Do you think the Queen should address the nation?

Just that really.

I wonder if it would help people 'pull together'. Whether you are a Royalist or not I think it might help allay some fears.

Of course, I am aware that the Queen is probably worrying about herself and her DH etc.

@FATEdestiny exactly. Maybe a televised speech isn't appropriate at present for obvious reasons but a statement or something? I don't wish her or the rest of them any ill but its something I thought about today then I saw this thread

Lexilooo · 18/03/2020 12:51

If not the Queen then Charles or William could give an address on her behalf. It does seem odd not to hear from them.

The Queen is also head of the church of england and should be playing a part in asking people not to attend group worship as the pope has.

Dramadrama · 18/03/2020 12:53

I think some older people might find her telling them to stay in their homes is what they need to hear.

Rocketmam · 18/03/2020 12:53

@TheMemoryLingers I know that. Just thought it might stick in some people's craws to see her speaking from her position of extreme privilege while their loved ones are dying unnecessarily.

I personally think she should, am just aware of how it will seem to some.

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 18/03/2020 12:53

No, I think an almost ninety four year old woman should be isolating herself and not mixing with assorted camera/sound/producers/aides etc more than she already has to.

At her age it could be the very thing that ends her life.

What could she say? "It's shit isn't it.. one is in isolation too!"

Cremebrule · 18/03/2020 12:54

I wonder if they will this weekend when the advice is supposed to kick in properly. I think a speech from her is probably needed but could be especially poignant as someone in the at risk group. There are a lot of older people ignoring the advice. I think maybe more shops and the garden centres should be doing older/vulnerable hours. I drove passed our garden centre and it was rammed.

Natsel84 · 18/03/2020 12:54

Although I think she should address the country .
I think she will leave it to her pre written christmas speech to say anything .

TheMemoryLingers · 18/03/2020 12:55

Yes, I see what you mean, Rocketmam. In a broader sense, the whole existence of the RF sticks in my craw but seeing as they're here and the Queen, especially, has a lot of 'fans' even amongst those who don't like the others, they might as well serve a purpose.

Rocketmam · 18/03/2020 12:56

they might as well serve a purpose.

Exactly @TheMemoryLingers

FATEdestiny · 18/03/2020 12:56

It doesn't even need to be televised. Usually she just releases a written statement, see attached as an example.

It is very odd that this hasn't already happened.

Do you think the Queen should address the nation?
thepeopleversuswork · 18/03/2020 12:59

Probably not a bad shout for the oldies actually. Shades of WWII etc.

I personally would prefer to hear from a competent government than from the Royal Family.

nannybeach · 18/03/2020 13:01

I am not a royalist, but she does work damn hard, she was born to the job, anyone who thinks its easy, should wonder why we had the mexit. How many people work full time at her age

KaliforniaDreamz · 18/03/2020 13:01

Lexilooo Westminster abbey finally closed yesterday.
from the website yesterday -
In line with recommendations from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York for the Church of England, the Abbey is suspending public worship and general visiting with immediate effect.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 18/03/2020 13:03

Despite all the masses of coverage of The Queen moving to Windsor Castle the Royal Standard is not flying at the moment (which it always does when she is in residence) so it is all slightly odd I think...

Durgasarrow · 18/03/2020 13:05

What the hell is she there for? She's supposed to be addressing national crises. Get on with it, Madame.

FATEdestiny · 18/03/2020 13:05

Ohhh. I wonder if she's in a medical facility? Or maybe it's a security issue.

ViciousJackdaw · 18/03/2020 13:09

Let's keep the Queen safe, the last thing we need right now is Operation London Bridge.

eddiemairswife · 18/03/2020 13:10

Strictly speaking, she wasn't born to the job, as her uncle was heir to the throne and her mother was of child-bearing age, so could have had several boys. And her uncle could have married a 'suitable' woman and had several of his own children.

floffel · 18/03/2020 13:10

@NoemieNioche

God no. Why?

One of the upsides of all this is that it will highlight what a complete and utter fucking irrelevance the royal family is.

** - THIS!!!! Hopefully the virus is the last nail in the coffin for this anachronism - no place at all in our society

timetest · 18/03/2020 13:14

No. She’s in the at risk category as is Prince Charles and ( I think) Princess Anne. They should set an example by staying home .

Boogiewoogietoo · 18/03/2020 13:17

I think it would be a good idea, but not if it puts the Queen at increased risk.

viques · 18/03/2020 13:18

Be nice if she offered up one of her homes to be used as an emergency hospital. I think I would rather be poorly in Windsor castle than a Best Western economy room.

eddiemairswife · 18/03/2020 13:24

She doesn't need to be put at risk; she can Skype.

CiderWithRosy · 18/03/2020 13:36

No, of course not.

Lexilooo · 18/03/2020 13:40

Actually Prince Charles being only just over 70 and generally active might be a more relatable message for the older people who are being resistant to isolating because they don't consider themselves vulnerable old folk.

Charles speaking to people of his age about their need to be responsible and socially distance even if well would work and it would fit with him taking more responsibility from the Queen. It could be done from his garden with minimal crew to reduce the risk.

It is very odd that the Royal Family haven't spoken about the situation here or a few weeks ago about Italy and China. They normally send their thoughts and prayers regarding foreign disasters and major situations at home.
