Do you think the Queen should address the nation?

Just that really.

I wonder if it would help people 'pull together'. Whether you are a Royalist or not I think it might help allay some fears.

Of course, I am aware that the Queen is probably worrying about herself and her DH etc.

DS is convinced that Philip is no more, as plenty of coverage of the Queen moving to Windsor but no mention of Philip.

implantsandaDyson · 18/03/2020 12:34

No, I don't see what relevance it would be to lots of people. I know my parents couldn't really give two shiny shites how the Queen is getting on. They're more worried about kids on low wages/gig economy, my Nana now in lockdown (for want of a better word) in her nursing home, not seeing their grandkids, confusion over schools closing, household bills, their own health, small businesses ,wedding being cancelled etc. I can think of very few things the Queen could say that would have relevance to their lives.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/03/2020 12:34

Is she is self isolating, as we have asked the nations elderly to do, she is hardly likely to want a crew in to record her making a statement. I guess it's possible she could write a statement but it wouldn't have the same impact.

JudyCoolibar · 18/03/2020 12:34

I'm not sure how practical it would be, given that it means importing a load of potentially infectious people into the Palace.

Or maybe they could get Phil the Greek to film her on his smartphone?

NeckPainChairSearch · 18/03/2020 12:34

What NoemieNioche said.

I'm not sure how heartwarming the nation would find a few words from the world's most privileged woman as she sits, cosseted in one of her multi-million-pound homes, with every single need waited upon, as people scrap in Ada for a loo roll and tin and beans and worry if their loved ones will die because there are no hospital beds.

It would possibly be the most tone-deaf thing ever, frankly.

NotEnoughTime · 18/03/2020 12:34

Those who don’t care won’t care; those who do may find it comforting and reassuring, and yes it may help persuade some of our elders of the seriousness of the situation and encourage them to stay in etc

This is what I'm trying to say-thank you.

Yes, I do. She’s paid handsomely to be a figurehead.

Permanantlypuzzled · 18/03/2020 12:35

Harry and Meghan also the Andrew scandal long forgotten.
Why would the Queen want to put the spotlight back on her shower.
She will be stroking a corgi and smiling with relief.

“Every cloud, Philip , every cloud”.

TheMemoryLingers · 18/03/2020 12:36

Presumably her speech would be checked by the medics to ensure it didn’t have any conflicting advice.

I doubt she'd stray into advice, other than to say 'follow the latest government advice'. I could see a speech being focused on supporting one another, and acknowledging the work that is being done by NHS workers, and there would probably be a religious observation or analogy.

(For some reason I have started trying to compose a speech for her now!)

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 12:37

Prince Phillip is at Windsor according to a quick google. Went there before the queen.

Tbh, I'm not sure what she could say that wouldn't have half the country feeling patronised and complaining about it.

notangelinajolie · 18/03/2020 12:38

Hadn't given it much thought but I reckon the UK would sit up and take notice if she did. My stupid family still don't think any of this 14 day self isolation applies to them. They have all buggered of out knowing I have a high temperature.
And I think the over 70's would appreciate it coming from her rather than 3 men in suits standing on a podium.

Frownette · 18/03/2020 12:38

If something has happened to PP it's good she's got time to herself rather than other demands

Morgan12 · 18/03/2020 12:39

Yes of course she should be. Surely its part of her 'job'.

TheMemoryLingers · 18/03/2020 12:39

No, I don't see what relevance it would be to lots of people.

As mentioned before I am not a royalist. However, the Queen's speech at Christmas always pulls in huge viewing figures so I don't think it's fair to say a speech would be irrelevant. Obviously those who were not interested wouldn't tune in.

NotEnoughTime · 18/03/2020 12:40

Going by the mixed responses on this thread I guess she can't 'win' then-I just thought it might be a good thing to do.

Philip has been in Norfolk ever since his car accident. Moving him from a remote location with limited people coming and going to Windsor close to London with loads of people about would be a very bad idea and that’s if his health isn’t bad enough that just the move would be risky.

I ‘m fairly sure he is still alive though - if he wasn’t it would be all over the press to encourage the elderly to self isolate.

NanSlayer · 18/03/2020 12:41

No

She should just piss off and let the NHS take over the mansions

UYScuti · 18/03/2020 12:42

Seeing the queen in her royal surroundings while everyone else is suffering and doing without, probably be sitting on a throne made out of gold toilet rolls just to piss us all off

FATEdestiny · 18/03/2020 12:43

The Queen has expressed her condolences / concern for every disaster that has happened in any commonwealth country, without exception as far as I can remember.

It is very, very strange that she hasn't on this issue.

ILLBESUZIE · 18/03/2020 12:44

I don't care what the Queen and her over privileged family have to say.

KilburnOriginal · 18/03/2020 12:44

No

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 12:45

Yes. I hadn't thought of that.

I think she should. Maybe she will when we go into full lockdown

LaurieFairyCake · 18/03/2020 12:45

Philips at Sandringham (Norfolk)

Rocketmam · 18/03/2020 12:47

Mixed feelings about this.

Her job is to be a figurehead, so yes, she should.

On the other hand I can see it angering people who are facing their vulnerable and sick loved ones not even being able to get a vital hospital bed.

No one will be taking her off a ventilator to give a forty year old a fighting chance will they?

TheMemoryLingers · 18/03/2020 12:49

No, but her making a speech wouldn't change that.
