@PleaseStopCrying completely agree! My DD Nursery needs to know ASAP what children will require childcare. Whilst I'm fairly certain DH will be consider a key worker - I'm unsure of myself.

ofwarren · 19/03/2020 08:07

@HasaDigaEebowai
Is it going to be families who have both parents as key workers like you just said?
My sister in law is NHS staff but my brother is part time retail. I'm guessing he would be expected to look after the kids rather than a school?

Lynamic · 19/03/2020 08:09

That's interesting Division Belles thanks for sharing that.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 08:09

Anyone heard a rough idea of when? I have colleagues who desperately want to know rough numbers and fanily and friends who really need to know asap if their jobs are on the list or if they need to make alternative arrangements.

When they've finished writing it on the back of a fag pack themselves.

In the same boat really and need to know plans for Easter holidays and/or whether NHS staff leave likely to be binned.

Sil and bil don't just need school cover. They need after school cover too. And to make sure they have childcare during holidays if they have leave cancelled.

I'm on standby but obviously that could be a problem if travel is prohibited and I'd rather take them now than in a couple of weeks when things are more crazy.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 08:11

Sil said last night she still wasn't sure how they would be covered. Their alternative emergency childcare is grandparents.

I suspect dietary requirements will have to be put on hold for a while for many

For some of us that simply isn't possible. Gluten and coeliacs, for example. For me, although I"m not coeliac I avoid gluten as I'm gluten intolerant, it gives me unpleasant symptoms. I've stocked up with various GF flours and ingredients so I can make my own GF bakes. I am also histamine intolerant and have oxalate issues. Eating foods that are high in either give me unpleasant symptoms (and I certainly don't want to get coronavirus with either of those symptoms in play). It is difficult but not impossible. But I can't just pretend I'm fine and eat those things, I'll be ill pretty quickly.

Petiolaris · 19/03/2020 08:18

Not if you have allergies. I’m shit scared that supermarkets won’t prioritise “free from” essentials and I’ll starve. Small corner shops don’t stock any special dietary items. And the packet sizes are tiny so if we’re restricted to only a couple of items do I get special food I can eat but that isn’t big enough for us all to share, or a bigger packet that I’m allergic to but everyone else can eat?

Dramadrama · 19/03/2020 08:19

If I manage to move to rural before quarantine I would worry about serial killers

What?

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 08:20

Italy extends lockdown to whole country

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 08:20

Well there are slot of serial killers in my village so it's a real concern Grin

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/03/2020 08:22

Is it going to be families who have both parents as key workers like you just said?

I don't have this on authority it is just what that particular school has assumed (I think they looked at how it is working in France) and how they have planned. If one parent isn't a key worker they will be expected to provide childcare like everyone else.

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/03/2020 08:24

I'm not minimising dietary requirements its just that they are unlikely to be provided for in the same way. The harsh reality is that some people may need to accept that they have to eat differently simply because there is no other choice.

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 08:26

Care workers will surely also be on that list.

Care home update: second service user sick with symptoms. Three more staff called in as symptomatic/sick.
Of my 18, thats 8 off, three camping at service until Tuesday (after which company has told them they get two paid weeks off so that's them out). That leaves me with 7. We need 8 per day and two at night.
I don't have enough people even if none of them go off sick/ have to contend with child care.

Dramadrama · 19/03/2020 08:28

My son has coeliac and getting gf bread or flour is difficult now. I suspect those with gluten ‘issues’ that don’t actually aren’t helping here.

Youngatheart00 · 19/03/2020 08:32

Are Hubei province still in lockdown currently? Showing that it works but it needs to be for an extended period?

BatSegundo · 19/03/2020 08:33

Murray that sounds so difficult. Are adult social care aware of the precarious position you're in at your home? No idea if they will be able to help, but it sounds like things might get unsafe for workers and residents very quickly. You can't carry this responsibility on your own, it's just not fair Flowers

Petiolaris · 19/03/2020 08:33

some people may need to accept that they have to eat differently simply because there is no other choice
Except many people can’t. They’d have to starve because they literally can’t eat something they’re allergic to. Personally my life would be at more risk from eating wheat than from eating nothing.

Lynamic · 19/03/2020 08:36

I dont know, I look at the map at these deserted looking locations with one road it's quite scary. There's always a virus cluster not too far away as well

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 08:38

Yes they are. They have been no help at all. They don't have a plan and they don't have any answers (in fairness what can they do-no magic source of care workers ready to go).
Usually if one homes staffing is hit by illness, ie a noro outbreak, they would close it and move the residents to respite. But all homes are in the same boat staffing wise and are trying to lock down. There is no where for anyone to go.

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 08:43

Things are already unsafe. We are working with skeleton staffing well below safe levels and those there are exhausted. Mistakes will be made. Inevitable.

I'm at home with sick dd, sick Mum with dementia (both temp and cough), and healthy stroppy teen dd1.
Feel pretty rough this morning myself and trying to sort work out over the phone/via email.

I'm usually good in a crisis but I'll admit to a little cry this morning.

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 08:50

They're developing the test to see if you've had it.

Surely once we test yes, we go out? If we test no, we wait for a vaccine? I'm sure people have tested positive, negative then positive.

Alib838 · 19/03/2020 08:54

I was speaking to my brother in law who lives in Cornwall on Tuesday. If you're going to Cornwall take the provisions you will need foodwise before you go so as not to strain the already straining supermarkets. There is a very large elderly proportion (40% ish possibly higher) all trying to get supplies in before quarrantine plus one hospital for the whole of Cornwall creakingly under pressure. Be advised. Be safe.

Self-isolation: Battle is in the mind, not with the virus

Sunshinesky1981 · 19/03/2020 09:04

Dreading going onto work in a bit. Will be finding out if they will be letting me go on Friday or if I will be able to take unpaid leave on the hope the business survives. Not helping that it is still clear as mud as to if I will be able to claim any help from benefits. As a single parent I cant look for other work as I now have 0 childcare as the after school club will also close along with the school. Sad
