Sebastian Payne - 'Most striking new powers in the emergency Coronavirus Bill are dealing with "potentially infectious" persons. Matt Hancock has the ability to declare a "transmission control period" in which public health officers can order those suspected to have coronavirus to go for tests.'

I was looking at the number of cases by local authority yesterday.

Birmingham and the surrounding satellite towns looked particularly bad, though not as bad as London. Sheffield doesn't look great either. Otherwise its the SE generally (particularly Hampshire) that's got more cases than other places.

It's also not great in Devon and Cumbria when you consider the size of the populations and infrastructure in both.

I think it will get interesting in Liverpool and Manchester from the middle to the end of next week. They are next on the list. Followed by Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire I suspect.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 19/03/2020 15:48

Love the people demanding a lockdown because they have thousands in savings so will be ok.

cjt110 · 19/03/2020 15:48

Omg it's like watching a comedy act watching Trump. I've switched it off - it's worse than Ant and Dec!

Saucery · 19/03/2020 15:49

Yes, PLEASE TEST US! Honestly, I’m so fed up of this bollocks about compulsory testing. I would like to be tested. Round me up and fucking TEST ME!

SansaSnark · 19/03/2020 15:52

Devon definitely had an early cluster of cases in Torbay, and I think a fair amount of contact testing was done. I don't know if that's skewing the numbers, or if they really are higher, but it is concerning. Infrastructure-wise they are a bit better off than Cornwall, though.

Might reopen in August for the new year 11's prehaps. Depends through how international travel is - if travel from the uk to spain etc has resumed and companies are honouring holidays rather than cancelling moving the schools back to august might be akward - people will tMost likely international travel wont be back and many will be refunded but that is an issue if things are no longer being cancelled.

Sebastian Payne - 'Immigration and police officers will have the powers to direct or force individuals to go for coronavirus assessment/testing.
If found to be positive, they can be ordered to self-isolate for 14 days, And if they fail to do so, persons can be fined up to £1,000 (aka level 3).'

No offence, but fuck holidays. Kids need to be back into schools as soon as its safe to have them there IMO.

CharlieTangoBanana · 19/03/2020 15:59

@RedToothBrush why do you suspect Derbyshire I have family there.

Wynona · 19/03/2020 15:59

What I really want to know is what is the exit strategy?

I suspect the public will accept the measures for lets say 6 weeks. By that time there should be enough supplies and support for NHS. Then what? Let's say there are no more cases. Does the virus just disappear? I doubt it. What is the alternative? People have to become infected. I doubt there will be a vaccine ready by then, so there has to be a tough decision to be made.

Namechangervaver · 19/03/2020 16:01

Is there somewhere that I can see easily what the daily increase in deaths in different countries has been? Because we're not widely testing in the UK, I think the daily increase in deaths is probably the most meaningful measure

SansaSnark · 19/03/2020 16:01

In internal communications to teachers, holidays have been cancelled up until August- we're expected to come in on a rota basis to look after the children who will be coming in.

I'm not sure if a full opening would be viable in August, but I think some schools will try and make it work if they can.

I agree that education is more important than holidays, though- and realistically who will want to travel this summer?

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 16:01

New York rules out lockdown. That will slow Boris down doing it

Lynamic · 19/03/2020 16:02

Thank god if this is true. A few weeks ago it would have contained the virus, now it's already everywhere, every individual just needs to proceed at their own risk. Don't worry I will wear PPE when I get to your village

wintertravel1980 · 19/03/2020 16:16

What I really want to know is what is the exit strategy?

Either vaccine (which is long term) or cure / partial cure that significantly reduces risk of developing pneumonia and needing ICU support. The latter is probably more feasible. Suppression on its own will not resolve the issue completely.

May I just say, to all the regulars (and irregulars Grin) on this post, thanks for keeping me up to date with factual, actual news and interesting debates.

Derbyshire has 27 cases which is high for a more rural county that doesn't commute into London. Derby itself has 11 cases. For a county which isn't densely populated and doesn't have great infrastructure that could be a problem.

You'd expect a lot of serious health cases to go to Sheffield normally but Sheffield already looks ahead of the curve compared to other places. Perhaps precisely because cases from Derbyshire are going there already as well as local cases (the data is about where people are bring treated rather than where people live).
