After being a customer for over 40 years I'm done with them. They messed up my Christmas order and now I can't even book an online slot for ever. I realise they are extra busy but I have an online order every week and even after staying up until after midnight hoping to get a slot for 3 weeks time there is still nothing. My dh and are both self isolating due to health reasons, we live in a rural village with limited bus services and no near family. Stuff you sainsburys.

Not all elderly people are vulnerable, sharp elbows, time to hang around waiting for deliveries. My DS says they are waiting in the cafe (until they shut it and moved staff to shelf filling) until the delivery arrives and then running and filling their trollies

Are the supermarkets going to ID people for age?

Some people are shopping for others. Do they count? Policing this will be a nightmare and those poor supermarket workers having to deal with people who think that for all sorts of reasons they need to first in the queue.

It’s a horrible, horrible time and when the supermarket workers start to self isolate it will get worse.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 18/03/2020 08:14

I totally get your sense of frustration, but it’s pretty much the same for everyone. I switch between Ocado and Morrison’s online and both were fully booked up until the 20something of March.
You may need to book the first available date you can and struggle by for a while as I’m not even sure you can register as a new customer with some online shops.
Try Amazon if you get desperate. They have an online supermarket. I think it’s Amazon Pantry.
Good luck op.

Saharafordessert · 18/03/2020 08:17

There are people in worse situations than yours.
These are times we have never experienced before, I’m sure Sainsbury’s aren’t trying to victimise you personally!

penisbeakers · 18/03/2020 08:19

Excellent, another coronatantrum.

Originalyellowbelly · 18/03/2020 08:20

Thanks Jingling, I can assure you I'm not stupid, frustrated maybe, like a lot of people, and yes I am over 70.

BaileysforBreakfast · 18/03/2020 08:20

Yes, it's frustrating, OP, but I'm surprised you can't see the bigger picture.

VegetableMunge · 18/03/2020 08:22

You should get priority because of your age and vulnerability OP. The rest of your argument is utterly ridiculous though.

user1988 · 18/03/2020 08:26

Of course they value their customers, but they just have too many trying to access the same service. They can't magic drivers and vans out of thin air, and some of those drivers will be self isolating over the coming weeks. I'm seriously inconvenienced but I understand why I can't get a delivery.

They sent an email to say they're prioritising the elderly and disabled for online shops as of next week. That does sound like they're looking after their most vulnerable customers to me.

Straycatstrut · 18/03/2020 08:32

I'm amazed I managed to get a Tesco one last Saturday for this Saturday. Me & Parents are sharing it for anything we can't get at the Supermarkets today. I still don't know what will arrive. Things keep becoming "unavailable" in my order.

I've seen brag pictures on FB of peoples food stashes in their Garages it's ridiculous they look like shops - and they keep adding to it. A mum at school yesterday said she spent all day looking for nappies. She had to drive a 25 mile round trip, then at each shop circling round for a parking space for ages, so took absolutely forever with a whingy 1 year old in a soaking nappy.

Eckhart · 18/03/2020 08:32

You can't be upset with a supermarket because it has a long queue! They didn't see this coming any more than most of us did.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit calmer. It's an enormously frustrating situation. Supermarkets are rationing now, so once they get restocked hopefully this won't continue. They're doing their best. Their boat is rocked too.

peanut76 · 18/03/2020 08:33

"Through our customer data we can identify which Groceries Online customers are elderly and / or vulnerable. We’re working with the Government and the retail industry to identify and support vulnerable customers who are not automatically identified through our online systems, as well as potentially reserving an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable shoppers, given current guidance is for these people to socially distance themselves."'

Well, that's creepy!! Shows how much information these companies (and the government!) have on us..can't believe it somehow ...unless the DWP is going to provide them with a list of addresses and names of those born before 1950 or who claim PIP and they'll cross check with their customer databases!

Marieo · 18/03/2020 08:35

Surely that is a massive data breach, but realistically they would have to do something like that. On the sign up for online shopping you don't give an age, so guessing it might be via nectar card (which not everyone has). If they don't have direct consent to access and share details on PIP etc then that's really bad.

Icecreamdiva · 18/03/2020 08:38

I’ve been a Tesco home delivery customer since the day it was introduced. They’ve just cancelled my delivery due today. I’m annoyed of course (especially as there was gin on the order) but these are extraordinary times and it would be foolish to expect normal service to apply.

Sparklingplasters · 18/03/2020 08:40

Make sure that your nectar card is registered your correct date of birth.

Sparklingplasters · 18/03/2020 08:43

Regards data, calm down, it’s not misuse of data, when you sign up to nectar you are agreeing to them having this data, it’s why they want your just your (registered) nectar card for foreign exchange purchases with no other ID.

BlusteryShowers · 18/03/2020 08:43

Have you spoken to the local shop that you mentioned to see if they will deliver to you?

It's unlikely that they will have everything you need of course but they might have enough to keep you going.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/03/2020 08:45

Our local pharmacy is delivering to their older customers and those who can’t get out.

Marieo · 18/03/2020 08:45

@Sparklingplasters it is if they are working with the government as has been said on twitter to identify those who are disabled. Agreed anything on your nectar card is fair game.

Friendsofmine · 18/03/2020 08:47

I'm glad you got something sorted OP. Stay well :)

Andorra155 · 18/03/2020 08:52

We are isolating as a family for 14 days and I can't get a slot until 2nd April. I do wish the slots could be saved for those self isolating and that people didn't book up more than one slot at a time... that's just greedy and no better than the stock hoarders.

CamillaBeauchamp · 18/03/2020 09:04

This is a real example of not seeing the bigger picture. The company is overwhelmed can't you see that?

nannybeach · 18/03/2020 09:06

A lot of people in he same boat. 10 days ago my DD (a Sainsbury manager) told me they were out of pasta, toilet roll, tins. She went shopping to Aldi, managed to get what she wanted, the first week, second week Aldi just as bad. My Tesco ran out of the same items, plus no salad or eggs. I went to my local big Sainsbury today really early, managed to get eggs, tin of pineapple, bread, apples, all the most expensive stuff. We are receiving notes thru the door from younger people offering help with shopping etc if you have to isolate, is there anything like that in your area?

peanut76 · 18/03/2020 09:07

@Sparklingplasters
I get it with the date of birth but how the hell would they know you are 'vulnerable' from your nectar card??!

SlothMama · 18/03/2020 09:13

You cannot blame Sainsbury's for this, they have a limited number of drivers and vehicles hence the lack of slots. They are doing what they can but they can't satisfy every customer, and I can guarantee every other supermarket are having the same problems.

If you don't have a car or bus can you ask a neighbour for a lift or get a taxi? I've taken one of my neighbours food shopping this week.
