I have been reading into doctors use of a drug that could help with this disease- not sure if you have heard of this?
It's called hydroxycholoroquine, it's an anti-viral drug used to treat malaria. I take it daily as I have Lupus. Some articles report that this drug seems effective for cover 19, and safe too. So fingers crossed!

Also, as it is a drug to treat/prevent malaria, I wonder whether this is the reason why Covid 19 hasn't ripped through Africa?

LilMissRe · 19/03/2020 21:14

*Covid 19 sorry- typo

RTB Flowers. If any consolation, my own immunosuppressed DH is still insisting on working, says he practices self-isolation at work (tbf it is his company). Meanwhile DD1 got home from french ski resort last night and now has a temp...

Calmonthesurfacebut · 19/03/2020 21:15

I’m ill and i’m scared. My cough has progressed, I still have no temp, but oh how I ache, my glands are up my ears are buzzing, my blood pressure is 148/105 (I take medication). It could of course just be a normal cold, but the cough is unusual.
DH has been in for two days, he went to the office, late yesterday, got some files, he’s desperately trying to save jobs for 125 people, he’s also feeling dizzy. 15 yr has been in her room most of the day.

Trying to keep clear of everyone is so difficult, practically impossible. DH is supposed to sign some important documents tomorrow, but obviously can’t go.

I came to bed at 8pm, had a little cry, I can’t help but worry. We have no close family to help either, luckily I did some prepping.

If they tested, at least we’d know one way or another.

Did anyone watch C4 news tonight where they followed doctors and paramedics doing house calls assessing patients in Bergamo?

It was deeply shocking and heartbreaking. It really kind of walloped me in the solar plexus.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 19/03/2020 21:22

I can understand people bit getting it though. Not everyone watches the news, not everyone is clued up on pandemics. Not everyone watches Boris flanked by his medical team on the podium. And I guess when they chat to friends they say its all rubbish... And ott and the media and and people who think it's more serious probably wouldn't say anything, and people who agree agree and there they go. Busy lives, carrying on.

If it wasn't for my life experiences of how very quickly life can go from totally normal to utterly apocalyptic I probably wouldn't be paying attention.

I've Had my eye on this since January wondering why we've been slow too react.

I'm terrified.

I've been forced to work every day in school which has been awful.

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 21:22

And so it begins. Our hospital in Harrow NW London has reached capacity. This hospital has a renowned specialist infectious diseases unit.

Schools Week @schoolweek
BREAKING: Health secretary @MattHancock confirms the list of those roles defined as 'key workers' for the purpose of school care 'will be published tomorrow', not today, as originally promised

'This is a decision nobody wanted to take. It's just an awful situation' says @MattHancock

'We'll get that information out as fast as we possibly can'

This will be particularly worrying for schools, given warnings from @NAHTnews that they may face having to prioritise pupils 'according to need'

Elaine Walton @elainewalton
So I’ve just heard from a friend that her child (with EHCP) is probably not going to be able to go to school due to teacher shortages and others (social care, children of key workers) will take priority. Seriously?

screamer1 · 19/03/2020 21:26

Does anyone know, if you've had vague symptoms for 5 days. A bit unwell, Riley feeling but nothing so bad it's keeping you in be. Is the likelihood that it's not going to rapidly deteriorate?

BeetrootBasil · 19/03/2020 21:26

Does anyone else see massive holes when Boris speaks? I felt like today was to appease business, the plight of the poor, unions (mention of keeping tubes and buses running)...but this is going to be a disaster without more stringent measures. His main interest is economic so he does not want to lock down London. They have no evidence the measures are being effective as they say they are, and a high death rate in London, but he wants to leave people to make the right choices which not everyone is doing. Has he actually been out of Downing Street?

Lifesavesocialdistance · 19/03/2020 21:29

I must admit I do wonder what has compelled China to be truthfull at all?
So much face saving culture.

Why would they be truthfull?

HangingOverTheEdge · 19/03/2020 21:30

AngryRant Said:
300k die a year in the uk. So it be like an extra years worth of deaths.

This is incorrect. The death rate in UK in 2019 was 9.398 deaths per 1000 people, which over a population of 66,000,000 works out at 620,000, or nearly 1,700 per day.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 19/03/2020 21:31

Lilmis

Yes chlorineique has been mentioned.

AvocadoOwl · 19/03/2020 21:32

Also, does anyone think that, given how early Italy are in their epidemic and how their death total has now surpassed the reported deaths in China, that China may not have been truthful about their figures?

I was just looking at Worldometers and thinking exactly the same.

IronNeonClasp · 19/03/2020 21:32

China locked down after 3 days of cases. Like properly locked down and everyone obeyed...

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 21:35

We know China had a lot of deaths which weren't attributed to Covid-19 with people saying people died at home for an unexplained reason or attributed to something else.

We know that Bergamo has an unexplained higher than normal death rate which includes only a small number of officially identified covid-19 cases.

We'd need to know the total normal number of deaths (all causes) in Wuhan for the same period and compare with Jan - Marc this year to see if there was a discrepancy like Bergamo.

It points to a strong possibility that the number of deaths has been higher than reported officially.

AvocadoOwl · 19/03/2020 21:39

China locked down after 3 days of cases.

Hmm
willdoitinaminute · 19/03/2020 21:40

On a more scientific forum there are suggestions that air quality in the areas of China and Italy where they are seeing the most critical cases and deaths is very poor. As well as smoking, lung function may have been poor pre infection contributing to more severe complications. This is a discussion based on observation rather than fact but that’s what epidemiology is all about, looking at all the possible contributing factors.

Horehound · 19/03/2020 21:43

China have deffo lied imo.

ScatteredMama82 · 19/03/2020 21:43

My DH is military, based away from home mon-fri. If we go to lockdown, I guess he won’t be allowed to come home? (120 miles away).

IronNeonClasp · 19/03/2020 21:43

@AvocadoOwl OK no idea if three days statistically but they locked down. Watched a documentary on it last Sat. They locked down way sooner than we have - not basically.
