I'm just wondering because we have social media etc etc these days and as yet, I haven't seen any just regular people with the virus who can tell us exactly what it's like? I'm amazed there hasn't been hundreds of accounts

They closed down a mosque closed to me after an elderly man who used to go there died of it. They only tested last minute as he was very poorly when admitted and then died very quick even before the test results came back.

Nursing83 · 18/03/2020 09:46

I might have it not sure though
so why bother putting it on social media to panic my friends and family when it could just be a bad cold/cough

ffswhatnext · 18/03/2020 12:51

Maybe people aren’t posting it on sm because they don’t share every single detail of their lives.

Many people were surprised last year that I had spent long periods in hospital, as nothing was mentioned online. Why would I so I can get loads of oh hun thinking of you? Not going to help. Nor is the endless you ok daily questions.

People have the choice if they want to talk to the media and not everyone wants that attention. Whole the hell wants the whole world knowing your medical business?

And yes I do know someone in hospital and it’s killing me because of my own health I cannot go and visit. Now I just get updates from family, because the person is a bit occupied. The last thing on my mind is why isn’t he posting on sm. It’s will I ever see him again. Those on his sm who know him are getting in touch behind the scenes.

Wetfloortiles · 18/03/2020 13:21

To those being grumpy with us for wondering, I genuinely really dislike social media and I don't even have it but my husband does for his business.

I find it very odd because so many people share everything from their dinner, to checking in at a hospital appointment. Going by that pattern, I am amazed it's not all over the place.

I do wonder, as someone said, if there is an element of 'shame' to share they have it, because of the terror it's bringing people.

I also am slight suspicious, rightly or wrongly, and feel that there is something we are not being told.

@smallgreyelephant
Yes, that's what I'd like to know too (about once you've had it, can you get back out)

Buccanarab · 18/03/2020 13:31

*The estimate is 1,000 infections for every death (this was given in the parliamentary committee hearing this morning). So 70,000 cases out there, somewhere.

The worst case scenario is that 80% of the population get it and that means 50 million and 500,000 deaths.*

If you take the figues in the above two posts, which were posted on this thread and I've seen similar statements elsewhere, you end up with 500,000,000 infected, which clearly isn't possible.

There's so much misleading information out there it's no wonder we don't have a clue what's really going on.

leckford · 18/03/2020 13:35

Ir’s worst in London, I have just read. No surprise huge numbers of humans, people from everywhere, buses, tube, etc

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/03/2020 14:10

Maybe people aren’t posting it on sm because they don’t share every single detail of their lives.

They do though, normally. From cancer blogs to unboxing videos to eating different types of food.
Many people tested positive have mild symptoms.
I did find this one article of a diary of a confirmed case:
www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/diary-dad-coronavirus-day-day-17929614?fbclid=IwAR3pEyDg6EBMk4ruxWgMdySuFTQaZ0yr1iFLxwbLsItNc8KwJBRHjDdO1Ic
You'd think there'd be more of them though.

Wetfloortiles · 18/03/2020 14:23

@deydododatdodontdeydo
Exactly. People share how many farts they've done in a day...

OP posts:
ffswhatnext · 18/03/2020 17:04

Yes some people do share everything from their farts to what they are eating. I don’t have too many of those on sm.

Plus even if they are well, but still need to be in hospital, love to over share. There’s no saying they can get reception. I’ve stayed in some where there is no reception and I cannot go for a wander to find reception.

Plus who really wants to share? - I’m in hospital, currently hooked up to various machines. On a ventilator. Feel and look like I’m dying.

And a lot of people are aware people are in hospital fighting for their lives, and in the grand scheme of things, aren’t so self involved anymore.

The only reason I talk so openly about my health and the issues, is because it’s all anonymous. I can be extremely selfish and self involved, lack tact and all that. But even I have enough common sense to know this is not the time for this.

OutingMyself · 18/03/2020 17:09

A family member of an acquaintance who is vulnerable was taken to hospital to the CV pod and told they probably had CV, but weren't tested. They were sent home because they were only keeping people in whose lips were blue. Still very ill at home.

