Hi all

I’m very surprised by Boris saying there’s no plans to lockdown london.

Does anyone have any further thoughts on this? Id be interested. It seems very surprising to me that they didn’t lock down today. Is he perhaps just needing time to get permits for travel issued etc?

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:11

Nope because his spokesperson said zero chance of doing it - not easy to u turn.

My best friend lives in Barcelona and she's just told me it looks like there will be military lockdown next week and that hospitals are on the brink of collapse...looks likely by the weekend..shit.

willdoitinaminute · 19/03/2020 20:16

The infections figures for today are very low considering that most people testing positive would have probably caught the virus before social distancing was advised, particularly in London which appeared to ignore the advice until today. Could they be waiting until tomorrow to announce a significant increase in infected in order to have more impact when they enforce lockdown. Maybe they have been monitoring the possible mass exodus from the capital and know that locking down London on its own is pointless, better to do total uk lockdown tomorrow night, backing it up with sensational increase in cases suggesting we are heading up a much steeper climb up the graph.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:18

Spain is already in lock-down - are the military going to be providing food so people can be banned from having to go out for groceries or medicine.

Horehound · 19/03/2020 20:21

@angryranr55 yea I know it is but people were still going to work. So yes, that will stop when the military come in.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 20:21

Meanwhile my pokemon go group chat is buzzing along as normal and one of my mates popped into the local boozer to support the community.

We are two maybe three weeks away from what's happening in Spain and everyone here is just just going 'la la la' without a care in the world.

Sainsbury’s in Pontypridd just now. No meat, veg, bread, tinned tomatoes, pasta, eggs or loo roll. And to cap it all they were playing White Christmas.

I am living in an all British channel 4 dystopia.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:26

I thought only essential workers are working in Spain - is everyone going to have to live at work then.

I think boris has decided even mass deaths is better than lockdown.

GameStop Instructs Employees to Ignore Law Enforcement And Not Shut Down
A memo sent to workers says GameStop views themselves as "essential retail.

GameStop has informed employees that if local authorities attempt to shut down their store in states with orders to close establishments deemed “non-essential,” they are to inform law enforcement that the company believes they should be “classified as essential retail and therefore is able to remain open during this time.” The instructions came with a flyer to hand over to law enforcement, and includes the phone number for GameStop’s corporate office.

And

“They've essentially said to disobey law enforcement in any state that shuts down non essential retail,” said one employee, who asked to remain anonymous, “as they believe we are providing an essential service to people that shop at a video game store.”

And

While other companies have voluntarily shut down amidst the pandemic, GameStop has remained open. This week is a big week for video games, with both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal launching tomorrow. Only in recent days did GameStop make the decision to cancel its late night launches, where consumers line up to buy games as soon as they’re available. This morning, GameStop announced it would start selling Doom Eternal today—a full day early—to try and separate the Doom and Animal Crossing Crowds.

Its like sleeping walking into abject chaos.

For so many people it’s a case of ‘Everything’s fine!’

Until it isn’t.

Denial is the first stage of grieving and it seems millions are grieving the loss of normal life.
Bargaining is also prevalent, ‘I’ll only pop out for an hour.’, ‘It’ll be fine if I wash my hands.’, ‘We’re only going into Starbucks and nowhere else.’.
I hope not to be close to when they realise that the government hasn’t got it all under control, life isn’t going back to normal anytime soon and the the anger hits.

I've lost my mind haven't I?

I'm just 'hysterical' aren't I?

Except of course I have a fair idea of what the news will be like in 2 weeks time. And I have no idea who I know will end up in hospital. Or worse.

AutumnRose1 · 19/03/2020 20:35

To those saying about the whole country going into lockdown, would that mean you’re only allowed within a certain distance of your home?

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 20:38

Bog roll update: man in the corner shop went to Trafford cost-co last night. People queued for 90 mins outside and then were handed ONE bog roll each straight off the truck. The delivery never made it to the shelves. Maniacs

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:38

RedToothBrush 40% of hospitalised US patients are 20-50. There is also a healthy gym going no underlying conditions 39 year old woman who was in intensive care in London.

willdoitinaminute · 19/03/2020 20:45

You will be allowed out for essential journeys only

  • to buy food
  • to see GP or other emergency healthcare
  • to work IF you are classified as an essential worker
Otherwise you are not allowed out into public areas ie past your front gate.
Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 20:47

Remember they also vowed no ban on dog walking.

I think i a lot of the elderly who family are absent or far away are going out because they too prod to ask for help - even in lock-downs they will as they don;t have the internet to get help.
