Perhaps no one rising to the bait of a party political slanging match.

BarbedBloom · 17/03/2020 18:05

It is all over Twitter, people are saying the same. Hoping they will put in some measures after seeing the response. Council tax too

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 18:05

I’m bothered, doesn’t affect me as we can both wfh and work for big multinationals. It doesn’t make it ok for others though, it’s penalising the most vulnerable - I do think there will be a response but it needs to be soon.

Shortfeet · 17/03/2020 18:06

Unfortunately one person's rent is another person's income.

NanSlayer · 17/03/2020 18:08

Renters will be able to trade a Tuna 8 pack for a flat in 9 months

ferrier · 17/03/2020 18:09

Renters may get immediate help with housing costs through benefits. Mortgagees do not get help through benefits for 9 months.

Goawayquickly · 17/03/2020 18:11

Not all renters are on benefits!

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 18:14

What? Rent around here is £1200+.....landlords don’t accept anyone on benefits.

Ylvamoon · 17/03/2020 18:14

Renters will be allowed to build a temporary home made from Toilet Rolls on council land...
On a serious note, I am sure if renters fall below a certain wage level they will be entitled to benefits and help with housing costs... mortgage isn't covered... so renters have indefinitely while home owners have 3 months!

F-kin hope so!

Fannia · 17/03/2020 18:15

They did say they will be bringing out more measures later. I am wondering if there is an enforced 12 week self isolation period for some people they may be able to claim from some kind of hardship fund.

BarbedBloom · 17/03/2020 18:15

I am not on benefits. Our local housing allowance is about 200 short of the average rent as well.

Helpwithaversion · 17/03/2020 18:16

What about council tenants ? Would local authorities give them a rent holiday

kittykat7210 · 17/03/2020 18:20

People with a mortgage stand to lose everything, thousands and thousands saved from deposits and paying off the mortgage AND will be homeless, renters will just be homeless. We bought our first house a year ago, right now I wish we were still renting.

SachaStark · 17/03/2020 18:22

Why can’t the private landlords take mortgage holidays, then allow their tenants to take a rent holiday in return?

That’s what my lovely landlord wants to do. We are so, so, so lucky to have him. He messaged totally out of the blue last night, and said that we shouldn’t be worried about trying to make rent, but to let him know as soon as possible if we think we will struggle, and he will sort it out.

PussyWillowPeach · 17/03/2020 18:23

I’ve been wondering this myself. We are fortunate in that we both have jobs that have been able to continue WFH. However if we didn’t then we’d be buggered as we have no savings for a rainy day.

GeraltOfRivia · 17/03/2020 18:23

I've already contacted my tenant to see how he is. He is alright and still earning but he knows he can come to us if that changes. If he needs to pause rent we'll apply for the mortgage holiday so we can afford to do that. If not we can just keep on as usual. What I won't be doing is taking a mortgage holiday AND charging him rent. That would be morally reprehensible

Helpwithaversion · 17/03/2020 18:24

renters will just be homeless

Oh that’s ok then 🤔

@sachaStark

He sounds like an angel.

Mydogatemypurse · 17/03/2020 18:24

Renters get housing benefit and council tax benefit. People with a mortgage get nothing. Thry can apply for a government loan once they have been unemployed and unable to pay for 9 months by which time they have prob lost their property. So yes typical tories.

Midnightstar11 · 17/03/2020 18:25

kittykat7210 are you serious us poor renters will be homeless , I'm a renter I have three dc this is our home but it's ok because I rent it's fine il be homeless. The mortgage investors are doing a 3 month holiday relief your protected tenants are notBiscuit

BarbedBloom · 17/03/2020 18:26

Well that's okay then Kittykat, I will be glad you kept your deposit when I am on the streets...

eyeoresancerre · 17/03/2020 18:27

Sasha stark - that's what we plan to do. If our renters can't make rent then we'll take the mortgage break for 3 months and then they won't have to stress about the rent that will give them and us some breathing room. Doesn't matter to us if we end up paying 3 months longer on a 25 year mortgage. After that who knows what will happen but as our renters are both self employed I imagine making enough money to live on and pay rent will be incredibly difficult currently.
