Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

@Thursday12 @hatgirl

I'm also a social worker- in a child protection team. Our local authority is currently really struggling with staffing. I'm also pregnant so now working from home. It almost feels impossible to do my job over the phone and on a laptop. I'm so worried about children and vulnerable families. Especially as schools will close at some point. I think there will be an increase in neglect, domestic abuse, substance misuse and emotional and physical abuse will increase. I'm not sure what the long term plan is but I think it would be helpful to redeploy education workers (be it teachers, receptionist etc) to deliver school meals in a safe way, therefore ensuring children are at the very least, being fed.

Thursday12 · 17/03/2020 22:03

Yes I’m very concerned about some of my families on child protection plans, particularly as all the other agencies who regularly visit on top of me and deliver services are no longer doing that. I am very lucky as I am healthy and no underlying issues so I am visiting regardless, but with families where they are now displaying symptoms the debate is visit in spite of that given the concerns for the children or essentially leave noone visiting so its very worrying times. Also concerned for young children on my caseload who are not even in school so I need to be the person seeing them, but definitely agree the situation leaves many children more isolated and exposed to neglect, domestic abuse etc. Marac meetings etc and general professional meetings are not taking place so undoubtably children are bring exposed to greater risk now

Civil Service and I’m an ex language teacher so whilst the virus is crippling the language school industry, it should open up a huge amount of online work.

ginandnappies · 17/03/2020 22:07

I wish. Oil and gas and it's been a dodgy few years anyway. I doubt I'll have my job in a few months.

StubbleTurnips · 17/03/2020 22:08

@whycantIthinkofadecentusername started in January with this, add corona to UK storms and flooding I’ve not had a day off in weeks! I’m Flu / Flooding.... dabble in BC on occasion.
I used to do DR once upon a time Grin

FenellaVelour · 17/03/2020 22:08

Social worker, but a role which requires a lot of report writing so can work from home and use Skype when I need to see someone. Can’t see my job disappearing.
My husband works in HR systems for the local authority and can also work from home so is carrying on as normal, just indoors.

We are very fortunate. I feel awful for those who are suffering through this, physically and financially.

Curlyshabtree · 17/03/2020 22:10

Travel industry. It’s not the end of travel forever but it is on a sabbatical.

Ginntoniconpause · 17/03/2020 22:10

It's a scary time. Our service is screening before visits, so if there are symptoms the visit wont go ahead. Although I do think that would depend on level of risk ultimately... I worry that some families would hide behind this though and become more evasive. We also have a lot of meetings that aren't going ahead because we're only able to respond to really critical stuff right now.

Jeaniealogy · 17/03/2020 22:12

Mental health Advocacy, a statutory role but employer is a charity....role is niche and LA/health contract funded. The need for the service will always be there but employer may look to restructure if funding is cut. OH is a music tutor/professional musician offering face to face and skype, has seen all gigs cancelled and many lessons too despite being able to do remotely...people are not spending on anything other than essentials

And what about the ‘work from home’ staff? Perhaps they could use their lunch breaks to to deliver school meals and ensure children are fed? 🙄. Why don’t the Social Workers who are working from home organise some sort of community initiatives - then you wouldn’t need to work from home?=

Myfridgeisnoisy · 17/03/2020 22:14

Foster carer and children's home manager. We have heard nothing from our local authority's Children's Services other than to suspend our training from today. Currently my foster child and myself do not have social workers, the gaps can only widen with the anticipated staff shortages.

Yeyellow · 17/03/2020 22:16

I work for a NHS trust which has announced full sick pay to all staff who need to self isolate. And are giving ALL bank staff permanent contracts so they can access sick pay.

PissesWhencoughs · 17/03/2020 22:18

I’m in early years, work in a centre that’s run by a charity. They can’t guarantee our pay after this month. DH works in fashion retail he will probably get a cut in hours at least so even less money coming in. We’re pretty fucked. Landlord is the devil incarnate so I’m sure he’ll be making our life hell for the foreseeable.

Brenna24 · 17/03/2020 22:22

I am currently a SAHM. I was a research scientist at a university. DH is also a research scientist, in neglected diseases and in his case is bioinformatics (all computer based). He is working from home and his job should be fine. I feel very fortunate right now, which is odd after several years of recurrent miscarriage, infertility and being made redundant just before my final, successful pregnancy. It does make me totally terrified at the thought of losing my beautiful DD. We buried her oldest brother so I know how hard losing a child is and that was before he was born/viable. I can't contemplate losing another.

Naady · 17/03/2020 22:23

Pharmacist(me) and Anaesthetist so going to be very busy.
I really feel for people losing their jobs overnight.

Jenasaurus · 17/03/2020 22:26

Im NHS emergency services, non-operational, and working from home at the moment

cinders222 · 17/03/2020 22:27

Police so I am not worried, Hubby in manufacturing, not as secure me but not too bad they are producing a lot of hand sanitiser

ellanwood · 17/03/2020 22:28

I'm an editor. Everyone seems to be either reading or writing a book during shut down, which makes me wonder if this is one trade where there'll be an upsurge in work after the isolation period is lifted.

blossombabies · 17/03/2020 22:31

civil service here so very safe here!

mamaduckbone · 17/03/2020 22:36

I'm a teacher and although it feels bizarre and ill-advised to be carrying on as normal at the moment (albeit with half the teaching time spent hand washing) I'm so grateful not to be amongst the thousands who are worried that they won't have a job by the end of the week.

Usernamealreadyexists · 17/03/2020 22:40

Academia at a uni in a field with lots of demand. Feeling v fortunate as my job is secure for at least 4 years and i can work from anywhere.

TiddyTid · 17/03/2020 22:40

IFA that works from home. I absolutely appreciate my situation right now and how lucky I am in these scary times.

torthecatlady · 17/03/2020 22:41

My husband works in social care. He almost certainly has job security.

I work in sales (of a non-essential product) in a very small company. I'm one of 2 people in sales and it is unlikely that I would be made redundant. However, the company could potentially close (worst case scenario) or I could lose hours because of Covid-19.
