Can I still take my child out to go on the scooter as long as I'm practising social distancing? Obviously no parks and would be on walks in the country, but you do get a lot of dog walkers. I don't have a garden, so I'm wondering what else to do besides going out for a drive with the windows open for some fresh air. My home is massively overlooked so I can't even see the countryside even though it's on my doorstep.

AvocadoOwl · 22/03/2020 22:34

It wouldn't surprise me if lockdown was tomorrow.

The govt tend to give a bit of a heads up before announcing more restrictive measures- presumably to prep people and make it easier to swallow. It then tends to come earlier than expected. 'We may need to tighten measures in a few days' reads to me as 'We have already decided to lockdown and this is enough warning for people to get their heads round the idea whilst being vague enough to stop people doing silly things in anticipation of a particular time/date'.

PonderTweek · 22/03/2020 22:43

@CharlieTangoBanana, I've heard that too about the viral load. A number of my husband's doctor friends are saying the same thing, and it seems to make sense if you look at the young frontline workers in Wuhan who have had severe cases. If it's true, it would make such a difference on preventing serious cases. Even though you might not be able to eliminate risk completely, you could still give yourself a better chance by social distancing, as your viral load would be small and therefore you should have milder symptoms. I hope this is true.

BretonKitten · 22/03/2020 22:44

Agree it’s coming soon @AvocadoOwl

I hope the announcement is tomorrow.

I dont want to get quarantined yet. I'm trying to find a cottage :(

BretonKitten · 22/03/2020 23:03

With the best will in the world, lmerc, you probably shouldn’t do that.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 23:11

Avocado I tend to agree with you on heads up, action motion.

And I tend to think a lockdown is imminent. I think the only reason it wasn't today was because the figures were better than anticipated. If we have a large jump tomorrow (very possible if collection of numbers today isn't full) then I think they will take action.

EveLevine · 22/03/2020 23:12

@Lifesavesocialdistance get onto the Ocado website ASAP! Might be too late, but the holding page has a message saying some areas have afternoon and evening slots available tomorrow.

Imerc · 22/03/2020 23:13

Why ? I'm not contageous

Imerc · 22/03/2020 23:16

You need to think about us trapped in the city. We can't live like this

BretonKitten · 22/03/2020 23:25

There are plenty of other threads detailing the dangers to rural communities of a sudden influx lmerc.

It’s what spread the virus out with initial epicenters in Italy and Spain.

And equally, it’s not a great idea for those travelling either. There are less hospital beds, fewer food shops etc in rural areas.

You may also be contagious and not be aware of it due to being asymptomatic. Incubation period can also be up to 24 days, even though usually it’s shorter. So you may be in an extended incubation phase and haven’t developed symptoms yet.

And extra travelling increases the chances of accidents, with emergency and medical services already under pressure.

It is tough, to have to stay inside. I haven’t been out more than a handful of times for the last couple of months. Then only medical appointments and supermarkets. But I think it’s better to face that with as much calm acceptance as you can.

And yes, I do know what it’s like to live in a studio flat in a city.

I understand lmerc. People on these threads who don't live in tiny places with no outside space have no understanding of what it will be/is like. We've done 9 days so far - no garden/tiny flat - 2 kids. I'm done with it. If I could find and afford a cottage somewhere out of the city I would.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 22/03/2020 23:33

Hi

Just caught up, not been so good this afternoon, a lemsip a little food and better now. Coughing under control.

Did anyone notice during Boris’s speech today he slipped up when talking about shutting things down and said 24 hours, then corrected himself?

It’s a known technique to insinuate prior to doing something, so it is more acceptable and maybe he knows we will shut down in 24 hrs, but isn’t saying that, so people adjust

Just a random theory.

Angryrant55 · 22/03/2020 23:33

I imagine only the mangers of the NHS will get prior warning - ditto top brass in the military and police. We will probably know its coming by ITV and Channel 4 getting told to air the announcement live.

BretonKitten · 22/03/2020 23:36

@NellyGrace

Unfortunately I do understand. I have a chronic illness and have often been housebound for extended periods of time, frequently for the last eight years.

During that time I have lived in a small city centre flat with no outside space, that was for three years. It is difficult, it is isolating, but it is doable if you have to do it. And this, sadly is one of the times that kind of thing is necessary.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 23:37

Yolo I'm semi rural.

This weekend the area has been heaving apparently. Lots of locals out walking but a fair few outsiders here too by all accounts.

We've not been out, in part because it's been so busy. It's an advantage being here as things are more spread out and we have a certain amount of local producers and shops who apparently have been swamped with new customers.

We've been customers of one for years and tbh it's made life a lot easier for us with all this going on. We have not had to worry about certain fresh stuff.

But there are some poorer bits to the area and that does make me nervous. We have one PCOS for the area ('fake' community policeman). We certainly are not going to get police or army here if things are locked down. And deliveries for the vulnerable are going to be lower on the priority list here. I could see an outbreak of crime that goes unchecked here. There is already I known thing where the much poorer neighbouring area almost 'raids' part of where we are. They go for cars or burglaries mainly.

We are a low priority when it comes to the bigger provision of services.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 23:39

People on these threads who don't live in tiny places with no outside space have no understanding of what it will be/is like.

We moved last year from somewhere like that as we'd outgrown it.

I do get it.

I also get that the alternative is worse.

NellyGrace · 22/03/2020 23:45

RTB - I can't get my head round the fact that we've been told for so long that it's 'just flu' - then the washing hands/herd immunity thing.

I've been shut inside for 10 days now and none of this feels real anymore. I'm going mad. Really I am. It's so hard to stay sane, not seeing the outside world.

It feels like we're being played in order to give up our freedom. It feels dystopian. I know I sound paranoid. But this is what being locked up does to you. And this is only after 10 days - whilst still being able to go out for a run/walk.

I will go mad if this continues. I don't care how weak I sound.

Imerc · 22/03/2020 23:51

I understand the need to contain cities, but the virus is everywhere now. All we can do is avoid people. You can't do that when you live crammed in like this. I know most people haven't but I've made sure not to catch it till now. This could go on for years

Imerc · 22/03/2020 23:52

I was about to say the same nelly

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/03/2020 23:55

Well, to be honest, I've been more fascinated and interested in what has been happening and the spread of CV across the globe and haven't really been worried about it, bar a slight concern and hope that my Mum doesn't get it.

But now I realise I'm in line for the letter telling me to shield and stay in for 12 weeks, it really worries me about what might happen to me if I catch it.

Imerc · 22/03/2020 23:58

Nelly rent is cheaper. I don't know why I even wanted to live in this godforsaken place

adiposegirl2 · 23/03/2020 00:05

So are we not going to talk about this?

Just to say thank you to everyone who wished FIL well the other night.

He has a morphine pump at home now, they’ve stopped virtually all other medication. He’s at best semi-conscious.

MIL is over 70 with a couple of underlying conditions, so she is self-isolating now. It’s incredibly hard for her. She’s really conscious that she has to stay well for FIL. She is also desperate that her children and grandchildren don’t lose them both.

She also knows how hard he fought for the last three years to stay alive for his children and especially his grandchildren (the youngest had just turned three when he was diagnosed). She doesn’t want to do anything that might the situation worse.
