Joe Murphy - 'Imminent: - pubs, cinemas, gyms, restaurants in London to be told to shut

Most drastic coronavirus action plan yet is to help stop our brilliant London NHS being overwhelmed with cases.

Stay home, save lives.'

Told or ordered - knowing this goverment it be a recomendation which plenty don't listen too.

Me and 7 other mom’s from my son’s year at school are all part of a WhatsApp group and one of them has just asked when we should start doing weekly play dates (hate that term) so we can keep in touch and the children can still see their friends, and asking for suggestions of where we could go....

It’s baffling.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 20/03/2020 13:21

Surely, the economy would not be able to cope with a year of these measures? I am not one for putting money over people at all (as my previous posts will tell you) but it would send us to the middle ages economy wise. You would be looking at 10s of millions unemployed after a year. No business would be able to cope with paying employees for that long.

I think this may be scare tactics to hopefully make people stick to the social distancing or at least I hope it is!

BiBiBirdie · 20/03/2020 13:25

Far apart from how worried the virus makes me, is how worrying I find the total lack of intelligence and sense as well as the unbridled selfishness of so many in the country
We know how bad this is
We have seen what happened to Italy (and we will end up in dire straits worse than theirs considering their health care is far far better funded).
Yet people are still in bars and restaurants

In Reading where I am, most stuff now is shut as the (Labour) council have shut it. All the leisure centres, the museum the cafes all shut for now and bus services have been reduced to bare minimum, which has led to the whole place looking like a ghost town. As a result we have 7 confirmed cases overall, 3 of which have already recovered as of yesterday
It proves if you take action and give people nothing to do, they stay home and don't get ill.

Givemeabreakpls · 20/03/2020 13:27

Genuinely don’t know how they’re going to get on top of this without shutting down non-essential services across the nation. I’m in the SW and honestly I don’t see much social isolation going on when I have to go out (just to drop food at parents or school run). Beauty salons, cafes still open; local pub still planning an outing!

Givemeabreakpls · 20/03/2020 13:28

I think a large proportion of people are still in firm denial. It’s insane.

WhyNotMe40 · 20/03/2020 13:29

Surely it's better for the economy and mental health to have several shorter periods of extremely strict lockdown nationwide, than dribs and drabs over a long time?

HouseElfy · 20/03/2020 13:30

Someone on a DIY Facebook group I'm on has posted saying IKEA have plants at 75% off. Cue millions of complete idiots piling on saying oooh yes , let's all go down there and get some.

Coronavirus: Urgent appeal for Brits to work on farms

Quartz2208 · 20/03/2020 13:31

whynotme40 that is what I think ultimately will happen peroids of extremely strict lockdown nationwide then periods of less so (including schools going back).

Personally I think that is what the modelling shows at the moment I think they are hoping it somehow will disappear

Blackopal · 20/03/2020 13:36

Yes, parents on my group also suggesting meet ups Confused

BarbedBloom · 20/03/2020 13:37

Did anyone see that on the news? 1 person dying every ten minutes in Iran

SpringIsBlooming · 20/03/2020 13:41

People are in denial and think this will all be over in two weeks and they can go off on their summer holidays. The sooner they realise how serious the situation is, the sooner they can get their head around it. I fear for how people will react when they finally wake up to this situation.

MurrayTheMonk · 20/03/2020 13:42

I'd think so whynotme... because otherwise people just don't get it...

Im not far from really falling out with my sister over this. It knocks Brexit into a cocked hat in terms of how angry I am with her right now...
she has just taken my dad some Eccles cakes she got in a local cafe this morning.Into the house. Is it essential? No? Could you have left them on the step?
Is it fucking hard to understand????!!

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 13:43

Chris Smyth - 'Restrictions on social life " need to be in place for at least most of a year" - can be eased for some of that time.
School closures are not in the original package, with scepticism about whether the effect is worth sending kids to their grandchildren and vulnerable missing school meals.
Also delay peak by max three weeks
To enforce social isolation " allowing others to express disapproval" is considered, along with stressing "we're all in it together"
If football is banned, theatre has to go too so as not to look snobbish, SAGE suggests

@Eeyoresstickhouse the longer we leave it before we lockdown, the longer we will have to stay locked down. If we had locked down already/sooner, we could have kept number of cases lower and returned to normal faster/more easily

Our problem is Boris’s infantile ego and his disillusionment that the UK know better than the rest of the world. He is an utter prick

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 13:46

BBC Cumbria - 'The first two coronavirus-related deaths in Cumbria have been confirmed by Cumbria County Council'

I live in a labour council area and the lesirue centres are shutting soon but not yet - the libary is still open but then it's mostly used for the wifi.

All council run leisure centres are closed here (Leeds), a lot of restaurants seem to be closing or moving towards take away only. We seem to be taking it more seriously up here, which is good to see!

Isabel Hardman - 'Yikes. Really hoping this isn’t necessary in UK: if people are able to exercise safely and without coming into contact with others, will be so much better for mental health - and I’d wager that it might help with long-term compliance.'

The new mental health rules might be to help deal with a surge of people needing inpatient mental health care.
