In despair over older relatives

Just off the phone with parents trying to get them to take the advice to avoid social contact as much as possible seriously, was met with the response that they don't want to stop living their life and that they are still fit and young ( both are pushing 70 with underlying health issues). Other older relatives much the same, apparently they are immune and I'm overreacting Sad

@daisypond even if it can be rearranged? A drs apt was cancelled so a GP called my grandma and she asked and she said it's also fine for them to collect prescriptions. It's so confusing, if they're to be on lockdown then I assumed anything that could be arranged should be?

daisypond · 18/03/2020 13:14

If the hospital thinks the appointment could be cancelled, they will cancel it. If possibly life-saving, they will try to keep it. Take the appointment while it is still on offer. My GP has cancelled an appointment with me to have bloods taken, but my appointments for cancer treatment at the hospital are continuing- at least for now.

Mum and in laws are being sensible, an aunt not so much, but, her attitude is no surprise

Is if use to anyone on this thread, I found out Morrisons is going to be doing phone food orders from next week for the elderly who don't have access to the internet and need home deliveries. Iceland also I think

Never mind the elderly, there's a thread today on here about whether people are still going for hair and beauty appointments and pretty much everyone is replying that they are because their roots need doing or their eyebrows are shocking. Twats.

Many don’t understand or haven’t the correct info. It needs to be on a one page poster, printed in newspapers and plastered over every TV channel. My 80yo fil with a lung condition has no idea he wasn’t to go out and had not changed any part of his life. I had to tell him. The poor bugger reckoned the NHS would help the old ones because they are old. Literally no idea that people can need a respirator and also no idea that not enough.

Has no mobile phone or internet so the info needs to be put out to people like this via traditional methods.

Saw MIL earlier in the week who was saying how worried she was about the situation, being in the at risk age group etc. Text her to see how she was today and she replied "just on way to town on the bus". Asked why she was going (thinking she must be in desperate need of something) but no, just thought she should make the most of it before they ban us from going anywhere altogether.

There's far too much demonising oh older people here. Patronising sanctimonious. Back off and go out and offer tohelp your frail and elderly neighbours with shopping and other tasks instead of coming on here moaning about your elderly relatives

daisypond · 18/03/2020 20:27

@mondaypolomint
People on here are trying to help their elderly neighbours, friends and relatives. That’s the whole point.
