So nothing except the gym and maybe the weatherspoons has closed.

Heaving full market, shops busy.

Police say they wont be checking or enforcing anything at all.

So what was the point?

OP posts:

I’ve just been in north Oxford (Summertown) and nearly every shop was shut. The independent pharmacy was making people queue outside. Boots was shut as was Costa. Marks and the co-op were open. People were clearly distancing.

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 14:00

What a horrible thing to say. Talk about kicking small business owners when they are down

Any business that puts profits ahead of people deserves kicking. Many here closed down on Tuesday, they’ll get my custom when they reopen.

whoami24 · 21/03/2020 14:01

Reading this thread I can't believe people are having bbq, parties, out and about as if everything is normal why so dumb?

Looks like lockdown is the only way people are going to change. I think they just think there invincible, probably only start caring when they start getting ill or people they know.

Worries me how many people will still visit their elderly mums tomorrow.

All week I only went out locally yesterday to get food but not planning on going out again in the near future, have a online shop booked for Thursday but worried I won't get most of it probably got enough food to last a couple off weeks. Been eating out off freezer/cupboards anyway due to DP starting a new job last month and not getting paid for a month.

DP still going to work, clothes warehouse but worried about him bringing the virus in the house. Makes me laugh the company put on their website they care more about their customers and staff then profit. But reality isn't the case no hands sanitiser etc.

mrslampshade · 21/03/2020 14:04

It's not just towns, same by me except I live rurally and it's almost like the entire neighbouring town has taken it upon itself to 'socially distance' themselves by all arriving at the same time with their dogs to go in the field by us. Never been so busy and poor horses in the field terrified. Also these people are not sticking to the public footpath whatsoever so wayyyy more footfall than ever outside our home including people annoyingly walking up to stand right outside and take pictures of our house etc even though we're about a mile from the public footpath. Cheers for thinking of us when trying to fill up your Instagram who are trying our hardest to stay away as have vulnerable people at home. Not to mention as we don't normally see a soul it's unnerving having people as pictures of our rural home knowing these people could be anybody and not just innocent idiots.

To quote Einstein:

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 21/03/2020 14:05

@Alsohuman I think you mean 'if' they reopen. Many small businesses won't come out the other side of this.

ifonly4 · 21/03/2020 14:06

haverhill I know your area well, and it's always buzzing with the private school students, as well as general public - it must seem deserted.

Just popped into town as DD needed something with any lockdown. I popped into where I work, they have a pharmacy so sure to stay open during this. It's very quiet in there, thought my job was secure but now wondering. There was about a third of the people in town, very easy to avoid others. That'll be the last time for shopping, other than work.

feelingverylazytoday · 21/03/2020 14:10

My town was probably about half as busy as usual, still plenty of people standing chatting in the aisles though. I was dreading it but it wasn't as bad as I expected. Still a fair amount of food in Sainsburys, bought enough for 4 days for my daughter and myself but going to try and stretch it to 5.

LottieBees19 · 21/03/2020 14:11

We need lockdown now or we will have deaths in every family.

BearSoFair · 21/03/2020 14:12

Ours is the same as always, judging from posts on Facebook. Just seen one saying that the manager in a local supermarket is telling people queuing to 'move down' ie get closer together and when questioned about social distancing snapped 'listen, move down and if you don't like it shop somewhere else' Shock

ilovecakeandwine · 21/03/2020 14:13

So even if you get 2 weeks of shopping in so your prepared for being ill . You may not get ill for weeks or at all so what do you do keep panic buying?

Shared from Sky News: Coronavirus: 'What's coming is extremely big' - UK consultant says outbreak could be worse than in Italy

0nwardsAndUpwards · 21/03/2020 14:14

@LottieBees19 I agree it needs to be enforced.

H1978 · 21/03/2020 14:16

Just been to town myself mainly to go to the bank and get groceries for sils family who are self isolating and it’s not as busy but plenty of milk fruit and veg and tinned toms in Lidl although not much bread

zonkin · 21/03/2020 14:16

I'm in North London zone 2 and normally it's very busy. I went out to collect our prescriptions from the pharmacy and it is extremely quiet. Eerily so.

I went for a walk around the park yesterday and most walkers and runners kept a safe distance. However, there were quite a few groups of people with children, including one group who were clearly from a nursery on an outing. And the playground was also quite busy.

Crystal87 · 21/03/2020 14:16

I'm told by a friend that near me there are two cafes still open with people eating inside.

musicposy · 21/03/2020 14:17

It's literally impossible at the minute for any of us who live in town to leave our homes AND follow government guidelines.

It’s no better in the country, OP. I started another thread on this today. I live on a housing estate by a cycle path and it’s never been so crazy. Constant traffic, constant people coming and going, crowds of people shouting outside my window, all out for a nice jaunt in the country. If you look down the cycle path it’s like any city centre. We are self isolating and under normal circumstances few enough people live here that he could pop the dogs out for 10 mins and not see a soul. But as it is we daren’t leave the front door due to the crowds.

I’m quite angry over it actually. I’m doing my bit and half the country aren’t bothering. Lockdown can’t come quick enough for me.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/03/2020 14:17

We need lockdown now or we will have deaths in every family.

I’ve got a feeling they’ll switch to lockdown or at least for most shops to shut next week. I don’t think there’s any other option now.

Notredamn · 21/03/2020 14:22

All the (non food) shops are closed in my town. It's quiet because there's no reason for anyone to be about.

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2020 14:23

Lockdown can't come quickly enough

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/03/2020 14:24

Lockdown is too late now. I live in a tiny rural place with a lot of weekend cottages. It's looking like people drove up through the night to get to their weekend bolt holes and be out of the cities...

Lovely. Thanks chaps.

PepePig · 21/03/2020 14:24

Don't get me started. I follow local police pages on social media and they're out every night breaking up groups of kids who are drinking, causing criminal damage etc. It's the same every weekend, but it'll be worse now...

I'm sorry, but my sympathy for 'parents' at this point has completely diminished. I'm embarrassed that so many parents are so bloody useless and nothing but a shit stain on society. Likewise, I'm absolutely fed up of seeing threads on here of parents who don't know how to keep their kids in... when did so many people get so lazy? Passive? Generally shit?

I think it's safe to say in 4 weeks time none of us will know what's hit us. We'll all be affected by everyone else's actions. We're truly fucked and need a lockdown now.

PeppermintNightmare · 21/03/2020 14:26

I work in a jewellers. You would be amazed at the amount of people that seem to think jewellery is an essential! The shop is as busy as ever.
I had a woman yesterday who wanted me to size her finger (this would mean I'd have to touch her hands). She was completely baffled when I told her I wasn't comfortable touching her.
From the attitudes I have seen first hand at work, I am very very worried!! I am praying that the government's next step is to close all non essential shops.

curious86 · 21/03/2020 14:28

It's the same in my town, unfortunately I'm a barber and we havent been told to close.
So many people think their invincible, its driving me mad how they moan about people being out and social distance but then come to get their haircut

Saoirse7 · 21/03/2020 14:30

How would they? Look at the messages people have been getting from the PM over the last week.

Look at the difference in Ireland, at the speech Varadkar gave on Tuesday. People are listening.

Spineless leadership is creating these problems. NHS staff are taking it into their own hands to tell people to sit in, explaining the gravity of the situation.

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2020 14:31

Close it all down. Our nhs cannot cope.
While your meant to serve this people you are at risk. It's just madness
