Murray and riot yes, there are reports of CV infected people feeling ok one day, then crap again the next. Happens with our 'normal' flu and heavy colds too, when you think about it.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 21/03/2020 08:13

@MarshaBradyo You asked about where the extra beds are coming from. In my hospital we are making extra beds for critical care on the existing unit, and then expanding into our day surgery/ recovery /theatres area. We are creating more medical beds by stopping all non essential surgery (we would normally have 4 wards full of people who have had planned procedures). In many areas we have additional space to use to put in physical beds. We have a winter escalation ward which has just been closed which we plan to reopen when needed.
We also have some empty buildings on site which the estates team are busy kitting out as clinic/ward space. This should more than double our capacity for medical and ITU beds. I'm aware there are conversations locally about buying space in the local private hospitals . Some hospital trusts have community hospitals which would be well utilised for non covid patients or step down care. Staffing all this extra space will be an issue, however.

Symptoms seem to vary, Sunshine but all afflicted (I think) report the cough and high temp initially as an indicator they are infected with CV.

Mazarinegreen · 21/03/2020 08:15

Does anyone know what the latest research is on whether we can catch this more than once? My understanding was that you could but I'm really hoping that's not the case...

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 08:17

Tobermory thank you so much that was helpful to read. I very much hope more staff are found too.

DrMaryMalone · 21/03/2020 08:20

@picklemewalnuts my OH does a bit of gardening on the side of his day job and has been inundated with calls this week to price up gardening jobs. I think people are looking ahead to possibly being in lockdown and want a nice outdoor space to use should they be unable to leave home.

woodencoffeetable · 21/03/2020 08:23

@Mazarinegreen the jury is still out on that.
probably yes, but there have been cases of people getting it again.
however with sone illnesses there are people who never build immunity. I know a couple of people who get chicken pox again and again.

Skittlesss · 21/03/2020 08:23

Seen some stupid people on Facebook - “covid 19 shuts down the pubs, so we will have a house party instead” Hmm

woodencoffeetable · 21/03/2020 08:25

my pneumonia doesn't seem to be responding to the cocktail of antibiotics so they have been extended into a third week.

sorry to hear that you are unwell, but if your pneumonia is cv or another viral disease then ab will do nothing for it.
which is one of the reasons why covid-19 is so awful- there just is not a lot that can be done to treat it atm.

justchecking1 · 21/03/2020 08:28

For those with chronic pain and taking naproxen, etc, my understanding is it's fine to keep taking it unless you're ill.

It has so very short half life, the anti-inflammatory effect wears off very quickly, so it shouldn't cause issues until you actually need the inflammatory response when you're unwell.

I wouldn't stop the meds just yet

Why aren’t people taking this seriously?

I belong to a Facebook group of about 50 women because we all had our babies at the same time many years ago. They are now talking about how we should all meet up in a few weeks and arrange visits and sleepovers at each other’s houses and hopefully go to local farms and petting zoos to keep the children entertained.

I’m just flabbergasted.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2020 08:30

People are bloody stockpiling seeds and compost now. Wilko is sold out!

Stockpiling? Or realising that gardening is one of the few things they can do easily for the next few months in isolation.

We moved last year and our garden has no plants in it. I started trying sort it out in January with a view to doing it over the next months. Then it became apparent that it coronavirus might become an issue here, I bought what I was going to need earlier than I perhaps would.

My parents are isolating for the duration due to my dad's heart condition. They are retired and my mum has been very big on gardening for a long time.

I'm not entirely surprised that people will have bought lots of gardening stuff. It's for their sanity. People genuinely are going to need things for their own mental health.

I don't know that people can be criticised for buying gardening stuff for the long summer ahead of them. It's only a problem if they are doing so to fleece others in a few weeks time.

I am new to mums net but want to bring parents attention to the dilemma of private schools who are remaining fully open to all pupils, not just Key Worker families and in my opinion, are endangering other families. I think this breeches their Duty of Care. I have started a petition requesting that private schools be made to close too (apart from for key worker families). The petition will go live later this week. If you agree, please take a moment to sign it. It will be listed on the Gov.uk website. Thank you

keep taking your essential medicines

TwentyViginti · 21/03/2020 08:32

Interesting about chicken pox. I had one full bout as a young child, then another, much milder bout a few years later.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2020 08:38

I belong to a Facebook group of about 50 women because we all had our babies at the same time many years ago. They are now talking about how we should all meet up in a few weeks and arrange visits and sleepovers at each other’s houses and hopefully go to local farms and petting zoos to keep the children entertained.

Someone in my sons class parent class suggesting hiring the local hall as all the classes there weren't running anymore so we could run some stuff ourselves.

Then another one suggested a big meet up to play games on a nearby park.

I'm glad I wasn't awake but one of the other mums politely explained social distancing.

It's amazing seeing which parents are informed and which aren't.

Dh has just seen on his Facebook people complaining not to judge others for doing certain things (which aren't social distancing) another complaining that what's the difference between playing football today when the kids were all in school together yesterday anyway, and another saying they had just been to the barbers.

He popped to the shop yesterday evening and saw the local pub was heaving and there were great gangs of teenagers out.

People really are not covering themselves in glory with their general awareness and sense of community responsibility.

It won't be until the death count starts to stack up later this week that the penny will start to drop.

Casino218 · 21/03/2020 08:50

@SunshineCake I'm going back to social distancing at day 16 So I will be well and truly out of infectious period then.

ScatteredMama82 · 21/03/2020 08:52

My DH works at a military base mon-fri. The kids and I are now staying home, not going out at all except maybe for a walk (we’re rural, thankfully!) I’m really worried DH will bring the virus home to us at the weekend, but he can’t stay away for months 😢

DadDadDad · 21/03/2020 09:05

@Redlab1 - that surprises me. All the independent schools I am aware of are following the government line, and from their communications I assumed they don't have a choice, shutting for all but the eligible children in the same as state schools. It might be more effective to name and shame the schools.

ajandjjmum · 21/03/2020 09:06

I don't think you're right Redlab - ALL schools are closed.

DadDadDad · 21/03/2020 09:06

*same way

Eeyoresstickhouse · 21/03/2020 09:09

Is anyone else actually writing a physical list of the companies who have no social responsibility and the ones who are going above and beyond? I have been the past few days and so far it is the big businesses who are going to be losing money from me long term. The smaller ones who can't afford it like the big ones are really going all out! The big ones are just putting money over safety (wetherspoons, Britannia hotels et al).

Redlab1 · 21/03/2020 09:12

Some private schools are still open - my child’s is and are planning to remain open. That is why I have started a petition - they should be made to close for all but key workers children.

Youngatheart00 · 21/03/2020 09:13

Someone at work is self isolating for 12 weeks due to being in a higher risk group. That’s all well and good but her DH is still going to work and socialising with others, AIBU to suggest that defeats the point of the Self Isolation? I don’t want to seem bitter but my colleague is on full pay whilst I am having to take on all of her duties and work at least 4 hours unpaid overtime a day, all when she’s doing a pointless isolation.
