So nothing except the gym and maybe the weatherspoons has closed.

Heaving full market, shops busy.

Police say they wont be checking or enforcing anything at all.

So what was the point?

littlebitwooway · 21/03/2020 11:50

Why the fuck is Costa open? Hmm

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 21/03/2020 11:52

Im convinced that this will be the next major issue in this crisis

People are going to be unable to use their toilets and flush away their waste next, which will lead to further rushes on cleaning products and other diseases increasing

I had an email from United Utilities a couple of days ago asking people to only flush the three Ps. They are clearly worried.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 21/03/2020 11:52

Record sales in some pubs and restaurants last night. People are dickheads.

Lockdown should've already happened at least a week ago. Unfortunately it's too late. Damage done that the government could've prevented by taking responsibility for all those too stupid to take it for themselves.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 21/03/2020 11:53

And these dickheads will be the ones complaining loudest when they need care and no one to help

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/03/2020 11:54

What's the 3rd P? > missed point of thread Confused

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 21/03/2020 11:55

Our town is absolutely silent. Hardly anybody out.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 21/03/2020 11:55
  • I am inferring this from the absence of traffic noise, btw, I'm not going in to check!
SouthWestmom · 21/03/2020 11:57

I think there is some background planning especially as we have lots of diverse communities with different types of gatherings (prayers, shopping, food) and also a history of sporadic riot and protest march.

So first the vague social distancing and two week isolation, then suggestions to close theatres etc, then schools, then the order to close pubs and clubs etc.

This means some compliance, slowly across the week that increases, allows people to prepare their heads for it and leaves the police free to deal with the few who will flout the next step which I suspect will be severe lockdown from Monday.

There was a graph online of how many people adhere totally/ some /bit/a lot. There were regional variations i.e. London better but on average about 60-70% did it to totally and some. About 5% not at all.

The problem is how many they pass it on to. I only hope they took into account people following advice or not into calculations. I fear not and that is why this government/science hybrid intervention is not going to work.

There was a prof on Question Time talking about why we need to do more. He worked on Ebola and said it needs community intervention. All the support in the community so people follow the advice. At the time I thought he sounded like a frustrated bitter professional who wished he had been picked to make the interventions. Now though I am thinking he was right.

One thing I am confused about- why did we just not announce everything at once? Why do we need one fucking policy announcement a day? Just do all of it at once. It is like molly coddling the nation.

adaline · 21/03/2020 12:00

Why the fuck is Costa open?

Because as Boris said last night, if you offer a takeaway or delivery service you can still open - people just can't sit in.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/03/2020 12:01

Of course, Grin

littlebitwooway · 21/03/2020 12:01

Urgh. I go from feeling reassured by the government to despaired by the nation. I think we need police powers next to stop people going out. That is coming.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/03/2020 12:02

Costa also doesn't count as that shite they sell isn't coffee Grin

teraculum29 · 21/03/2020 12:04

I have no clue why English nation is like that., why the panic buying, why people not practising social distancing. I just can't get over it.

In Poland at the moment, towns are like ghost towns, people staying at home when possible, everything is closed for over a week now.
Loads of stuff in the shops, no panic buying.
Not saying that Poland is perfect, because it's not.

Spoke with friends and family there, all of them where saying that we might end up like Italy.

Not sure what need to happen, that will change people's behaviour.

thelittlefox · 21/03/2020 12:04

Why the fuck is Costa open?

Because the govt have left the loophole open that you don't have to close as long as you've hidden the chairs, and only serve in non-recyclable cups. Madness.

Amazed Wetherspoons have capitulated. Was expecting them to be touting pints in dingle-use plastic glasses.

Bringringbring12 · 21/03/2020 12:04

Oh don’t exaggerate
If you have any chains restaurants they will all be closed

Any chain coffee shops either closed or only take away

Loads of independents closed.

Why exaggerate 🙄

GerardWay123 · 21/03/2020 12:05

The Government are purposely doing it slowly. In a couple of days Boris will quite rightly say 'we gave you all a 2nd chance to self isolate and you didn't so it's now total lockdown'.

thelittlefox · 21/03/2020 12:05

single-use....(unintentional penis beaker invocation)

Bringringbring12 · 21/03/2020 12:07

Your cinema will be closed, your theatres will be closed etc etc

And yet you’re only seeing what you want to see so you can start a thread about how shit this country is

willloman · 21/03/2020 12:08

Our northern town is quieter, and a few things in the shops. But loads of people out on bikes/running which is fine, except the large group of clearly couples with young children...Yes, I think some people are missing the point. The government needs to broadcast those scary pictures from Italy more.

CrystalAlligator · 21/03/2020 12:09

Kitchen roll is a substitute. Bit gross but doable. Our plan when we run out of toilet roll is to cut the kitchen roll sheet into two or four, use it and then throw in the bin in a nappy bag. I’ll use a fresh flannel daily for wees and run through a hot wash. Just cos it can’t go down the toilet doesn’t mean you can’t wipe your arse with it! Can’t think of many better options?

YeahRiiiiight · 21/03/2020 12:09

I’m in a London suburb. My area is very quiet. We went for a walk in the local park this morning. A few others there, but almost everyone adhering to the social distancing (bar a few families letting their kids play together in the playground, which I thought was stupid).

Almost all shops closed on the high street. Only supermarkets and ethnic food shops open as far as I can see.

JigsawsAreCool · 21/03/2020 12:10

I live west of Glasgow. Local shop beside me - people are up and down to it but much less, busses passing with just 1 person on them.

Can see canal from window, people going along for walks/cycle but generally alone
