@RedToothBrush I think it hasn't sunk in to people get that people we know, will Die.

My mum said she sat really sad yesterday and just thought that there probably will be deaths in our family because of it.
And I saw her last week but is that the last time we will see each other? You just never know.

Jade1976 · 19/03/2020 20:49

For everyone saying why are pubs/restaraunts still open, one of DHs good friends is the head chef at a gastropub. Yesterday with 24hours notice they sacked all zero hours, casual workers. Today for the good of the company all other staff have been asked to take at least 6 weeks unpaid leave. What are these people meant to do for money? Incidently the man that owns the pub chain also owns a much bigger business and is worth hundreds of million, disgusting.

The influential burges group is campaigning against lockdowns

age doesnt necessarily make you healthy though, obesity for example is a known risk factor, smoking etc plus it doesnt say they dont have underlying health conditions

and the 39 year old gym goer is now recovering well (and as an aside took ibuprofen I still think that is definitely a factor in this)

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:51

300k die a year in the uk. So it be like an extra years worth of deaths.

Just had a refreshingly candid public health notice email from my local council:

There are XX confirmed cases of coronavirus in AnyBorough

Currently the number of confirmed cases does not reflect the likely number of individuals who have contracted coronavirus. This is because community testing is no longer being undertaken.

willdoitinaminute · 19/03/2020 20:52

The Chinese and Italian data suggests that multiple exposures to the virus significantly increase your risk of having a severe infection and/ or dying whatever your age (adult) so if these outliers ( those who don’t seem to fall into typical categories) have been continuing to carry on regardless they may have increased their exposure rate leading to more severe infection. I suspect gyms are absolutely swimming with the Coronavirus so doesn’t surprise me the gym bunny has succumbed.
THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY WE SHOULD BE SOCIAL DISTANCING.

Quartz2208 · 19/03/2020 20:55

@Angryrant55 I think that is too simplistic though - I imagine a percentage (the motor neurone sufferer being one) who could very well have died this year anyway from catching an infection, and that is what is so difficult with this - distinguishing between the extra unexpected deaths and those who could very well have died had they gotten any other infection

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:55

I think that is mostly for medical people.

Interestingly plenty of couples both get it with sometimes a difference in severity sometimes not. On the radio they was a report from madrid an elderly man died, his wife had it but wasn't too ill.

Which is why our HCP's need decent PPE now if we want to have any doctors and nurses left to treat everyone else.

tryingtoprep · 19/03/2020 20:56

I agree with all the comments on this page.

ElizabethMountbatten I hope that's what happens.

I think some of the elderly (and younger) people going about their business are the types with blind faith in the government. I spoke to an elderly relative yesterday. They just don't quite get it. They're too frightened to face reality but also they think the government would insist rather than ask if things were that serious. I feel upset for people who haven't grasped the seriousness yet. Some are very selfish I'm Alright Jack's but others are simply too trusting in the government. They believe the government will protect everyone and the NHS will treat all who needs it. They don't deserve to die because of not being very bright or for being too scared to admit reality. This is on the government (and some of the media for the unpleasant and possibly inaccurate "it's only the very frail" message).

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:56

And quite a few others - the COPD suffer in birmingham sadly didnt sound like he had too much time left in him if he didnt get it.

"40% of hospitalised US patients are 20-50. There is also a healthy gym going no underlying conditions 39 year old woman who was in intensive care in London."

Yes, I'm very scared now. I'm 66 and my husband is 73 and of course we're self-isolating, but I believe we will get it at some stage. If fit and healthy much younger people (like the 39 yr old mentioned) are fighting for their lives in ICU we haven't got a chance.
I'm worried that I won't see my daughter again. She's 29 and lives alone 30 miles away. I'm also worried that she will get it and will be one of those who becomes dangerously ill. Everything seems so hopeless.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 21:00

I've had a massive row with DH tonight about him and his mates and what they've been up to this week.

He has broken social distancing idea more times than I care to count (including to go drinking I have discovered) whilst simultaneously saying that if any shopping needs to be done in next couple of weeks he will go out with his mask and gloves on and not risk me or DS leaving the house.

One of his mates left a group chat because he's struggling to cope with the thought his dad might die. Someone said something about why on earth hadn't they closed the schools? Nothing more. However this was apparently 'too negative'.

Two nights later he hosted an illicit drinking session in his garage with friends.

The cognitive dissonance of it is ridiculous.

I can not get my head around the thought processes going on in the minds of some otherwise very intelligent people.

Everyone is losing their minds already.

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 21:00

It was only as far back as 16th March that Boris was claiming that their evidence showed there was no benefit to closing the schools. So anything is possible. I think as a pp said it may be more of a country wide shutdown. Notice as well how he waffles about the word 'lockdown'. He can just call it something different if it comes to it or blame us all for not doing as we are told forcing him to do it.

CustardySergeant · 19/03/2020 21:02

To add to my post above, we're getting deliveries of food -so far- but they may stop and infection is possible that way although we are very careful and we may have to venture out for food and other things at some time in the future. One way or another we will be exposed and one or both of us could die. I'm using a desktop PC with no webcam or microphone so can't Skype my daughter at any stage. It's terrifying and relentless.

CharlieTangoBanana · 19/03/2020 21:02

My DS1 has just lost his job and with it his home. He was a chef. Heartbreaking

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 21:04

Could you not order a camera and Microphone to be delivered to you.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 19/03/2020 21:06

The comment about "not letting them win" summed it all up really imo. People are used to a "bad guy" whether they're in the 80's and it was Hitler, or whether they are in their 20's and it's ISIS. They're used to the idea that to carry on with life as before is the best thing to do against any foe - subconsciously not realising that CV isn't a bad guy, it's not even alive.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 21:08

Dh looked for webcams online today. There are none. Anywhere.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 21:09

Boris never said never for schools - putting out never or 0 percent is not the language you use for something you considering.

I have an ASDA delivery expected first thing, we'll see how that goes...

willdoitinaminute · 19/03/2020 21:12

going I am a dentist and at present we have been hung out to dry by NHS dentistry until today we have been advised to carry on as normal despite social distancing because we already follow the stringent infection control measures being used by HCP treating infected patients in hospital. However we can’t get hold of masks etc etc because the Trusts have been panic buying for the last two weeks. Hand sanitiser has sold out. But we cannot screen our patients who may be asymptomatic and just as infectious as those in ICU.
A We have been seeing 40+ patients a day in the lead up to this pandemic and I am surprised we have not seen infection in the dental community.
I do suspect that I had the virus over half term. All the symptoms and probably only had a 1 to 1 exposure fortunately I was off work for nearly two weeks over this period so probably not a risk to my patients.
I am in the vulnerable group and have been self isolating until we are given clear directive on how to limit the risk of infection.
I will be requesting the antibody test when it becomes available so I can return to work although currently most people are sensibly cancelling non essential appointments.
It is likely we will be called on to work in other areas of NHS when this situation explodes. I want to ‘do my bit’ I have a lot of HCP who are putting their lives on the line for STUPID people who can’t follow the advice they are given. But then that’s pretty much normal in healthcare which is probably why you are not hearing any doctors ranting about it.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 19/03/2020 21:12

If you have a mobile you can set up a WhatsApp chat and facetime so that you can see your daughter. My elderly Dad is using it now.
