@ironneonclasp eh no they didn't!

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 21:47

On a more scientific forum there are suggestions that air quality in the areas of China and Italy where they are seeing the most critical cases and deaths is very poor. As well as smoking, lung function may have been poor pre infection contributing to more severe complications. This is a discussion based on observation rather than fact but that’s what epidemiology is all about, looking at all the possible contributing factors

Bodes Well for our cities then....

Horehound · 19/03/2020 21:48

Just read this "A disabled boy reportedly died after he was left without food, water or help when his his father and brother were quarantined."
On a piece in the guardian

So sad :( that poor boy

onlinelinda · 19/03/2020 21:48

Not posting or reading much but jumped on to say GP has monitored me all week by phone and now confirms probable cv. There still aren't tests so best they can offer.

Good news is that despite COPD diagnosis and reading all the horrors about that, I'm actually not too bad (day 4-5).

goingoverground · 19/03/2020 21:49

@mrshoho I believe Northwick Park has been taking patients with COVID-19 from all over the country for many weeks now because of its specialist status, not just the local area, so you would expect it to be one of the first hospitals to reach capacity. If that is any comfort...

woodencoffeetable · 19/03/2020 21:49

china historically has a different method of recording deaths than many countries.
that's why their (normal seasonal) flu death rate is low compared to other countries.
like putting down 'heart failure' without putting the reason why the patient had heart failure.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 21:50

Jim Waterston @jimwaterson
City AM becomes first print paper to stop printing because of Coronavirus. Hopes to go back to producing its 90,000 copies a day when commuters return. All staff from management to reporters asked to take a 50% pay cut next month and go online only.

Coquohvan · 19/03/2020 21:51

I have been very sceptical of China’s numbers and date of first cases.
1.3 billion people with such a low percentage having it!!!!

WHO were sceptical of the numbers too but they sent their own team in to investigate and found the data to be accurate:

www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

It is likely the severe restrictions have kept numbers down, which is exactly why we need to get on with lockdown if people won't stop going to the pub.

Givemeabreakpls · 19/03/2020 21:58

Looking at the Guardian, which is reporting a surge in cases in Italy possibly explained by people fleeing lockdown in the initially affected areas, it makes me think lockdown in the UK would be a national thing and not just solely in London. I’d imagine a lot of people would leave London if it was the only place affected initially?

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 22:00

@goingoverground not really comforting as this is due to many A&E closures within other local hospitals over the years this hospital houses the main A&E for a very large densly populated area. The infectious diseases unit is meant to be completely separated from the main hospital. Now critically ill will be ferried all over the place.

IronNeonClasp · 19/03/2020 22:00

OK. But I think they equipped themselves to deal with it better than we have considering we have had two months to prepare.

Thought Boris was AWFUL today and having a laugh at the end about probably not a good idea to be broadcasting from where they currently are. I still don't think there is an inch of seriousness of what is to come and we are completely ill equipped to deal with it.

My best friend has to continue teaching with no protective gear and I cannot imagine how medical staff are feeling.

Terrifying.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 22:00

I think this weekend will see the mass exodus and no sign of no movement lockdown coming by then.

invictus games (the hague) postponed for a year

Horehound · 19/03/2020 22:06

@IronNeonClasp I know, he was hideous. Blatantly bored of doing the podium talks

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2020 22:10

With regards the over-70s, they may be of a similar mindset to my parents who, although they're self-isolating, have said that they'd prefer to get something and die relatively quickly than end up at the mercy of the care system later on. I can kind of understand that PoV.

But, those that aren't isolating aren't considering others, are they? So it's selfish behaviour which I can't understand.

FWIW, Liverpool was dead yesterday lunch time when it's normally really busy, so people are taking notice.

I'm WFH for the foreseeable future and once the kids finish tomorrow we'll be pulling the drawbridge up and riding it out as well as we can. It's scary, but we need to stay calm and not worry the kids as trying to maintain an air of normality when it's really not normal is imperative for their mental health.

My dad is fuming as I tell him that people online are saying losing holiday money if schools go back in august is a minor problem.

13 priests in Bergamo have died. Not sure about elsewhere, but I suppose it's to be expected. Age, physical proximity to parishioners, many priests working in hospitals etc.
