www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/mar/22/no-10-denies-claim-dominic-cummings-argued-to-let-old-people-die

Original link was broken - story still stands. And it is terrible.

For a minute I thought the story had been nixed.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 01:22

Trump constantly calling it the Chinese Virus is apparently making Asian Americans get abused.

Hugt · 23/03/2020 01:25

Can i just complain abit here about a local cafe selling home made antiviral hand gel made from aloe vera and witchhazel, saying its better than anything else available in shops.

Gah! Ive reported it to trading standards but really feel for people who might buy it

Imerc · 23/03/2020 01:28

There's nothing wrong with natural medicine hugt, also it's up to the consumer to purchase or not

Horehound · 23/03/2020 05:31

A one year old gas it in Fiji :(

Horehound · 23/03/2020 05:38

@Imerc no, if you do it you're being very selfish
For example:

Alex Tiffin
@RespectIsVital
I live in the Highlands.

My parents, my children & my wife live in the Highlands.

There are 265,000 people who live in the Highlands.

There are 16 Intensive Care Beds in the Highlands.

There are 0 for young children.

Your holiday is not essential travel.

Please #StayHome

Eeyoresstickhouse · 23/03/2020 06:05

@allthesharks really? Omg I hope this true. I honestly do hope this true. That could be the only thing that saves me in this horrible situation.

The music finally went off at 1am. After being on since 4PM friday afternoon.

I will get onto our managing agents this morning and tell them this news.

Metoyoutoo · 23/03/2020 06:29

Why? For a bit of Tory bashing? Assuming it’s true, which I highly doubt, it’s one person. Don’t taint the whole government

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 06:30

Oh Breton :( lots of love...

And Imerc and Nelly...I do feel for you. It's easy for me to look at Londoners milling about on the news and call them tossers, because I'm fortunate that if I go out to walk the Dog as a rule I'll see one other person and it's easy to distance. I used to live in central London and felt penned in sometimes even in normal times..it must be horrible and very hard.

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 06:38

Care home update: one more staff self isolating for 7 days. That leaves me with erm, 4 that can work over the next couple of days.
Another service user suspected of having it.
Two agency workers inducted on Saturday Night and booked for Sunday didn't show up last night-didn't even bother to tell me they weren't coming.
Staff that are working on their knees with exhaustion.
Mysterious governmental delivery of face masks we were promised yet to show up.
Couple of the other services run by same company now have cases, so staff off there too-Including another manager which makes what bank staff resource there was even more stretched (there wasn't really much anyway).
Oh and one of my staff, currently on annual leave anyway had a tantrum yesterday night at 10.30 on the phone as there was apparently an issue with her wages-they were £11 down. I don't have the time to deal with this just now and it's a pay roll issue that she needs to call them on Monday about. Came quite close to telling her to get to fuck to be honest.... FFS!!!

Not shaping up to be a great week again...

NoWordForFluffy · 23/03/2020 06:45

The government is now telling people to stay at their primary residence: www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-essential-travel-guidance

Should've done that before, but there you go.

Hopefully when we lock down they'll give x hours for people to get home (and tell them to do so).

woodencoffeetable · 23/03/2020 06:51

I can't get my head round the fact that we've been told for so long that it's 'just flu'

not one serious expert has called this 'just flu' from the beginning.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 23/03/2020 07:26

@BretonKitten. Thinking of you and you poor Mum, hopefully your dad stays comfortable.

Feeling better this morning Day 7 but not up yet.

I do believe we will be locked down tomorrow.

This is sobering and should be in EVERY t. Channel.

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 07:37

If they don't lock down we need a well spaced out march on number 10!

I joke obvs...
But they need to stop cocking about now and messing with the nudge theory and the implied lock downs to get us all used to it. Those that are sensible want it, those that aren't being sensible need telling and forcing to behave as they should be.
I'm all for defending civil liberties but if people are going to be as dumb as they are being then that all goes out the window in an emergency for me.