If they aren't testing this person then they are definitely not testing people with very minor symptoms. I've seen lots of people posting about coughs etc, but who knows what they've got?!

ffswhatnext · 18/03/2020 17:11

The only things I’m seeing from hospital staff is them begging for social isolation. A lot aren’t plastering details of what is going on in the hospital. Surely that should also be seen as a bit odd. And the ones who are, social isolation because people are dying and vital equipment is running low.

nearlyrev · 18/03/2020 18:00

I'm pretty sure I had it - and a bad case of it at that, just after Christmas.

Terrible chest pain - burning. Felt like my chest was on fire. I couldn't breathe properly, I was propped up on 5 pillows every night just to breathe. The WORST cough of my life which (TMI - made me pee due to how violent it was - also made me projectile vomit). Got to the point I was bleeding from my throat from the excessive coughing and vomiting it too :( . I could barely walk to the toilet let alone anywhere else. I was constantly trying to 'catch' my breath - I simply couldn't breathe properly for days and days. Aches and pains everywhere. I remember calling my mum and saying I think I might actually die because this is like nothing I've ever experienced before (and I have had the 'proper' flu before). Then after 3 days I began to feel a little better until a day or two after when it hit me again but 50% worse. Took about 3 weeks in total to get back to 'me'. Still have a residual cough even now months later.

My Gran thinks she had it too, she has had cancers, almost died twice and has had many operations yet she had what I had just before Christmas and said in her 76 years she's NEVER felt like that in her life.

Eesha · 18/03/2020 18:04

@nearlyrev thats so frightening to read. My friends who think they have it say it wasn't terrible, very bad cough/sore throat and temp but manageable.

Eesha · 18/03/2020 18:07

@ffswhatnext i know a few frontline doctors who say they are managing it but all agree to stay away from the elderly.

nearlyrev · 18/03/2020 18:51

@Eesha some people seem to just get a mild case luckily!

Cornettoninja · 18/03/2020 20:10

Exactly. People share how many farts they've done in a day...

Thing is, apart from factoring in how ill the confirmed cases must be (to be confirmed in the first place) you have to consider the age groups most likely to be making up the bulk of those people. It’s not the blogging generation.

I don’t know of many people over the age of 30 with an instagram account unless they use it for business for example.

lljkk · 18/03/2020 21:09

There are plans to test for antibodies, try to figure out how many people have immunity even if they didn't get tested while actively ill.

ffswhatnext · 18/03/2020 21:50

A 22 year old has just popped up on my Twitter. He’s posting about his experience, to tell people this thing doesn’t care.

Of course the days leading up to this he was out and about. He went to his gp twice once he started to think something not right. The second visit he managed to get a test arranged. He didn’t know if he had it or not, he sensibly stayed in.

5 days later. He got the results. Positive.

People cannot win. People on Twitter are questioning his claims. If he’s legit.

I’m at the early stages, day one and the lead up. I should have gone out tomorrow. I know it’s too late for those I may have been in contact with. Doesn’t mean I, nor anyone in my home have to risk someone else’s live tomorrow.

SugarSugarShimmy · 18/03/2020 21:55

I believe I’ve had it and have been on at least 2 threads here of people who also thought they had it. I couldn’t go to a newspaper as they’re not confirming. Even if they were why on Earth would I want to go to a newspaper?!

Justaboy · 18/03/2020 22:18

she had what I had just before Christmas and said in her 76 years she's NEVER felt like that in her life.

Makes me wonder if these cases might be two things on the go together that can happen!..

VashtaNerada · 19/03/2020 06:16

Pretty sure I have it now. Symptoms have been completely manageable so far, I’m just very tired and achey with a cough, headache and slight chest pain. Hopefully I’m past the worst of it now. I know quite a few Londoners who’ve had it - my friends outside London seem more surprised by it all!

Greenpop21 · 19/03/2020 07:00

It wasn’t here in December though was it? Having said that, we were all ill with cough and fever Dec/Jan. Be interesting to find that was it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2020 07:06

No it wasn't here in December, no amount of conspiracy theory changed that.

There are lots of bugs around every year, the point is that this one behaves differently and had it been here in December, Drs in countries in Europe would have discovered this before China. There would be lots of deaths from respiratory issues and people would have had tests to identify the cause.

Blink102 · 19/03/2020 07:32

Think we might have it. In self-isolation already.
