@itsallwrongisntit I just wanted to say that I am thinking of you and offering a virtual handhold 💐

Comenext · 19/03/2020 07:35

@Wynona
Then what? How is herd immunity achieved if nobody is going out? Is there a link that explains how this plan works?
Good point. This is puzzling me too. We can't all stay at home until the scientists create a vaccine.
When and if the lockdown rules are eased off, then the numbers of cases will rise again. How can this be managed?

MollyButton · 19/03/2020 07:35

Oh and my worry? My middle DD is being flown back from a far away country, but it won't be for a few days. Will I be allowed to go to the airport to collect her? (And I don't know which airport yet.)

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 07:35

Wynona This phase now is to deal with the large numbers who are infected and who are already or will go on to be critically ill. The distancing should suppress the spread to ease pressure on our services. It should also help to prevent further vulnerable people who could become critically to need ICU treatment.

IrisAtwood · 19/03/2020 07:35

I feel anxious and just want everything back to normal 🥺

“Don’t travel unless you really have to”
- The 40 stations closing today as London begins to shut down for real
- A third of the 104 deaths are in London which is ‘couple weeks’ ahead of rest of country
- One hospital in London told @SkyNews it is reaching ICU capacity

Herd immunity plan was binned when they realised how many would die trying to achieve it.

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/03/2020 07:38

Your daughter will be in quarantine surely?
All of ours being flown back are. @MollyButton

CrunchyCarrot · 19/03/2020 07:39

Morning everyone. It's all very surreal. I look out the window at the grey sky and light rain and everything looks very normal, but it isn't. It's less of a shock to wake up now and remember, though.

I wish we would go into lockdown as many seem to be avoiding complying with social distancing, and I hope they get strict with supermarket rationing, and helping the frail. This is such new territory it's a minefield, trying to get it right.

A second wave of the virus could be starting up in Asia as people return from elsewhere and bring it in, especially in South Korea.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 07:40

Well I think we can safely conclude that the OP of the first thread was not being unreasonable

Hollow laughing

Yes. I think worrying was justified!

Quartz2208 · 19/03/2020 07:41

I think the plan is now to have a period of lockdown (3/4 months) to flatten and suppress the curve. During this time drug trials for vaccines and treatment will be done with some kind of treatments being ready in the Summer. Things will gradually open I think then but countries will remain closed to all but essential. The next 12 months will depend on further waves but potentially smaller lockdowns in (presumably as soon as clusters appear). With the hope a vaccine can start being rolled out in summer of next year

At least I think that is the plan!

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/03/2020 07:41

Regarding the selfishness of fleeing to the 'burbs and the birds...it was announced yesterday by our regional president that a "very significant" number of people in ICU are now turning out to be older relatives of the younger students etc who were part of the mass exodus from Lombardia on 7th March.
Which fits in with incubation, models and contagion trajectories.
And selfish fuckmuppet logic in general.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 07:44

Key workers list coming today, Gavin Williamson says.
Will include:
- ALL NHS staff (from doctors and nurses to cleaners/admin)
- ALL staff in schools
- Police
- Delivery drivers
- Those working for 'critical infrastructure'
- Sounds like people working in transport too

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/03/2020 07:44

It's times like this I wish MN had no namechange facility. The nasty part of me wants to know how many of the posters ridiculing these threads a month ago are now running round doing the Chicken Licken thing.
Mind you, not as much as the proudly dim who are STILL not getting it. To be in the UK (or anywhere) really and continue to post "why the hysteria" threads takes some level of thick.

Wynona · 19/03/2020 07:49

Thanks for those that have responded to me. I would like to think that there is some exit plan. Would have to wait for vaccine before we can go back to normal? If so, that is many months away. At some point do you think that we have to accept more infections?

Healthy people that would volunteer to get infected, stay in lockdown (so they don't infect the vulnerable), but the able to go back to work.

PleaseStopCrying · 19/03/2020 07:52

Key workers list coming today, Gavin Williamson

Anyone heard a rough idea of when? I have colleagues who desperately want to know rough numbers and fanily and friends who really need to know asap if their jobs are on the list or if they need to make alternative arrangements.

I'm stil unsure why they couldnt have the list ready to be released yesterday after making the announcement. It was surely obvious everyone would want to know which professions it included.

Lynamic · 19/03/2020 07:54

It's just either exposure or giving up on the herd life for an individual. Everyone else can do what they want, unless they are trapped in a city

Dramalamaindeed · 19/03/2020 07:55

I think the only we can go back to normal is if we can prove you are immune when you’ve had it and everyone is tested over the next 6-8 months.

Those who have had it can return to society even during a lockdown and keep some services running meaning that each lockdown is less strict.

I expect 3-4 lockdowns over the next 12-18 months until a vaccine is developed.

No idea if this would work in reality

woodencoffeetable · 19/03/2020 07:56

bbc radio world service health check on sars is very informative.
worth a listen.

DivisionBelles · 19/03/2020 07:57

I'm torn on this second home thing. I live in Cornwall and my livelihood depends on tourists renting homes here. No tourists, no job essentially. On the other hand, I am acutely aware that we have one major hospital to cover the entire county and that is already overstretched as it is.

At the moment, our business is booming with people looking to come here. For how much longer they'll be allowed to though, I don't know. If this goes on for most of the summer, as I fear it's likely to, then I won't have a job. Then we have the added complication of angry people who neglected to take out holiday insurance demanding a refund. It's not a nice thing to have to tell them, that it doesn't work like that.

ofwarren · 19/03/2020 07:57

@TheCanterburyWhales
Yes! The amount of posters on here telling us that it would never happen and we were just 'scaremongering'.
We saw this coming weeks ago.

Comenext · 19/03/2020 08:00

@Wynona
I am worried that the Government/Boris are adopting a 'wait and see' plan which has not really worked well so far.
Their general philosophy seems to be 'We will cross that bridge when we come to it' and there is no overview yet.
By the way, this is a comment/opinion and not a political point from me.
I feel things have gone too far to bring party politics into the debate right now. This is where we are and this is what we have to cope with.

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/03/2020 08:00

not sure people will be able to rely on a village shop for weeks particularly for dietary requirements.

I suspect dietary requirements will have to be put on hold for a while for many

BF's school have a list of those they think will need childcare (secondary school). It's those in years 7/8 with qualifying parents (two parents both key workers or single parent key worker) and then vulnerable children (largely those in foster care). They are going to be running a skeleton staff and it won't be lessons, just adult supervision. Obviously this might change when the government provides more information.

DD lives by herself in a flat with no outdoor space in London. I have advised her to get out of there (she will be driving) and work from here asap, rather than be stuck on her own. I think that's sensible, not selfish.

She is planning to isolate herself for 7 days, and we can fortunately let her have her bedroom, a separate bathroom and living space.
