preference. We have advice in place for cash.
It's not impossible to set up a reasonably safe system.

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 12:13

Metropolitan Police @metpoliceuk
We are aware of claims of NHS staff being deliberately targeted by criminals in London. The MPS is not aware of any recent reports of this nature. If you have direct knowledge of such a crime, please report it and we will investigate.

“71 new cases have tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 418, although the true number of cases is likely to be higher. Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is now circulating in every part of Wales.

“Four further deaths of individuals who have tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been reported to us, taking the number of deaths in Wales to 16. “

EveLevine · 23/03/2020 12:25

Aneurin Bevan have more cases than the rest of Wales combined :( Very concerning for such
a small area. Have a feeling the Gwent will be overwhelmed soon.

SistemaAddict · 23/03/2020 12:26

Are we expecting Big News from London today in terms of potential lockdown? My mum came to collect her shopping and had been watching or listening to the news and said we seemed to be heading that way. It's inevitable I think but has anyone heard it will be today?

Talia99 · 23/03/2020 12:34

My office has just closed for the duration. Most of us are either WFH already or if that isn’t possible on full salary at home but a skeleton staff (mostly people who could walk to work) was keeping the place running.

Not any more.

bananacakeZ · 23/03/2020 12:35

TheElements I'd vote for you

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 12:37

It's inevitable I think but has anyone heard it will be today?

Government apparently looking at the data today to see if its being observed (and looking at the death figures too no doubt). That would be consistent with planning a shut down as of tonight. But if figures are reasonable it may be tomorrow.

I suspect we will get it at some point but they may let it run a bit longer if death data is starting to come in a little

SistemaAddict · 23/03/2020 12:38

Thanks Red, that makes sense.
