This may be a daft question, but does anyone know how big the geographical area you can move between during a lockdown is? For example, if you worked in the next town/ county, would you still be allowed to travel there?

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 18:43

The school run today was really awkward.

I couldn't believe the number of people who were just stood around chatting to each other. I felt rude just dodging everyone and trying to keep it to hi and bye.

One parent who is a neighbour said "oh don't worry, your son can come round and play". Her father has serious health problems and now won't open the door to her.

I politely said that we were now done and locked down and won't be taking them up on the invite.

DH is still setting up working from home for his company. Hopefully tomorrow is his last day in office.

Yes despite seeing the carnage across Europe the UK has still not grasped just how devastating this virus is going to be. We had the opportunity to enforce widescale shutdowns to have a chance of at least slowing it down but have wasted this time. China have said how many deaths and critically I'll could have been avoided if they had acted 1 week earlier. Even our best efforts now will be nowhere near as successful as China has been so far. We are not protecting our medical staff and it is horrifying.

SansaSnark · 17/03/2020 18:44

@fedup21 We've heard nothing from Exam boards/JCQ, so I'm assuming they don't have anything fixed in place.

I'm not actually sure of the first GCSE exam date, but I know the first science paper (Biology 1) is on 12th May- less than 2 months away.

My Year 12s are taking AS Psychology which is on the 11th May, which I think is the first day of sixth form exams.

AvocadoOwl · 17/03/2020 18:44

Seems to be business as usual at my kids' schools. Hardly any teachers off and everyone seems quite calm about it all. Extra hand washing and no assemblies etc but no sense of panic or doom. Certainly my children don't seem at all anxious or worried. Feeling lucky having read some posts from other parents on here today Confused

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 18:44

Depends what you work as. I imagine if your job was essential but could be done nearer you be asked to work there.

669 ICU cases from 7730 total in France. Seems high, like Italy.

On the positive side there’s a lot of buzz about chloroquine as a potential treatment. It’s an existing, cheap anti-malarial drug that the Chinese and South Koreans have had some success with.

I had a parent yesterday asking about arranging a play date in the Easter holidays... I’ve said we are not making any social plans for the next couple of months! Don’t people see the news? Confused some people still seem so naive about it still.

SansaSnark · 17/03/2020 18:49

I have seen lots of promising stuff about potential treatments- which is good news. Anything that improves potential outcomes has to be welcomed.

mrshoho · 17/03/2020 18:53

We've cancelled everything here too. Priority is to support elderly parents and try to stay healthy. my school is closing from tomorrow. Planning that my kids schools will close on Friday. Although year 10 daughter may be asked to go in.

Helenj1977 · 17/03/2020 18:58

Do you want to know what I really hate. Waking up and remembering it's real.

Will it ever actually go?

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2020 18:59

Me too Helen every morning.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 17/03/2020 19:04

Dds friend is still pestering everyone about going to her 15th at a naice hotel on Sat. Apparently her parents are happy for it to go ahead.

I said no, because of what the Gov is advising so dd now thinks I’m being unreasonable, she’s the only one not allowed!

bananacakeZ · 17/03/2020 19:05

My GP surgery just announced no face to face appointments at all, I reckon that means they know there are cases here, which would be new. Small town.

mrshoho · 17/03/2020 19:11

Yes it's an impending feeling of doom. But yes it will go eventually. Our hope will be a vaccine and possibly successful treatments with existing drugs. Also natural build up of immunity. It's not going to be fixed quickly but we have to have hope. It's crushing for businesses and I'm not trivialising (my dh is in this boat) but finances can and do recover. Scientists have warned for decades a pandemic is a possibility. The downsides of a capitalist society are exposed in situations such as these.

CricketCrocket · 17/03/2020 19:11

There’s suspected cases (staff and students) at my youngest’s primary school and I’m expected to send her in. Madness.

KOKOagainandagain · 17/03/2020 19:12

DS2 has been at internet school for several years now - not really a choice, more a failure of SEN education.

It's good to break the link between school and learning and it is essential to mental health, performative worth, view of self as a learner etc when m/s education fails. It works. It's fine. No stupid rules. The need to be an independent learner rather than passive.

Much of what we hear of the cons of closing schools, marauding packs of teens etc, are based on not providing an online learning environment. Like other countries have done.

DS2 has a full school day with live lessons but is in internet school. He has no time free to maraud. What kind of futuristic magic is this?

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/03/2020 19:16

Can I ask a possibly stupid question. My mum is on the south coast. She has a friend in Essex. Both have to isolate for health reasons. Is there anything to stop them isolating together? The friend drives and could drive down without any other contact with people. They are both very upset about feeling lonely and I suddenly thought why not isolate together. Friend could bring all her food and stuff from home so they would have enough for 2 people. Any flaws in the plan?

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 19:21

Possibly getting access to a gp or any repeat prescriptions or legal reasons if total lockdown happens.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/03/2020 19:22

angry yes repeat prescriptions could be a problem as friend is on medication. Damn it! I really thought I could make 2 elderly ladies a bit happier.

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 19:23

Through i suspect a lot of over 70 will move in with relatives and it will be tough for the government to force them to go home.

Justforthislifetime · 17/03/2020 19:24

The one out of area could register as a temporary resident with GP in the new area though?

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 19:27

GP are not accepting temporary ones.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/03/2020 19:29

It seemed so simple. But alas not to be. They are both widows and would of been nice for them to have some company at this time. They would of watched reruns of the chase together lol.
