So nothing except the gym and maybe the weatherspoons has closed.

Heaving full market, shops busy.

Police say they wont be checking or enforcing anything at all.

So what was the point?

*old people still wandering around going into non essential shops. Ridiculous and slightly pissing me off that the elderly aren't listening.

Instead of this continuous banging on about older people why don’t you look at the papers this morning? Picture after picture of city centres full of young people in huge groups, brandishing their drinks and gurning at the camera looking like idiots. I’m sick of this continuous ‘oldie bashing’ when the young are equally to blame. But course, many on here want to blame the elderly for all of the country’s ills.*

I agree. Many people on here seem to hate the older generation and think they should all be locked up.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 21/03/2020 13:07

I agree. People are very stupid. shopping as a leisure activity. FGS.

DontCallMeShitley · 21/03/2020 13:07

And if there are non-essential shops open, why is that then? Presumably they are not owned by old people, but by equally irresponsible younger ones.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 21/03/2020 13:08

Um.... if they hated them, wouldnt they be encouraging them to socialise?
"locking them up" will actually save them

FlushedZebra · 21/03/2020 13:09

Crazy. People just aren't listening/thinking it doesn't apply to them.

I think the mixed messages coming from Boris are somewhat to blame though.

shutupsteph · 21/03/2020 13:09

It's ridiculous. So many people on my social media are claiming that the government are fear mongering and there's no real risk. Moaning about pubs and gym being closed, saying it won't stop them going out etc and 'keep calm and carry on' - it's so sad to think that people are so selfish and stupid to believe that the measures in place don't apply to them and the threat isn't real. It's going to take a police (and maybe military) enforced lock down all because people can't follow simple rules to stop the spread of a virus that is literally killing peoples friends and family. What a disgrace

Luc1nda · 21/03/2020 13:10

I reckon non-essential shops and similar will have to close on Monday. Reckon they’re letting businesses get a weekend’s trade in, and letting people get used to each restriction one at a time.

Melfish · 21/03/2020 13:10

Drove through Richmond Park this morning (about 11) and it was absolutely heaving. Car parks full, tons of walkers and cyclists. People hanging around in large groups. In contrast local town centres looked pretty quiet.

IrisAtwood · 21/03/2020 13:13

I think that it is also due to a lack of imagination and not watching the news.

Unless you pay attention to the news and read and watch what is happening in other countries everything seems normal.

There’s also the belief that it won’t happen to them or their loved ones.

Mordred · 21/03/2020 13:14

Humans, as a species, are arseholes.

That's all there is too it, really.

vikkimoog · 21/03/2020 13:14

Unfortunately, dh has insisted that we continued to buy on a daily basis (so decide what''s for supper, go and buy it) so we don't have vast stocks of stuff
are you not allowed to make your own decisions and do the sensible thing of having food for more than one day at a time?

Mordred · 21/03/2020 13:15

to it*

LonginesPrime · 21/03/2020 13:15

BackyardChickens, I have no idea.

But shops can't close until it does happen as they need to protect themselves financially.

I know there are additional grants/loans, but I think a lot of small businesses are worried about having to build up their customer/client base from scratch again if they close, especially if people become accustomed to a different way of life.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/03/2020 13:16

Most people will gradually start to comply as for many it’s not had an impact on their life its more of an inconvenience

There will be lock downs soon and apart from the odd few vast majority people we will comply as then it impacts their lives

I think some love the drama of thinking people won’t comply and there will be riots in the streets Hmm

Quiet here in se London

I have my son and his wife in Jordan. They have nowhere near as many ill or infected as we do here in the UK yet they are in lock down. It has become even more strict recently. As well as not being able to leave their house the supermarkets are now closed for 3 days. They are forced to stay in their house or face fines.
We are fucked in this country.

Mordred · 21/03/2020 13:18

Someone posted this as a meme on FB:

"Just imagine: if NOBODY had told you about the coronavirus, would you have noticed any difference at all in this flu season???"

Well, let's ask the Italians, shall we? Bloody hell.

Ilikewinter · 21/03/2020 13:20

I think we will be on lockdown by next weekend. Until shops have to close they wont, and if shops are open then that invites people to carry on as normal. There will be a massive spike in infections this week and that will force Boris's hand. Hes having a conference call today with supermarket executives, i reckon its on how they will nationally manage a lockdown and ensuring all supermarkets comply with the new laws.

calllaaalllaaammma · 21/03/2020 13:20

It’s Mother’s Day tomorrow and usually our shop’s busiest day of the year bar x-mas week but it’s down by 3/4.
We are in a West London superb and it’s still busy with people just not the usual crowds.
Still people getting their nails done unbelievably.

neveradullmoment99 · 21/03/2020 13:21

Does anyone know if Boris is coming on at 5pm today or is that just weekdays?

Glaceon · 21/03/2020 13:21

@Megan2018 Are your suppliers rationing animal feed? Ours are doing what they can for regulars. My mum breeds skinny pigs and the manager where she buys is putting her a sack or two aside. Another woman who buys 8 bags a week every week for the last few years is struggling and they are doing what they can to help keep her some aside even though they cant do her usual due to others stocking up.

@LonginesPrime that's my situation unfortunately! Work for an independent, non-essential business - until we're told to close, we will be open and dealing with members of the public who choose to still be out and about. I don't like it but need to get paid! I'm hoping for a forced lockdown soon to stop the ambiguity, and know we'll still get a wage 😕

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 21/03/2020 13:22

Tourist town I live in is still full of selfish wankers, wandering around like nothing’s happening.

covetingthepreciousthings · 21/03/2020 13:22

Does anyone know if Boris is coming on at 5pm today or is that just weekdays?

Today's briefing is at 2pm but not sure Boris is there today, it's the Environment, Food and Rural affairs secretary I think.

Benjispruce · 21/03/2020 13:26

I’m cleaning and waiting for my DD to return from uni. Will be making a lasagne later and walk the dog, that’s it.
