After being a customer for over 40 years I'm done with them. They messed up my Christmas order and now I can't even book an online slot for ever. I realise they are extra busy but I have an online order every week and even after staying up until after midnight hoping to get a slot for 3 weeks time there is still nothing. My dh and are both self isolating due to health reasons, we live in a rural village with limited bus services and no near family. Stuff you sainsburys.

Tesco is the same. Thankfully I’ve managed to book slots for a few weeks.. I get my shopping delivered with them weekly anyway but I’ve never known it to be this bad getting a slot . In my area you have to book slots early around the Easter break anyway (touristy area) but this is extreme!!

I feel for you op. Have you tried other stores to deliver? I’m aware that they are probably booked up to. Is there anyone who can fetch some groceries? There are also so many people who are willing to help. Are you on Facebook? People like to help!

Also, maybe one of you could go fetch some groceries (if you can) early in the morning when it’s quiet and not many people around. Good hand hygiene, keeping away from people and not touching your face and you will probably be okay

Good luck.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 18/03/2020 06:40

MarshaBradyo, have they changed the process or something? I usually shop in advance, and can have multiple weeks booked at a time (obviously not at the moment though, with demand so high).

PlumsGalore · 18/03/2020 06:41

Sainsbury’s sent a sensible email at an insensible time this morning saying they are closing fish and pizza counters to make sure they get essential items into store as quickly as possible and that toilet roll and soap will be rationed to allow enough people to have some.

They are also opening an hour earlier tomorrow for all stores for the elderly.

Frangipanini · 18/03/2020 06:41

I think people need to stop booking slots and do click and collect if they can. Slots need to be for people isolated, not just for people who are a bit inconvenienced by popping to the shops.

pictish · 18/03/2020 06:44

I’m sorry I know this has been said already...but look around you - there is a pandemic sweeping the country, people are panicking and the supermarkets have been swamped...all of the supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s.
Your weekly slot holds no water in a deluge. Not Sainsbury’s doing...blame all the silly people who are desperate to stockpile even though there’s no need to.

You’re not ‘done’ with Sainsbury’s - you’ll be back when the dust settles.

Soontobe60 · 18/03/2020 06:46

Another suggestion, book a click and collect slot then if you don't drive, get a taxi or ask someone else to collect it. I booked a Tesco one on Monday for next Tuesday, they had no delivery slots available though.

You're actually very lucky in that you are one of the few over 70s that can use the internet and fathom out online shopping. My dm, and many of her peers in their 80s, dont have the Internet so are relying on the good old BBC to keep them updated. She's been taking a taxi every day this week to the local shops to try and get basics because she's terrified she will run out once she's properly isolated from the weekend. I can't help at the moment because I've just had a knee op and can't walk, let alone drive. My dsis can't help because she's a frontline nurse and can't risk visiting with possible Covid, plus lives 50 miles away. My DB can't help because his Dw has MS and is currently suffering a set back. They are both self isolating due to her being at very high risk. He's self employed so isn't earning.
Everyone has a story. Everyone needs food and loo roll and bloody pasta! This whole situation has hit us like a brick, so sudden, so brutal. Let's try to look for solutions that work for everyone rather than criticising businesses who are doing their best.

Danetobe · 18/03/2020 06:47

Yeah frangipanni that would be very good if poeple who can to go and collect not get it delivered. The whole of Denmark is self isolating now and we are not seeing any evidence of panic buying. A few shops have placed their soap and hand sanitizer at the front of the shop to entice people, but even so there is penty left. It seems the British public have no faith in their leadership and I don't blame them 💐

LizzieMacQueen · 18/03/2020 06:52

Sainsburys are introducing click and collect too in some places. Think their email was quite good actually, early opening for elderly and vulnerable customers, limit to 3 on any fresh produce.

Think if you have a blue badge, that'll be the criteria for qualifying as vulnerable.

Cherryberrypie · 18/03/2020 06:52

Maybe you should consider moving. Living rural with no car and a poor bus service when both parties are poorly is not a great idea.