WhyNotMe40 · 23/03/2020 07:48

And lockdown and closing of non essential business will stop all the keyworker children in schools nonsense as there will be no excuse for one parent to send their child because they are working from home and need the peace while the other is a keyworker (looking very hard at DH here)

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 07:55

Steven Swinford @steven_swinford
There’s a feeling in the top levels of Government that a full lockdown is now ‘inevitable’ and should come sooner than later as @alexwickham picked up last night

Senior Govt source: ‘It is inevitable, you just have to look at other countries. The sooner you do it the better’

Senior Govt source on need for full London lockdown now rather than later

‘The difficulty the government is facing is that the spread of this virus is exponential

‘We won’t know if what we’re doing is the right thing until it is too late’

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, is also of the view that a lockdown of London is necessary because people aren’t following the advice

Here’s what he told Marr yesterday:

'I have been lobbying the government. There are instructions and rules we need to obey to stop people dying’

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 07:57

Norman Smith @bbcnormans
On testing - a new type of Coronavirus test is being developed which can be done on site in hospitals - @MattHancock

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 07:59

Paul Waugh @paulwaugh
^Another major announcement, hours after No10 press conference.
Sounds like the govt has basically nationalised the railways (or rather nationalised their losses) to ensure only essential travel.^

Agreed whynotme40... all those issues would be done with-less kids in school-less risk to them and teachers...

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 08:09

This guy works for yougov

Chris Curtis @chriscurtis94
Whilst I’m sure you are all loving your opportunity to bash Millennials based on what you saw on Clapham Common earlier, the data doesn’t really show them to be the problem.

The very old are acting differently to everyone else, but no generational gap apart from that.

I'm not going to try to defend men though.

Men are definitely the problem.

e.g. this question (from Tuesday) on the proportion of people who were “still going out as normal":

Women 65+: 30%
Women 50-64: 43%
Women 25-49: 35%
Women 18-24: 40%
Men 65+: 38%
Men 50-64: 51%
Men 25-49: 47%
Men 18-24: 52%

(I assume this has gone up across the board since then, but I would bet the pattern still remain similar.)

But either way, once you get below 65, age is the dividing line, not gender.

Same holds for proportion who would not self isolate if they had symptoms:

65+: 5%
50-64: 10%
25-49: 11%
18-24: 10%

Women: 6%
Men: 13%

Two theories as to why this might be.

Firstly, men have different attitudes to risk. On a 0-10 scale (where 10 is the riskiest), the proportion who would place themselves 7-10:

Men (under 65): 38%
Women (under 65): 24%

(Note: You can use more elaborate tests of risk, you will always get the same picture).

Secondly, men are harder to shame. Proportion who say they "care too much what others think":

Men: 48%
Women: 63%

I would also speculate there is less deference to authority among men, although don't have anything to back that up.

And I would also expect there to be a selfishness angle, but that is hard get get at in survey research.

Ben W Ansell @Benwansell
Chris, do you think this might be related to different educational patterns among younger men and women as well?

Chris Curtis @chriscurtis94
Was just thinking that.

I think it is likely that education might be canceling out an age effect that would otherwise exist.

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 08:11

DP's construction site is still open. He is staying away from home whilst the rest of us self isolate as otherwise he couldn't go into work.
He has subbies and materials coming from all over the UK still. Its ridiculous. It's not urgent to get that building finished. It wouldn't be unsafe to leave it for however long it's needed. All the site workers wages (or 80%) now being guaranteed by the government (though I get for some it would be hard to manage even on that). I can't see the logic of keeping it open at the minute.

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 08:14

When I go back to work after my 14 days next week (keyworker) he will have to come home to mind kids and Dogs anyway-as I think I will be practically, if not actually, moving in to my service for a bit... 8-4 at school wouldn't even be enough to cover the kids. It would be much better for lockdown to take out all uncertainty now.

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 08:15

BTW if the stuff about viral load is correct, you'd expect to see more men dying in the General population...

... And I suspect that you'd see a more equal pattern amongst medical workers who died

Purely theoretical but interesting

Rinoachicken · 23/03/2020 08:17

@MurrayTheMonk I PM’d you the mother day about staffing for your home, did you get it?
