Where are all the people with Coronavirus?

I'm just wondering because we have social media etc etc these days and as yet, I haven't seen any just regular people with the virus who can tell us exactly what it's like? I'm amazed there hasn't been hundreds of accounts

OP posts:

The sarcastic replies about not being well enough to receive reporters are not necessary . I’m talking about the very first cases that recovered.

poppymatilda · 17/03/2020 22:15

I'm ill. Flu like symptoms, sort of matching the coronavirus symptoms but much more mild cough than I'd expected. I've felt basically ropey but no worse than the time I had seasonal flu.
I reckon I probably have it. Stayed at home since Saturday with DH and DD. I'm bored and feel guilty for DH having to bear the brunt of entertaining a toddler who is bouncing off the walls!

Greenpop21 · 17/03/2020 22:15

The very early cases were tested regardless of severity. The ones that were contact traced too.

BigTikes · 17/03/2020 22:15

if we don't close things down it would be many, many, many more deaths. That's the point.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 17/03/2020 22:15

My freind has ot shes early 30's with a damaged lung, havent tested her just given antibiotics, her nan passed today unsure if she had it.

Another freind, her inlaws have it

LindaSmithfanclub · 17/03/2020 22:17

My son's friend has it confirmed (early 20s). He came home from college in London last week and now the whole family are quarantined. It seems that he contracted it from one of his housemates who has also been diagnosed. My friend says he's no so ill he's stopped played video games.

A local primary school has announced that the father of one of the pupils has been diagnosed with it after skiing in northern Italy. It seems to be official.

Derbygerbil · 17/03/2020 22:19

Although, something doesn't add up. If there will be "only" an extra 12000 deaths to what we'd normally expect, I don't think we'd be closing everything down.

But it’s only 12000 extra deaths because we’re shutting everything down! The modelling estimated that they’d be 250,000 deaths if the Government simply tried to delay it’s progress, and 800,000 if we simply carried on as normal as we would do in a normal flu season (which by the way would be almost as many deaths by August as we lost in the entire 4 years of the 1st World War!)

MajesticWhine · 17/03/2020 22:19

@DoubleAction 20,000 deaths is what we get if we lock down and take all precautions. If we don't then it would be 250,000.

MajesticWhine · 17/03/2020 22:20

cross post with Derbygerbil

DoubleAction · 17/03/2020 22:22

Yes, I realised that after I pressed send!

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 22:28

Leo Varadkar just said they anticipate 15,000 cases in Ireland by the end of the month. So probably times that by about ten for the UK.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 22:29

Probably more than ten given that the UK still hasn’t shut school, pubs etc. Could be half a million.

Chloemol · 17/03/2020 22:30

If you look on the gov.uk website there is a page telling you by health authority where these people are. However as testing is now only done for those in hospital it’s hardly likely their first thought is going to be let’s go on social media and update everyone.

There are some posts out there now from people who have had mild symptoms and remained at home

WomanIsTaken · 17/03/2020 22:39

Lots of anecdotal accounts stating people are sure they have it / have had it, but are unconfirmed. I can't decide whether these are useful or not, in terms of portraying a reliable picture of the 'corona experience', as so many people are I'll with one thing or another at this time of the year.

SallySun123 · 17/03/2020 22:41

My mum has it (early 60s). Most of the people tested are those who’ve presented to hospital and are probably too poorly and traumatised to be interviewed. She’s home now and is recovering but still in bed. We saw her 3 times in the week she was ill and contagious so are now isolating. I’m sure we have it (if we don’t then it’s not contagious at all!) but no symptoms other than a slight cold. Until they develop a test to see who’s had it and become immune (not just who’s got it now), then we won’t know the range of experiences of what it’s like to get it and recover from it.

Tarttlet · 17/03/2020 22:42

There have been quite a lot of interviews with people who have had it - see, for example:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-51876080

Fortunately, he didn't get many symptoms. There are some studies now that are suggesting that a high proportion of COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic (or very mild) but that the virus can still be transmitted in that state, which is scary (but also reassuring in some ways) e.g. www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2020/03/coronavirus-new-graph-shows-people-in-their-20s-are-more-asymptomatic-and-not-being-tested-for-covid-19.html

Justaboy · 17/03/2020 22:45

Its very likley that several here have had it as yes it can be quite mild for some, BUT unless they test for it how are they and you going to know you have and as a consequnce are now the proud possessor of some immunity to it?.

Perhaops its on BoJo's list of things to do 'ere long!

DogInATent · 17/03/2020 22:46

Most of them don't know they've got it. Those that have tested positive are a very small percentage.

The estimate is 1,000 infections for every death (this was given in the parliamentary committee hearing this morning). So 70,000 cases out there, somewhere.

Moneymad27 · 17/03/2020 22:47

The 20,000 is a “they would be a great result figure”

The worst case scenario is that 80% of the population get it and that means 50 million and 500,000 deaths.

Hopefully it’s the former

Jezebel101 · 17/03/2020 22:49

There's a huge amount of people who are sure they have it, but people in Ireland sure enough they have it to get tested are testing negative about 85% of the time. It's easy to get paranoid about every cough and ache.

However, just because it's probably some seasonal bug doesn't mean it's okay to risk spreading it, just in case.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 22:50

I don't know anyone that knows anyone that has it. The only time I hear someone has actually got it, it's a celeb - and we all know how honest and trustworthy they are.

I think many of the people who think they might have it now are actually people suffering the effects of stress. When I got flu last time, my doctor told me stress had caused it.

doneaflit · 17/03/2020 22:51

I know a few who've tested positive (and only 1 in hospital). Some are posting on their private Facebook pages. Some are keeping their head down. There's quite a stigma round our way with being a 'confirmed case'.

dkl55 · 17/03/2020 22:54

There was a big interview in the times this weekend with the health minister, nadine dories, who has/had it. She was quite unwell but not hospitalised. She did give it to her 87 year old mum who was so unaffected she was looking after her daughter and vacuuming, apparently.

Popuppippa · 17/03/2020 22:56

There are two types of test required; one to test active virus in patients who have an 'active' infection and another to test for antibodies in those who have had the infection. They have the first and are working very hard to develop the second.

There was a very interesting segment by Sir Patrick Vallance on this in today's Common's select committee.

Idreamofsummerdays · 17/03/2020 22:57

They are walking among us and that is the problem. Most people are not taking this seriously and will not do so until the deaths are in their thousands and then it is too late.
