After being a customer for over 40 years I'm done with them. They messed up my Christmas order and now I can't even book an online slot for ever. I realise they are extra busy but I have an online order every week and even after staying up until after midnight hoping to get a slot for 3 weeks time there is still nothing. My dh and are both self isolating due to health reasons, we live in a rural village with limited bus services and no near family. Stuff you sainsburys.

I get you OP. There's a serious lack of compassion on this thread. No car, elderly and poor health? Definitely deserve a slot. After all this I think online shopping should be reorganised so that those in need get priority. I have booked slots ahead until mid-April as I saw this coming. Expect to lose this at some point. This is no different to people "prepping" over weeks. I would gladly give my slot up for a person who has no other option but to have a delivery BUT if I cancel my slots some other person gets it, probably in same boat as me. I have claustrophobia and health anxiety so feel justified.

Join a local Facebook page , all the ones I see have a lot of volunteers x

It’s not Sainsbury’s fault OP , you know that right ? Their staff have the same issues as you

UntamedWisteria · 18/03/2020 07:37

I heard on the news this morning that online supermarkets will now be giving some priority to elderly customers.

UntamedWisteria · 18/03/2020 07:38

Here you go OP, hope this will help: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51941987

2fingers22018 Your experience of Sainsbury’s staff is so different to mine, I have an express Sainsbury’s near me and the staff are always friendly, polite and helpful. What a disgrace that they spoke to your father like that.
CyberNan I laughed out loud at your post even though it wasn’t really meant to be funny, but it did ring true with me also! Families huh? 😤

Sainsburys are replying to people on Twitter asking how they'll know people are disabled/over 70 etc...

"Through our customer data we can identify which Groceries Online customers are elderly and / or vulnerable. We’re working with the Government and the retail industry to identify and support vulnerable customers who are not automatically identified through our online systems, as well as potentially reserving an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable shoppers, given current guidance is for these people to socially distance themselves."

Problem with using a blue badge as proof is:
1: how do they know? They have not said anyway of doing so ..and they no longer accept emails (I tried) and can't get through on phone.

  1. Not all disabled people have blue badges ....a lot can't drive or afford a car. I am disabled and in the vulnerable lists but do not have a blue badge. I do have proof of PIP though ...but again Sainsburys do not know this automatically!

It sounds to me like something they have just said because it sounds good, as surely they would have put some way to let them know either your age or status?

PhilCornwall1 · 18/03/2020 07:45

I cant believe all slots are booked in advance

We've booked slots for Tesco for the next month, so chances are people have done that as I'd have thought most supermarkets systems are broadly the same.

Irial · 18/03/2020 07:45

@Originalyellowbelly

I cant believe all slots are booked in advance when they only become available at midnight and I tried at one minute past

You and the rest of the country.... Hmm

Maisiecow · 18/03/2020 07:45

Oh, and of course DH and his coworkers are Currently being subjected to a horrendous amount of abuse from the public because shelves are clearing as soon as they’re restocked, or they’re not getting their shopping Delivered etc. People seem to think this is okay!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/03/2020 07:47

Extraordinary times. Do you have any neighbours that can help? Can you put an appeal on a Facebook group or that Next Door app, the green one..lve seen several people offering to get things for elderly or isolated neighbours.

NervousInYorkshire · 18/03/2020 07:48

Sorry, forgot to link- they're putting the in their individual replies, rather than a tweet they've initiated.

Do you watch the news at all OP?!?

ruddydogg · 18/03/2020 07:54

Whereabouts are you, OP? Perhaps someone on here could help.

Marieo · 18/03/2020 07:55

They have sent an email out now. I do agree that the elderly and vulnerable should be prioritised, there is no way for them to identify those who are aside from age though. Many people benefit from deliveries because they have zero support and also cannot get to a large supermarket for a plethora of reasons and end up having to pay inflated prices at local shops (if they can even get there), more often than not when they have hardly any money themselves. A lot of the elderly do have people who are willing to help, either family or one of the many support groups being set up, which is, of course, amazing. But let's not forget those with other things going on that make them physically or mentally unable to go shopping, of which these slots were a lifeline.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/03/2020 07:57

From an email from Sainsbury’s I got this morning:

A number of you suggested that we reserve an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable customers. In response to this request, we will set aside the first hour in every supermarket this Thursday 19th March, for elderly and vulnerable customers. I hope that you can respect this decision and will work with us as we try our best to help those that need it the most. If you or an elderly family member, friend or neighbour would like to shop during this hour, please check online for your local supermarket opening hours.
We will also help elderly and vulnerable customers access food online. From Monday 23rd March, our online customers who are over 70 years of age or have a disability will have priority access to online delivery slots. We will contact these customers in the coming days with more details.
For any online customer who can travel to our stores, from Monday 23rd March, we will operate an expanded 'click and collect' service. We are significantly increasing the number of collection sites across the country over the coming days in preparation for this. Customers can place their order online as usual and pick it up from a collection point in the store car park. We believe this will also work for people who are self-isolating.

Morgan12 · 18/03/2020 07:58

That's absolutely shocking.
They should have kept a special reserved slot just for you.
I'm sure they are just kicking themselves now.

Marieo · 18/03/2020 07:59

How are they going to identify those who have a disability?

sHREDDIES19 · 18/03/2020 08:00

I’m actually dumbfounded at the selfishness of so many people who aren’t old or with underlying health conditions. Why the heck are they stockpiling, I just do not get it. Supermarkets will remain open and even if numbers have to be controlled so be it, there really isn’t any need to bulk buy and leave others short. Family of four here and even now I’m still doing my normal shops as advised!!! To be honest I’ll be glad of a visit to a shop to pick up some food when the lockdown really takes hold. All I can assume is it’s a combination of fear but mainly selfishness.

Femail · 18/03/2020 08:00

Entitlement at it's best here. I doubt sainsburys will miss you Grin

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/03/2020 08:06

Do you want them to reserve you a slot every week on the offchance that you may need it? How would they know what day/time to reserve?

I’ve had the same slot with Ocado reserved for the last ten years.

HoffiCoffi13 · 18/03/2020 08:10

But really, what are you expecting Sainsbury’s to do? They have a number of delivery slots available, people book them, and they’re gone. They can’t withhold them for ‘loyal’ customers, how would they determine who is entitled to one?
I’ve just managed to book a Tesco slot for next Tuesday. We’re self isolating for 14 days and nearly out of nappies as I couldn’t get any last week... going to have to put a shout out on Facebook I think!

cherrylovex3 · 18/03/2020 08:10

online shopping atm is quite risky anyway as they pick stuff from the shelves. chances of most of your shopping even being there is unlikely. what happens when we have a country full of mindless morons who are stock piling but still going out

Originalyellowbelly · 18/03/2020 08:10

Thank you all, I have now got a kind local lady picking up a few bits for me if there is anything left in the shop. I do keep a good supply of tins, frozen food and cleaning stuff as do most people who live in rural communities but I rely on online shopping for fresh goods.

When we moved here we were both fit and well then my DH got diabetes which affected his eyesight and his ability to drive, I was in a car accident which left me unable to drive, we are looking to move but houses are very slow to sell here.

I know I am luckier than most as I don't have babies or small children to worry about but you know, life doesn't always turn out as we hoped or expect but there is usually a way to handle what life throws at us.

Thank you once again for all your help and suggestions Smile
