Where are all the people with Coronavirus?

I'm just wondering because we have social media etc etc these days and as yet, I haven't seen any just regular people with the virus who can tell us exactly what it's like? I'm amazed there hasn't been hundreds of accounts

OP posts:
Pipandmum · 17/03/2020 22:58

I've seen several on the news feeds. Frankly if I had had it (and knew it was corona) the last thing I'd want to do is go on any news to talk about it. I'd put it on FB maybe but my settings are private as who the hell else would care?

SallySun123 · 17/03/2020 22:58

There's quite a stigma round our way with being a 'confirmed case'.

Agree, I’m not shouting from the rooftops that I have it and neither is my mum. People are scared, it’s not surprising those that have tested positive want to lie low.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/03/2020 22:59

Can I just re-post this, which was mentioned on a different thread:

Headline news in July 2009
Swine flu could kill 65,000 in UK, warns chief medical officer
In fact it was 457

SeraphinaDombegh · 17/03/2020 23:04

Friends of mine have it - 3 out of 4 in family. It's textbook, awful cough/fever/weakness but nothing else really. Two are feeling pretty rough, one is really struggling for breath. They're all normally fit and healthy.

ChristmasCarcass · 17/03/2020 23:10

Half of my department are off with a cough/temp. We have five patients on our ward who have tested positive, so I imagine my colleagues may well have it.

So far, they all seem pretty well with "minor cold" level symptoms. Obviously the patients aren't faring quite so well, but renal patients don't have great life expectancies at the best of times.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 17/03/2020 23:10

It does seem odd in this day and age. There are all kinds of terminal cancer blogs on youtube, twitter, etc.
You'd think there'd be at least a few (confirmed) bloggers. Not just someone who is really ill but hasn't been tested (not even seen any of those either(.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 23:12

Ahhh, so there are thousands of confirmed cases, but hardly anyone wants to talk about it. The celebs are all talking about having it. Smells fishy.

LarkDescending · 17/03/2020 23:15

I am one of them - unsurprisingly I am in bed with a high fever and chills. Wrapped in multiple layers, blankets and still feeling chilled to the bone. Splitting headache. Cough is persistent but not painful.

Zero appetite.

I am not sure why you expect ill people to be all over SM.

RantyAnty · 17/03/2020 23:16

My friend is recovering from it. They wouldn't test her.
She spent a day in hospital and was sent home with meds and told to stay in for 14 days.

She said her throat felt like it was on fire like worst she ever had. also coughing and fever.

She's in her 60s

Supersimkin2 · 17/03/2020 23:18

Most of the cases are mild, and the shutdown means fewer of them.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 23:19

Maybe some people who think they have it just have normal flu. I had flu a few years ago, brought on by stress (or so my doctor told me) and the symptoms were exactly the same as coronavirus.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 17/03/2020 23:20

@DoubleAction said:

”Even if the deaths get to 20000, as predicted this evening, most of us won't personally know one of those poor people, just as we don't always know one of the 8000 who die from flu every year.

Although, something doesn't add up. If there will be "only" an extra 12000 deaths to what we'd normally expect, I don't think we'd be closing everything down.”

We will still have the usual 8k flu deaths as well. But the key thing is that the government is hoping (hoping) to keep the deaths to under 20000 if we stick strictly to all the measures put in place . Any greater social interaction than the current advice dictates, and the numbers infected and the number of concomitant deaths will increase exponentially.

DuchessMinnie · 17/03/2020 23:21

I might have it but I will probably never find out for sure so I could tell you what it's like for me but it could be just a cold. If it wasn't for CV being around I would have gone to work with a pack of lemsips today.

BuyingaHome · 17/03/2020 23:22

My husband has a fever of 38.7 and a cough!!!!! Corona?? Who knows!!!!

BertieBotts · 17/03/2020 23:24

I know three people who have it. But I am not in the UK, they are testing here.

