I think the exit strategy is flattening the curve, to enable time to get a treatment plan in place to minimise the impact on the health service and ultimately getting a vaccine

todayisnottuesday · 19/03/2020 16:23

I love watching the people behind trump. You can see they're rolling their eyes in their heads

Yes!! This is one of the main reasons I watched him earlier Grin

The "china virus' - wtf?

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 16:23

@cjt110 If they had listened to us at wouldn't be in this mess. People laughed when I started getting ready in January.

Thank you everyone from me, this thread keeps me sane 💐

SunshineCake · 19/03/2020 16:24

I'm puzzled by people asking for today's figures as they are already out.

Deaths - 137, 128 in England.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 16:24

I agree that education is more important than holidays, though- and realistically who will want to travel this summer?

Travel abroad might not be an option even if we want to if other countries won't let us in.

Domestic travel might be possible but it depends on what is left of the tourism industry in August.

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 16:25

Thats just N. Ireland and Scotland.

I think we're in for a big rise and Boris will use them in his next briefing with more big changes.

SabineSchmetterling · 19/03/2020 16:26

The number of deaths was published but not the number of positive tests for England.

kirinm · 19/03/2020 16:26

No those figures are England. 128 in England and 133 in total.

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 16:28

Is that deaths? The new number of positive tests hasn't been announced

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 19/03/2020 16:28

What about total number of cases?

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 16:28

@Wynona As things stand there is no foreseeable exit plan. The quote 'This is going to be a marathon not a sprint' is probably the most realistic expectation. Just to confirm schools are shutting indefinitely. This gives an idea of the plan.

Until either a successful vaccine is created or there is a successful treatment plan using approved medication then this virus is not going away. The measures being taken are to suppress the spread to give the NHS some chance of dealing with infected patients. I know you've asked this question a couple of times but this really is the reality right now. Depressing times...

KOKOagainandagain · 19/03/2020 16:29

I thought that everyone knew that 'minimise impact on the NHS' meant that the NHS would be overwhelmed by many times and it was just a question of volume and timing?

Rainbowunicat · 19/03/2020 16:30

@SansaSnark when you say internal communications, where have you seen this? I'm a teacher in England and I haven't been told all holidays are cancelled or anything along those lines! Is this just your school or LA or have I missed something from the DfE?

SunshineCake · 19/03/2020 16:31

It is England and the deaths as I said. The cases are the results not out yet.

cjt110 · 19/03/2020 16:34

Is that total deaths or in 24 hours?

AliciaWhiskers · 19/03/2020 16:36

Wonder why the late release of the figures. I hope it’s not hideous. Being released at the daily update maybe?

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 16:36

Rainbowunicat DS's head teacher has said she expects the school to stay open during the school holidays. Obviously there is a suggestion somewhere that they will need to because key workers who normally would be on holiday now no longer will be, so key workers will need childcare assistance as it won't be available privately.

That also suggests a possible cancellation of leave for key workers - particularly NHS workers - being a possibility.

In Italy all leave for medics has been cancelled so I suspect its something that's on the cards as a possibility here too.

Nothing firm but you'd have to assume that's part of emergency planning. The NHS can't have loads of workers off for Easter if we are just going into a peak of demand which is what the projections suggest will be the case.

todayisnottuesday · 19/03/2020 16:37

The Queen has now issued a statement I see. Love how they have had to mention that poor Prince Phillip is indeed still with us in light of all the rumours that have been going around. Strong as an ox that one!

Saucery · 19/03/2020 16:37

Where possible, we would encourage settings to stay open for this purpose [key worker childcare] throughout the Easter holidays.

From Gavin Williamson’s statement yesterday. So not set in stone, but a possibility.

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 16:42

Is there a daily presser today?

ElizabethG81 · 19/03/2020 16:44

I think my work isn't really getting what social distancing means (which is particularly concerning as they are a government body). They've issued guidance on what parents can do now schools are closing, and are suggesting neighbours and friends help out with childcare Confused

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2020 16:45

All job centre appointments cancelled.

Dwp have just announced.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 16:49

Sam Coates Sky - 'Ahead of the 4th daily press conference with Boris Johnson what do we expect.

  • clarity that some of the rumours about banning travel in and out of London are untrue
  • more details of the meeting with London mayor Sadiq Khan
  • questions on emergency legislation.'

Young people need to stop meeting in pubs and spreading coronavirus, chief scientific advisor warns
Professor Sir Patrick Vallance has called on people in their 20s and 30s to cease mixing in public to prevent spread of disease

Young people are indifferent to the coronavirus risk and are spreading it to the elderly by continuing to meet in pubs and restaurants, the Government’s chief scientific advisor has warned.

Prof Sir Patrick Vallance called on people in their 20s and 30s to cease mixing in public, saying “it needs to stop”.

And

“So what we absolutely shouldn’t encourage is the idea that young people somehow can ignore it because they’re going to be fine
