Will Hazell @whazell
Education Secretary @GavinWilliamson on @BBCr4today says that key workers & vulnerable pupils - who will still be looked after in schools - will make up roughly 10% of a schools normal roll.

Williamson says Government wants students to receive GCSE and A level grades in August as normal. Says will reveal details of approach tomorrow.

Simon Nixon@simon_nixon
Good letter to ⁦*@thetimes*⁩. It’s clear that Britain has all the facilities necessary for the government to have massively ramped up testing weeks ago. Baffling why it hasn’t happened.

DM works in caring role, had to go into work with a cough as no one else to cover her, she then had to cover someone's sleep in shift.

4cats2kids · 19/03/2020 09:10

I’m in Cornwall. I second alib. Hard to find certain things in supermarkets.

And we have a massive elderly population, so please be considerate about social distancing/ self-isolation to protect them.

Bear in mind our services are not as extensive as the rest of the country, especially if you are in a vulnerable group and might need to be hospitalised.

OrangeSamphire · 19/03/2020 09:13

I'm in Cornwall too. Please do not come.

There is one hospital. And another over the bridge in Plymouth. Both are straining.

Also, we're at the very end of the supply chain down here, so don't expect to find anything in the supermarkets. You might find a farm shop, but they're bare too.

In Spain, many of the beaches are now barricaded off because too many people showed up at the coast. I can see that happening here so don't think you'll be enjoying empty windswept beaches. If you all come here, you'll be stuck indoors. Stay home.

Monday, Tesco in Truro was full of pensioners preparing for lockdown. One old man I was chatting to had a trolley full of dog food and toys so his dogs would be ok. I nearly burst into tears.

Helen Warrell @helenwarrell
Military steps up around Europe to fight the virus:
-UK puts 20,000 troops on standby
-Germany deploys Bundeswehr
-French army builds field hospitals
-Italian defence factories start production of face masks & disinfectant

OrangeSamphire · 19/03/2020 09:16

@4cats2kids it was the same in my local farm shop. Pensioners trying to get the last few sacks of potatoes and coming out of the pet shop next door with dog/cat food.

I managed to get fresh veg. But I can't get any of the items my son normally has (he's disabled, can't chew, has allergies). I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to feed him safely if this continues. We have some supplies, but they are finite and I don't seem to be able to replenish them.

justchecking1 · 19/03/2020 09:27

orange can you get a stick blender? You could purée food for him then?

Elephantgrey · 19/03/2020 09:41

MurraytheMonk my mum has been told that my granny’s home carers May no longer be able to come as they are being redeployed care homes. She is now safely with my mum.

It would be nice to think they had a plan like that yin your area but the poor people who don’t have family to help them. 😢

I agree with everyone who says don’t go to Cornwall. Their hospital has to close to ambulances at key points in the winter.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 19/03/2020 09:41

You could possibly get one on amazon for delivery tomorrow? I know I could, but depends where you are

thanks @justchecking1, we've got a Nutri-bullet style thing, it's more the specific food items he needs that we will struggle with, e.g. he only drinks Oatly. But it's sold out everywhere because it's a long life milk and others have bulk bought. We have enough for a couple of weeks, just hoping it comes back into stock somewhere and that we can get an online delivery slot, because we can't go out.

Also - sweet potatoes. They make up about 20% of his diet.

He can't eat pasta or rice because they give him gastro issues that could require medical care.

Struggling!

SistemaAddict · 19/03/2020 09:58

Morning all.
Amazon are under pressure as I've just ordered my mum some dvds and even with prime delivery they won't arrive until next Tuesday. It's not like they are urgent but just to let posters know that things are taking longer.

We are having a quiet day today and adjusting to the new status quo.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 10:04

Not sure depending if you live 2 minutes walk away from a supermarket or not should depend on how you eat.

angry asian supermarket or corner shop near you?
they tend to be less busy and have bulk items.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 10:10

Plenty of them but will they shut.

I found frozen sweet potato chunks in a supermarket. Would he eat those?

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 10:18

Just received an email from DS school. They have said that until they receive a government approved list of key workers they are happy to accept parents definition of this. They are remaining open for those who have a educational plan and their siblings as well as those who have a care plan.

They've also said they understand they will be staying open during the school holidays. Which kind of suggests that key worker leave may be shelved.

I don't know how other schools are handling it or whether this will be the government line but that's where my sons school is currently at.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/03/2020 10:20

I'm struggling finding food for dd, she's coeliac, allergic to meat, dairy intolerant and numerous other allergies such as green beans, broccoli, cauliflower. I've just been to a farm shop and got a sack of potatoes. If nothing else we'll live on chips!

'A generation has died': Italian province struggles to bury its coronavirus dead
Coffins pile up and corpses are sealed off in homes as Bergamo’s funeral firms are overwhelmed

In Bergamo, a province of 1.2 million people in the Lombardy region, where 1,640 of the total deaths in the country have taken place, 3,993 people had contracted the virus by Tuesday. The death toll across the province is unclear, but CFB, the area’s largest funeral director, has carried out almost 600 burials or cremations since 1 March.

“In a normal month we would do about 120,” said Antonio Ricciardi, the president of CFB. “A generation has died in just over two weeks. We’ve never seen anything like this and it just makes you cry.”

There are about 80 funeral companies across Bergamo, each receiving dozens of calls an hour. A shortage of coffins as providers struggle to keep up with demand and funeral workers becoming infected with the virus are also hampering preparations.

A lot of these deaths are not being attributed to coronavirus. But there is a significantly higher number of deaths than is normal.

Former EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier has announced he has tested positive for coronavirus

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 10:28

Awaiting directive from HR that all staff leave will be cancelled. Can't wait to tell them all that on top of everything else.

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 10:29

Just spoke to adult care team at social services. Woman said they've got a lot of care homes county wide in the same position as mine.

Yamayo · 19/03/2020 10:30

I bet you a lot of people will be happy about Barnier... Angry
