Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

funny's not fingers!

randomsabreuse · 17/03/2020 21:16

DH's job should be ok. Clinical veterinary + teaching clinical veterinary. Even if the teaching is on hold they need all the clinicians they can get to cover absences!

I am currently job hunting as I'm just about to finish my PhD (in epidemiology at least) and my funding will end in May, I'm very concerned about getting a first postdoc as a career in academia seemed impossible even before the coronavirus situation developed.

Curious as to how other early career researchers are feeling?

I'm NHS without children so will hopefully manage to ride this without taking time off. I feel about as secure as I could be. I moan a bit but I'm very grateful to work for the NHS. DH's job is secure as he works in a shortage area of IT.

I'd say healthcare and funeral directors are a dead cert for job security.

Marmaladesandwiches27 · 17/03/2020 21:21

Biomedical scientist, infectious diseases lab, NHS. Think I'll be OK! Really feeling for those who are concerned right now though. Hopefully the claims of grants from the government to keep people afloat will come to fruition.

givinguphopenow · 17/03/2020 21:22

Those who can rely on a wage coming in, please help those who can't.

We're in hospitality. We are about to lose our business, livelihood and therefore our house. Additionally I have a lung issue which means if I get this awful disease I may well lose my life. I'm numb, can't even cry. We are busy applying for every bit of government help we can get, but I can't see it being enough. Laying off all our staff is going to be so hard.

Flibbitygibbit · 17/03/2020 21:23

Water company. I deal with 💩

hatgirl · 17/03/2020 21:25

Social worker in a chronically understaffed adults team.

I genuinely don't know how we are going to get through this. But my job is safe.

Elsiebear90 · 17/03/2020 21:27

Clinical scientist, cardiology NHS, also ex biomedical scientist in haematology (so could always retrain and go back into that if my job disappears somehow), fiancée is a physiotherapist, NHS. So not worried at all about our job security, one of the few perks of working in the NHS!

homemadecommunistrussia · 17/03/2020 21:28

Library assistants ok for now, but already pretty fucked.

FollowingNow · 17/03/2020 21:30

DH works for an asset management firm in IT. He isn't worried. They got through the last financial crash OK.

I work for a charity. I think we're ok. Our funding for the next 5 years is guaranteed.

Metagoth · 17/03/2020 21:30

I'm a care home manager though will be helping out on the floor given how things progress.

My partner is in an admin role for a university so is pretty safe and also has a second job as a support worker. We are aware we are the lucky ones and my heart breaks for everyone else.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 17/03/2020 21:33

@stubbleturnips. Me too, my team mates speciality is pandemic. Mine is recovery and business continuity. Tell me they've backed you off too. Although we're starting to step up to the table now.

londonrach · 17/03/2020 21:34

Mychitchatdays · 17/03/2020 21:34

Tourism and Events, I don't know when I'll get a job again.

TangointhePark · 17/03/2020 21:35

Social worker in child protection - my job will be fine.

BumbleBeee69 · 17/03/2020 21:35

My work is a LifeLine Service... I'm okay..

PurpleCrazyHorse · 17/03/2020 21:36

DH is in a creative industry but niche and they grew during the last recession. He already works remotely most of the time so no change there. Always a chance the business could go to pot though but they're a smaller size so can be very responsive. He's the main earner so it is a worry.

I work in school admin but in a specialised role. Fairly new in post, but feeling optimistic that my job will be okay.

Ostagazuzulum · 17/03/2020 21:37

DH and I are both police so we're in a fortunate position job wise

KatLoudew · 17/03/2020 21:40

I work in the Agricultural supply retail business and our customers need us to consistently supply what they need to continue to feed the population.

The only worry perhaps is staffing due the business to enforced isolation periods. But I'm very lucky I have a secure job.

TeenyQueen · 17/03/2020 21:40

Teacher but currently on maternity leave, fortunately. DH is a dentist and owns his own dental practice. He will probably have to reduce his hours or even provide emergency cover only. Our family will be fine financially even if his income is reduced for some time. Much more worried about his staff, we may have to make some staff redundant temporarily if demand falls or the government puts further restrictions in place. Hoping it won't come to that.

wizzywig · 17/03/2020 21:43

Civil service

Sickoffamilydrama · 17/03/2020 21:47

Those saying undertakers should honestly think what will happen of it gets really bad. They will probably not do traditional funerals. Which everything around them stops.

I'm senior leadership for a company that manufacturers a product for funeral directors we are 70 years old and we are really worried. The fact is if product isn't going out money isn't coming in.

MeOldBamboo · 17/03/2020 21:50

Telecoms in a niche role which means I’ll be busier than ever enabling people to work from home. Thankful I’m in this industry but pressure is ramping up!
