*For those hard of reading

My rent works out to £253pw
UC £350pw

So I would have £97pw to pay all utilitys, phone, car, debts, food.

But yea "I don't see that the problem is"*

No because the rent is a separate section of universal credit.

You do realise mortgage payers pretty much can get nothing for it whilst unemployed whilst there mortgages are cheaper than the rents.

BlueGheko · 17/03/2020 19:40

My landlord just called me as I was reading this thread, only speak about once a year at most. Been here 10 years and he pretty much leaves me to it. Just checking I was ok/still had a job and telling me not to worry if things changed, reassuring me I wouldn't be kicked out, even though he's just lost his business. He is the best landlord I've ever had. There are some good uns. Hopefully those less fortunate will get the help they need.

Greysparkles · 17/03/2020 19:40

No it isn't!!!!!

CupoTeap · 17/03/2020 19:42

Also remember when renters are made homeless for not paying their rent that's their credit fucked, who is going to rent to them then?

IndieTara · 17/03/2020 19:42

@solo it's true some may have more disposable income when renting but homeowners have a property as an asset that renters do not.
And let's not forget there are far more private renters than HA renters many of whom pay inflated rents and almost always pay much higher rents than HA Tenants. Plus what about single parent tenants? I can pretty much guarantee they won't have more disposable income.

GA2012 · 17/03/2020 19:43

renters get housing benefit!! If income is low or on benefits. People with mortgage don’t get that security if they become ill, lose their job or falls into hard times.

MoonBlood · 17/03/2020 19:43

Renters get housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Private renters here and we get neither 🤔

mynamesmrdiggety · 17/03/2020 19:43

I am a reluctant landlord in negative equity, plus my flat costs me about £200 a month more than I get in rent. If my tenant can't pay I am going to see if I can get a mortgage holiday. We shall see.

eeyore228 · 17/03/2020 19:44

Not everyone gets help with rent. Ours is £1150 and we pay it all and the council tax. No benefit here. Is this what people really believe?!?

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 19:45

Unless you lose income, why would you need help? If you need help there is already a safety net. Not great, I know, but there is no safety net for LLs who still have to pay a mortgage.

Nothing but......their own house? Income insurance, mortgage breaks, loans against their house, releasing equity.....

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 19:46

To put it into context in our situation....we pay £1900....the landlord pays £180

I hope this is a leveller in some ways, it’s about time.

motortroll · 17/03/2020 19:47

Isn't it the point that the house owner gets the payment break? It's up to then to pass it on the renters.

Chloemol · 17/03/2020 19:48

Why not contact one of the press officers at the bbc and get Laura to ask them the question about renters at the public daily briefings?

mumwon · 17/03/2020 19:49

if its a mortgage holiday does that mean you have to repay this when you go back to work & things go back to normal (no doubt owing extra interest as well knowing banks) so will you be happy to repay the owed rent plus interest? Just curious &apparently - if what I understand from the blurb at the briefing - extra funding will be available from council for those in need.

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 19:49

renters get housing benefit!! If income is low or on benefits. People with mortgage don’t get that security if they become ill, lose their job or falls into hard times.

Housing benefit does NOT COVER PRIVATE RENTS.

Again.....income insurance, critical illness, equity release, loans.....and you’d still have money in the house....

Or why don’t you sell it and try renting considering how much better we get it?

Fettfrett · 17/03/2020 19:50

No one is saying everyone renting is on benefits. What they mean is that IF you are renting, you can apply for housing and council tax benefits if your financial situation changes due to coronavirus.

People who own their home cannot receive any benefits towards their mortgages, there will be no government support for anyone with a mortgage. What they have arranged is for their banks to allow mortgage holidays. This doesn't mean you get your mortgage paid for 3 months, it means you pause your payments and the end of your mortgage is extended by 3 months. They will end up paying more because of interest charges.

Renters are far better off in this situation. Renters can apply for money to help them pay their rent if they aren't getting paid, which they then won't have to pay back.

KnotOnMyWatch · 17/03/2020 19:51

renters will just be homeless

That's okay then... Hmm never thought I'd see the sentence 'just homeless' as if it's not that bad.

Not all renters get benefits. When I was renting my rent was more than my mortgage is! I'd have found it harder to pay rent now than I would have my mortgage.

There needs to be an answer to this.

AgnesNaismith · 17/03/2020 19:51

Isn't it the point that the house owner gets the payment break? It's up to then to pass it on the renters.

In general they won’t unless they are told to....and currently it’s only those affected that should apply for mortgage breaks. It could also affect their credit score.

Findumdum1 · 17/03/2020 19:52

Whats critical illness cover got to do with having a mortgage? You can have (or not have it like most people) whether you have a mortgage or rent?

R2221 · 17/03/2020 19:52

Correct me if I’m wrong:
Mortgage payments are not waived off. Just postponed! So landlords are not getting free money - they are just able to DEFER their debt repayment.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 17/03/2020 19:54

I'm a landlord (have no pension and am self employed as a sole trader so no benefits or sick pay etc to fall back on). I have to pay the mortgage on the house I rent out and anything left over which isn't much is part of my income. Literally my only income. Landlords are not greedy fat cats just people trying to invest for some sort of future. If my tenants can't pay yes I'll speak to them and see what we can agree but if I say three months rent holiday I will be bankrupt and the house will probably be repossessed anyway thus leaving them homeless.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 17/03/2020 19:57

My understanding is that mortgage holidays are only for your own house, not any houses you rent out. We will of course speak to our buy to let mortgage company and see what they can do but I'm not hopeful.

SoloMummy · 17/03/2020 19:58

@Paddingtonthebear
You opt to pay 16k in rent, so obviously live an above average life, and given average salaries are 30k. If you cannot claim child benefit this is because at least one of earns over 50-60k.
If you have no contignecy plans when there are people who literally live hand to mouth, then you need to acc3some responsibility for those choices, you have made, be they holidays, luxuries, cars whatever.

HeIenaDove · 17/03/2020 19:59

renters will just be homeless

Youll be humming a different tune if/when this happens to NHS workers NHS cleaners etc who live in private rented/social housing and it affects their ability to go to work and be there to treat YOU if God forbid you catch this virus.

Try thinking critically for once in your life.

todayisnottuesday · 17/03/2020 19:59

for some landlords the rent they receive is their only income so for them

They shouldn't be landlords then.
