So nothing except the gym and maybe the weatherspoons has closed.

Heaving full market, shops busy.

Police say they wont be checking or enforcing anything at all.

So what was the point?

OP posts:

Slightly ironic how half of those complaining on this thread know about this having "just popped out" or having gone out for a walk. Just stay at home and make do with what you have for goodness sake. Popping to the shop every day/few days is going to make things worse.

IrisAtwood · 21/03/2020 20:14

We have been told to take exercise and fresh air regularly, as long as we can stay distant from people there is no problem.

Why should vulnerable people be locked in their homes because some people are incapable of following advice or thinking of others?

Reginabambina · 21/03/2020 20:16

Older people have a social obligation to stay in because they are the ones that will topple the healthcare system.

It was very busy in town this morning (I live in town so can see/hear from my house before I get humped on). By this evening almost every non-essential shop had closed indefinitely and there was no one around. The silence is absolute right now (usually you can hear a lot of cars and people at this time).

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/03/2020 20:17

Sit in the garden and get fresh air that way. Or open the windows if you don't have a garden. Do an online exercise class on you tube. No need whatsoever.

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 20:23

You can’t walk a dog in a tiny garden. People need to get out for exercise or there will be a mental health pandemic hot on the heels of this one.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/03/2020 20:23

Dogs don't have to be walked. You can do plenty with a dog in a small garden. I have a (large) dog too.

Notredamn · 21/03/2020 20:24

There's massive house party across the road, you'd think it was New Year's Eve!

CandyLeBonBon · 21/03/2020 20:24

Slightly- social distancing is not the same as isolation you know that right? I was about 100 meters from any other human being at any time. Deliberately kept away from anyone. Which is the advice given for dog walking. What I observed was A LOT of people milling about in close proximity to each other and NOT observing the suggested rules for social distancing. And as for shopping - I'm a single parent to 3 kids. I still have to feed them but I go out once a day to walk my dog and pick up provisions that I need in small quantities so as not to add to the problem of stripping the shelves bare. That is approximately an hour of my day. The rest of the time we are at home. I can't really see how else I can cut that down. There are no online shopping slots for weeks and no dog walkers available.

But I'm open to suggestions.

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 20:25

Dogs don't have to be walked

Ours does. You carry on and neglect yours, ours will be properly cared for. We rarely see anyone where we walk her anyway.

adaline · 21/03/2020 20:28

The government are actively encouraging people to go out and get fresh air and exercise - going on walks is absolutely fine.

CandyLeBonBon · 21/03/2020 20:32

I have a collie. She gets very anxious and hyperactive if she isn't exercised. I think there's a big difference between socialising I large groups in close proximity and walking alone in an isolated spot well away from anyone else

@Glaceon Update on previous posts

Well DH reported that it was quiet for a Saturday but people are still standing on top of each other etc. He actually had to ask Tesco staff to get out of his personal space so this doesn’t bode well. They looked at him like he had 2 heads.

Animal feed not in short supply so have 2 months worth- they are fully stocked and don’t anticipate issues and not limiting purchases. Tesco also had everything we needed - washing powder for nappies and capsules for clothes, fabric softener, soap, shower gel, shampoo, dishwasher tablets, bread, milk, fruit etc.

We should not need to go back there for 1-2 months hopefully as should be able to get anything else from Ocado, Amazon Prime and farm shops.

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2020 20:48

How long till we are like Italy?
About two weeks...
I'm so sad that people dont realise this is a health emergency. It will drag on and on at this rate as well. Longer than Boris is prepared to tell people.

JaceLancs · 21/03/2020 21:01

We took a picnic to beach today and had a walk along sea front
Lots of people out walking or cycling
I was shocked that some cafes were blatantly ignoring the takeaway only
Fish and chip stand had a massive queue and lucky if people were 2 feet away from each other never mind 2 metres

Flaxmeadow · 21/03/2020 21:06

Just been to huge Sainsbury’s As desperately needed some bits.

Very few people
Loads of stock
Everyone muted and keeping their distance

Sometimes I read mumsnet and it like I live on another planet

Wish this had been my experience of Sainsbury today (urban area in the north of England)

Loads of people
Stock not bad but not good
No one keeping their distance at all. Apart from one fellow wearing a mask. Infact when I tried to attempt any distancing, people stared at me as if i was nuts

Got chatting with one of the staff, who are lovely BTW, and he told me that they had attempted distancing in queues at the checkout, by placing cardboard signs and markers but within 10 minutes people had just trampled all over them and ground them into the floor.

Another planet you say?

cushioncovers · 21/03/2020 21:17

Our Local out door market still open today. Don't know how busy it was but comments on fb suggesting it's ok because it's outdoors.

cologne4711 · 21/03/2020 21:20

Older people have a social obligation to stay in because they are the ones that will topple the healthcare system

What I've seen nobody mention on here and didn't think of myself until my mother mentioned is, is the obvious fact that lots of elderly people have mild dementia. My mum has a friend who lives alone, she's very fit, but has mild dementia. So for example, anything my mum says to her about covid goes in one ear and out the other. She keeps ringing my mum to complain about the shops not restocking the shelves. My mum explains and she forgets again. This particularly lady has no family and there will be others like her.

So when you see elderly people out shopping, they are not necessarily just being awkward.

cushioncovers · 21/03/2020 21:21

Our big Tescos has had a run on alcohol last night and today. The shelves are stripped bare. Still no toilet roll. 🤷🏻‍♀️

cologne4711 · 21/03/2020 21:22

People need to get out for exercise or there will be a mental health pandemic hot on the heels of this one

And even more of an obesity crisis, adding to the numbers with underlying conditions.

cologne4711 · 21/03/2020 21:23

Still no toilet roll

I've not seen loo roll in any of our local supermarkets for at least two weeks now.

lilgreen · 21/03/2020 21:40

You can exercise outside without shopping. You can even exercise inside. Obesity is not an excuse to not practise social distancing.

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/03/2020 04:27

Got this on my Facebook this evening. It won’t stop the selfish fuckers though. Quite frankly, if they would take notice of something like this they wouldn’t have been selfish enough to travel in the first place.

My town is NO different today
Falangalangadingdang · 22/03/2020 07:38

@JaceLancs

We took a picnic to beach today and had a walk along sea front

It's people like you that are part of the problem. Stay at home DO NOT go out in

on a fucking day trip.

IrisAtwood · 22/03/2020 07:46

@Reginabambina Younger people have a social obligation to stay in because they are the ones who are spreading it.

Reginabambina · 22/03/2020 09:58

@IrisAtwood sure, but that doesn’t mean that the older generation are free to do whatever they want because they are the most likely to die from it. I’ve heard w lot of people saying they’ve lived long enough, quality over quantity etc. They quickly shut up when I point out that their quality over quantity could mean that my child could die is he has an accidental but exposure or my friend could die if she needs an emergency Caesarian etc.

I agree that everyone should be staying in just now unless they must go out but it’s the old and infirm who go out and recklessly catch it that will be doing the most harm.

@cologne4711 very true which is why no one should tell off older people unless they’ve specifically said they’re flouting the advice for selfish reasons.
