Renters to get feck all.

Typical tories.

HeIenaDove · 17/03/2020 18:52

If renters are always better off then why the hell buy.

The usual Tory shit.

IndieTara · 17/03/2020 18:53

@solo but it doesn't mean that for everyone or even most. Even if rent is covered there are often huge gaps due to low LHA

Binting · 17/03/2020 18:59

If renters struggle that extensively they'll be eligible for the rental element of universal credit. That means their rent paid free. No claw back after three months.

This!

More measures to come regarding individuals. The govt. can’t just rush out with a load of measures in a day, they need to consult across parties and agencies to put the most effective measures in place with the resources we have.

recreationalcalpol · 17/03/2020 18:59

There are proposals in place for covid rent arrears not to be counted in possession proceedings. It will be okay

Terryscombover · 17/03/2020 18:59

I think it will come. It's the same issue in Spain to sort all the different kinds of landlords!

SoloMummy · 17/03/2020 19:00

@IndieTara
Even with huge gaps, there's no arguing that this makes renters in the whole have far higher disposable incomes than those with a mortgage and the associated ongoing costs.
I know someone who quire literally struggles on universal credit to survive as a mortgage owner. She receives about £150 a month. If she however rented, she would have received £600 in rent being paid and foregone the £150. So she's in effect always worse off as a homeowner on a low income. And you can see why many on higher incomes remain renting social housing homes due to the security of not maintaining the building and paying a pittance in comparison.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/03/2020 19:01

Would that cover everyone though? What about people, who have year to date earnt too much and have no savings?

I’m a landlord. I don’t want my tenants to suffer. I was hoping for some clarification today and need to talk to my agent.

I have mortgages on the rentals. Did the government say there would be a payment holiday if necessary for landlords? I missed that bit.

bmbonanza · 17/03/2020 19:01

What about other bills for those who dont get full sick pay, or self employed. Why is rent/mortgage singled out?

kittykat7210 · 17/03/2020 19:02

Helena, renters aren’t always better off at all! It’s just when it comes to falling behind on payments they are better off simply because they don’t have as much to lose! We were happy we got out of renting at the time, just purely with this situation arising it would be less long term damaging to be renting than paying a mortgage should the worst happen and we both have to go on sick leave or lose our jobs.

It’s so unfortunate anyone is in this situation, I can just see why the government concentrated on mortgages first

ssd · 17/03/2020 19:04

Matt Frei was bloody right, to a degree.
I was thinking about this today, how over the years I've seen so many on mn have such a them and us attitude and how misfortune will never happen to them, as they work hard, plan well etc etc.
Well corona turmoil has hit us all and I'd hoped those thinking they were above shit hitting the fan would pause and realise no one is above misfortune and having an 'I'm all right jack' attitude helps no one.

HeIenaDove · 17/03/2020 19:07

It was another poster who said renters are ALWAYS better off.

HeIenaDove · 17/03/2020 19:08

d I'd hoped those thinking they were above shit hitting the fan would pause

lol

SanFranBear · 17/03/2020 19:12

People with a mortgage stand to lose everything, thousands and thousands saved from deposits and paying off the mortgage

I just don't understand this attitude - renters also pay thousands and thousands to live in someone else's home. I currently pay over £10k a year and have done in one shape or other for over 20yrs now. But it's ok - I'll just be homeless if I can't pay my rent... nice!

Bingeslayer · 17/03/2020 19:14

I'm a pt working single mum,I work for a cleaning company with shit working practices so as there's less work I get less pay, even though the company are still charging customers percentage for cancelling,
I rent,my 2 landlords are both in very well paid jobs and not short of money.I still have to pay full rent.

Greysparkles · 17/03/2020 19:15

OK. So for all you saying to just claim benifits it you rent.
Ive just done a benefit calculator to show what we would be entitled to if we lose our jobs. Which is probably going to happen as we are both SE

£350.22 per week.
Our rent is £1100pm

So just stop it. Universal credit isn't going to save anyone

bobstersmum · 17/03/2020 19:15

Give them chance to sort out what they are going to do to help you, I'm positive that they will help renters in the same way they've offered to help mortgage payers. It will likely be announced tomorrow. They HAVE to help you 🤞

Paddingtonthebear · 17/03/2020 19:22

We pay over £16k a year in private rent. We don’t get any allowances for council tax or claim any benefit or whatever else some previously mentioned. Are people really that ignorant to think anyone renting is claiming benefits?!

We are not eligible to claim for anything, not even child benefit. I am probably about to lose my job due to the current CV crisis but I think we will be ok on husbands salary. Our wealthy landlord will probably get a 3 month mortgage break on his BTL mortgage. We will keep paying inflated rent as usual.

w00dlander · 17/03/2020 19:22

If you're not getting paid you can claim housing benefit. I don't see the issue!

Jaxhog · 17/03/2020 19:25

Unless you lose income, why would you need help? If you need help there is already a safety net. Not great, I know, but there is no safety net for LLs who still have to pay a mortgage.

BMW6 · 17/03/2020 19:30

Op - how many Mortgage lenders are there? 20? 30? 100?

How many landlords are there?

Do you see a problem with HOW in a million years?

Greysparkles · 17/03/2020 19:30

For those hard of reading

My rent works out to £253pw
UC £350pw

So I would have £97pw to pay all utilitys, phone, car, debts, food.

But yea "I don't see that the problem is"

Bingeslayer · 17/03/2020 19:30

Yes but the top amount they pay is nowhere near the rental cost as pp has said.

GreyHare · 17/03/2020 19:32

All these people saying oh if you lose your job you get housing benefit, do you really think they are going to be able to see and process possibly thousands of applications over the next few months.

Vallderama · 17/03/2020 19:33

Yeah renters lose the money they pay for their homes every month as soon as it hits the landlord's bank account. But that's ok because all that will happen to them now on top of that is that they'll be homeless.

Fuck my fucking life.

IndieTara · 17/03/2020 19:35

It's just been said on Sky News that the Secretary for Housing will be making a statement re renters in the next few days