I live rural too with no bus service at all, but we are a family of three and we have a car each. If any of our cars break down we still have two others to rely on. Without this we would not be living where we do. Can not even imagine living here with no transport.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 18/03/2020 06:57

Ocado aren’t taking any new customers so I’m wondering if others will do that too. I’m pleased I signed up for reserving my slot with Ocado very week before all this kicked off. Guaranteed my slot every week now. No substitutes or missing items in the shop Coming today either. Must’ve stocked up

rwalker · 18/03/2020 06:58

It's quite simple they only have so many vans/divers and demand is through the roof.

MsTSwift · 18/03/2020 07:00

I think if you can do your own shop or have a neighbour to help you should free up the home delivery for those who genuinely need them

Casino218 · 18/03/2020 07:02

Ffs we are in the middle of a global pandemic. Wake up. NHS staff battling to look after increasing number of ill people, daughters unable to go and say goodbye to their dying fathers on covid wards and you are in a jump that you can't get your delivery slot!

MsTSwift · 18/03/2020 07:02

If you are not in good health generally living rurally with no car between you is an odd decision. Grew up in a village a car’s essential

2fingers22018 · 18/03/2020 07:09

I always find sainsburys staff rude. When i complained about one particular man who was quite frankly aggressive to my dad when he politely asked him where the low alcohol cider was, their response was shocking hopefully this wont happen again it said in the email..hopefully? If id spoken to a customer in this way at my work id have been given an official warning and made to retrainConfused

2fingers22018 · 18/03/2020 07:11

My point is i dont want to give sainsburys my money either tbh is there not an amazon delivery in your area? Theyr usually really gd

frumpety · 18/03/2020 07:14

If you live in a village there may be a Face book page and someone might be able to grab some shopping for you.
With click and collect do you need to pay on collection or can you pay online and get someone else to collect for you ? So OP could send a taxi or a helpful neighbour ?

petrocellihouse · 18/03/2020 07:15

Lots and lots of communities are now coming together and using the power of social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) to help people who are in situations just like the one you are in. If you have not already done so, create an account and see what is happening. I think you will be surprised at the amount of help available locally from groups who have got together and decided they want to do something to help.

dottiedodah · 18/03/2020 07:23

Sainsburys are just trying to deal with huge numbers of people all trying to book a slot! Just the same with Tesco .Asda and so on I should think! If you live rurally without transport ,you are in a vulnerable position anyway surely ? What if the weather is bad or you need medical help .Maybe best to think about moving closer to town?

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 07:24

Sainsburys sent an email last night saying they are expanding their click and collect service. They say they believe this will work for customers who are self isolating. Which I think is good. Sounded like they’re going to include more locations.....not sure how or where.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 18/03/2020 07:28

I was stressed after 10mins in sainsburys with the amount of people god knows how the people who work their feel. Don't be angry with sainburys be angry with the lazy greedy bastards who are panic buying.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/03/2020 07:31

I've had an e-mail from Director Mike Coupe (Penned by his own fair hand, no doubt).

They are restricting more items to lower maximise, AND are making some times available for older shoppers only. There are some other bits, but I can't remember them.

Unfortunately, much as I am also disillusioned with Sainsbo's (for other reasons), I don't think this is their fault - it's greedy panic-buying/ e-bay selling bastards which has caused this.

Slots fill up as they are booked, and more people are being forced to book for the same reasons as you - self-isolation.

Maisiecow · 18/03/2020 07:32

My husband is a manager in home delivery for one of the major supermarkets. Yesterday literally half the pickers and drivers were off self isolating. So, there were a lot of customers who didn’t get their shopping deliveries. I understand you are frustrated, worried etc., but I promise you this is not happening because retailers have decided now would be a good time to give their poorest performance! DH will working 12-14 hour shifts 7 days this week. The situation is crap. When people are dying in hospitals they are not blaming the staff, instead they know Covid19 is the enemy. Please understand that what is happening in supermarkets is NOT down to their incompetence. I do feel the government need to intervene so that the vulnerable could be prioritised. Also, they should stop timed delivery slots. The people that are self isolating don’t need them (they just need to get their provisions). These would allow for twice as many deliveries.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 07:33

I woke up at 2am this morning and managed to get an Ocado slot for April 5th. They have hiked their delivery charge to £6.99 across the board!

DowntownAbby · 18/03/2020 07:33

@2fingers22018

I always find sainsburys staff rude.

They employ 186,900 people.