One was in contact with a confirmed case, was symptomless, but tested anyway on medical advice. Positive. One was in contact with an area (as in a small confined space, not geographical) known to have cases, had symptoms, was told by doctor there is no point testing as we need the tests for people who are symptomless, you've been in likely contact and have matching symptoms so we consider you positive. The third has been tested and we are waiting to hear.

Not much for them to say tbh - just repeating the same symptom lists isn't especially helpful or interesting.

Abc1955 · 17/03/2020 23:30

My neighbour and partner are self isolating, he has a sore throat with ulcers, he works in a high risk area, I am just getting over what I believe to be C19, my symptoms are sore throat, headache and slight tiredness, I am a fit and healthy 65 year old so I have not been too bad. As has been stated previously, only hospitalised people are tested. I live in a small village in Scotland and have not been abroad since December, Tenerife.

This is more prevalent that you think and not everyone will be seriously ill.

NanaRant · 17/03/2020 23:32

I have name changed for this. Apart from close friends and family, no one knows we have it.
My 19 year old DS, my DH and I have it in our household and my DD has awful flu-like symptoms and her DH has a sore throat today. We were at a family gathering on Sunday and my DS unwittingly passed it on. 4 other people that attended are now self-isolating due to symptoms, 2 have coughs (1 has severe asthma).
I would point out that it seems to have spread very quickly. In our case (my household) has mild/moderate classic symptoms. My DD is not at all well and I am worried about her, but can't get to her. My son-in-law has type one diabetes and they live with FIL 86 and one year old baby.

Jeaniealogy · 17/03/2020 23:37

I am convinced I had it at the end of January/beginning of Feb. Dog rough, horrendous cough, fever, asthma exacerbated as a result. I was in bed for 2 days but felt ok after a week. If it wasnt CV it was pretty close

mindproject · 17/03/2020 23:39

NanaRant - sorry you are suffering. Hope you all get well soon. Have you been tested for it?

Allsizes8to14 · 17/03/2020 23:40

I might be one. I might not! I have all the symptoms on the WHO list for COVID19 except no fever? So I really dont know if I have a mild case, or a cold. In UK so no testing except in hospital. Felt really under the weather for first 48hrs, weak, achy, headache and sore throat that has all now gone but have persistent dry cough. Am self isolating, but will be frustrated if this is a cold and have to do this all again if/when actually get it! (No sick pay) The lack of testing is a real issue as if I was confirmed negative I would have gone to work with a pack of cough sweets but as it stands can’t risk anything so am isolating

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2020 23:40

I suppose you don't really feel like posting when you have it.

There have been some accounts on here though.

SallyLovesCheese · 17/03/2020 23:41

I could have it but it's quite mild if I do. Shortness of breath and a dry cough, with some aching in my neck/shoulders. Normally, I'd be buying some Beecham's All-in-one and expecting to feel rough for a few days, but ultimately carrying on. As it is, I feel otherwise okay but am having to stay in as per guidance. It's frustrating, not knowing. If this isn't the virus then I might have to self-isolate again in the near future!

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/03/2020 23:44

I almost definitely have it. I sit a few desks away from a confirmed case (went to hospital with complications). I had a fever on and off, I have a dry cough, tight chest and am tired. I actually started with a migraine but i think that was just co-incidence as it's not a reported symptom. Started pretty much Saturday and I'm not well but not too ill either, not needed to take anything drug wise and will probably start working from home tomorrow, at least part of the day. I'm stuck in until the weekend and DH and adult DS1 have 14 days isolation. DS2 is staying away at Uni until our isolation is finished but hopefully we aren't in a lockdown situation by then. I'm in my 50s but in decent general health with no underlying conditions.

CochonDinde · 17/03/2020 23:47

The majority of people who have been tested have been hospitalised, this is in line with Govt advice? People don't just instinctively know whether or not they have it, helpful as that would be..

MigginsMrs · 17/03/2020 23:47

Although, something doesn't add up. If there will be "only" an extra 12000 deaths to what we'd normally expect, I don't think we'd be closing everything down.

It’s the closing down that will hopefully lead to the “only” 20000 deaths. Without the measures it will be much more.
