It is math. You have 1440 minutes in 24h and there are 627 deaths.

DrawMeARainbow · 20/03/2020 18:10

If Italy locked down last week, is it still another week before the lockdown effect starts to help bring infections down?

Dear God.

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/03/2020 18:14

Yes. Last I heard was April 3rd more or less should be peak contagion. Deaths will of course continue to rise after that.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/03/2020 18:14

So I've updated the Italy vs UK deaths from coronavirus table - we're now lagging behind Italy if I have the correct figure (177 deaths). I hope that is good news of a sort.

By the end of next week there should be a slowing down of contagion rises. The curve will start hopefully to flatten out slightly.

AutumnRose1 · 20/03/2020 18:16

Canterbury do you mean peak for UK or Italy please?

Thank you.

2010Aussie · 20/03/2020 18:16

Jena - yes step away from MN and stop worrying about numbers. You can't do anything about it.

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/03/2020 18:18

Oh it's your table Crunchy! Thank you!

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 18:18

Sathnam Sanghera - 'People pouring into pubs in North London.'

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/03/2020 18:18

Sorry Autumn, I'm in Italy.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 18:18

Bill Neely - 'BREAKING : 381 more dead in 24 hours in Italy’s Lombardy Province alone. Total number of positives for the #Coronavirus across #Italy: 47,021 (5,986 more than yesterday). Total death toll now a staggering 4,032 (627 more than y’day) & 5129 recovered (689 more than y’day). Horror.'

AutumnRose1 · 20/03/2020 18:20

Canterbury thank you.

BNO Newsroom - 'BREAKING: Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker plans to issue a shelter-in-place order for the entire state, sources say - Chicago Tribune.'

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 20/03/2020 18:20

I am sooooo cross with Boris for saying he'll see his mum.

Thousands if not millions will follow that lead.

With horrible consequences.

He should have said

show your mum you love her by NOT seeing her in person on Mother's Day.

Massive missed opportunity. And should have been predicted as a question by his team.

I've finally got my head round feeling guilty for missing my mums birthday, Mother's Day, Easter. Now he has totally shat on my best intention.

He is a world class selfish, arrogant, ineffectual prick.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 18:22

Steven Swinford - 'Boris Johnson has tonight told ALL bars, restaurants, clubs, cinemas gyms and leisure centres to close
Not clear yet how that will be enforced
Is it a request or a compulsion under law which can be enforced by criminal sanctions?'

2010Aussie · 20/03/2020 18:23

Pickle - I don't think a lot of elderly people are necessarily worried about dying per se - they just don't want a prolonged and painful end. My 87 year old mother gives me the "I died in the War speech" on a daily basis. She's not worried.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/03/2020 18:24

Oh it's your table Crunchy! Thank you!

Welcome! Wasn't my table to begin with, don't know who started it, but I've been adding to it as I saw it was dormant and I think death rate is the only way we can compare now, considering testing numbers are very different between countries.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 20/03/2020 18:24

Oh lord.

I almost wish I did believe in God at times like this.

But I've also never been more grateful for science and scientists.

As well of course as our NHS.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 20/03/2020 18:26

2010aussie unfortunately that's the death most of us face with or without covid.
Until we bring in legislation that allows people to go how they want!

NewYearNewTwatName · 20/03/2020 18:35

Really disappointed about Universal Credit and self employed. for those who have just lost their jobs and still have rent and Bill's to pay its poultry.

The self employed are still going to be fucked too.

I'd also like to know if a vulnerable person decides to self isolate from their job is it mandatory there employer applies for the 80% wage grant for them?

I have a friend who is in the very high risk group but she cannot self isolate because her employer will not pay her even SSP if she chooses to self isolate. she also couldn't survive on the 2 weeks of £94 SSP because she has rent bills, food to pay for her and her DC. So currently she is sat in an office with other people also coming in when I'll because they also cannot afford to self isolate because of the company policies of not paying. I worry so much for her.

She needs to know if she self isolates because she's at risk that her company has to pay her 80%. They know about her health issues they know she is high risk!

Cherrypi · 20/03/2020 18:37

They need to shut the libraries to make the older people take it seriously.

Michelleoftheresistance · 20/03/2020 18:38

She's not worried.

Mine either.

I keep pointing out that isolating isn't just for her, it's protecting key workers who can't isolate by keeping public areas quiet, it's protecting the nhs from overwhelm when she's far more likely to get it and badly, and it's protecting nhs personnel from having to make a truly horrible and distressing decision about not treating her. That bit tends to sink in.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 18:40

I suspect a lot of councils will shut libaries on their backs but the wifi function is important - with more people unemployed people will need that function is they don't have other access to it.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 20/03/2020 18:42

Italy! So sad.

DH almost cried with relief at the 80%, he’s crunching figures, but without having to pay the VAT, it means he can keep everyone on.

I’m self employed, so I can get something too. Feeling a bit better, just a headache and the coughing.

Nononoandno · 20/03/2020 18:45

@Calmonthesurfacebut
I’m so pleased for you both 👍
