Successful early signs in coronavirus treatment trial:

Everything crossed for this to work.

tobee · 21/03/2020 19:45

Glad to come back here.

Even talking to my close family members is quite draining right now. Just endless repetition and I feel like I have to just listen. Which is ok normally but it's quadrupled.

My Dh, who is most vulnerable health wise, on the other hand, is great! He is just pragmatic but also able to be funny and entertaining and informative about all the side effects of the coverage. Jokes and memes and so on.

Millie2013 · 21/03/2020 19:49

Hmm, for the first time in 5 years, I am missing doing Science Stuff. I walked away from academia, because the role wasn't doing my mental health any good, I don't miss the politics, but I do miss the science stuff that I spent 7 years training for. I miss using that part of my brain...

Keynote1 · 21/03/2020 20:00

@Alsohuman, Sausages and savoury rice Smile

Bouncingbomb · 21/03/2020 20:04

Keynote, I cooked chicken sausages with a risotto that I used up the blue cheese in and some sugar snap peas that we’re looking a bit sad/shrivelled Shock ..... sausages and rice!

MortyFide · 21/03/2020 20:25

I've been reading here daily but haven't commented for a while - intense puppy duties, like a PP!

Just had a skim through the other threads (and commented on one just because the poor OP already has crippling anxiety and I told her something someone once told me, which alleviated some of my raging emetophobic fears during the "norovirus epidemic" which never really was in 2007).

But otherwise, blimey, panic much? Calm the fuck down for goodness sake.

I'm more frustrated that we can't just go to the shops the way we normally would and get chicken, bread, pasta or milk etc. DH has tried 3 days in a row, there has been no meat in any of the 4 large supermarkets in/near our town. We had some from last weeks shop which we ate last night, but we're mostly surviving on ready meals and pizzas. And biscuits and cake, shit if I didn't have a BMI of 40 before I will after this. Oh, he did find some burgers and chipolatas in M&S earlier. I hope things start normalising soon.

The puppy is a bloody pissing machine and a shoe stealing little bastard, why do things seem to be going well then suddenly you go 3 steps back? He was so lovely today, then this evening he turned feral, hoarded 18 shoes and pissed 4 times in 20 minutes. Good job he's adorable.

Was it evening zombies? Morty? Grin

Daffodilpasta · 21/03/2020 20:53

Thanks all this a fantastic thread, have been checking over the last few days so wanted to post and thank everyone- always feel calmer when reading.
As a GP there is a lot of information overload coming our way, and actually quite a lot of it is positive- it’s when I get home and read the news everything feels more overwhelming!
Some positive things ; our GP trainees have had massive upheaval (not able to sit exams, not able to rotate as planned in April) but have been generally incredibly stoical and supporting the NHS
Our patients are heeding advice and accepting routine stuff will go on hold, it may change expectations and behaviour in the longer run
Some evidence based statistics looking at Italy suggest that why the covid death rate may look high, it may not be as bad as thought as some of those patients died with it rather than from it, iyswim
And forecast sunshine all day tomorrow!
Thanks everyone.

Siameasy · 21/03/2020 21:00

Felt a bit anxious earlier. Everyone at work is non stop doom and gloom and now and then I’m drawn in by the tabloids.
DH and I are emergency services and must be careful not to get mentally burned out by all this.

A funny thing to mention is - has anyone been eating weird food combos so as not to waste food?

Lunch: salami, carrots and walnuts. Random!

Also enjoying out of date food - yum!

Off to bed as work early 2morow. I’m trying to read more and avoid the news.

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 21:03

then this evening he turned feral, hoarded 18 shoes and pissed 4 times in 20 minutes

Ah, the dreaded witching hour! Ours used to be a whirlwind harridan of needle sharp teeth and claws. It doesn’t last long although it feels like eternity.

Siameasy · 21/03/2020 21:06

Dogs have witching hours too? I thought it was just kids?

MortyFide · 21/03/2020 21:12

Yep, evening zoomies / witching hour! See image...

From BBC news website-

On Monday, we're going to bring you a day of live coverage focusing on the positive stories, like these, that are emerging from the coronavirus crisis. We hope you can join us from 07:00 GMT.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/03/2020 21:28

Daffodil nice to hear and from a GP, thanks Flowers yes that is the thing, which people don't seem to mention too much, that the elderly do have a lot of other conditions going on don't they. I think we have to remember, old people do die...and if it is peaceful and respectful that is a good thing.

tobee · 21/03/2020 21:37

Flipping autocorrect zoomies not zombies!!! Morty

Orangeblossom78 · 21/03/2020 21:41

Some of the other threads on here are making me feel anxious about even going out for a walk in the park, even using the hand gel before and after, it is silly I know but the way they are talking and swearing at people.

Surely there is an element of personal responsibility too, we all need to just wash our hands, not get too close to others and then we can freely go for a walk in peace. there is a balance and some people will only be happy if we are all 'locked in' at home.

I don't understand why there seems to be little empathy for people putting their lives, their livelihoods on hold and the fact that often it is the older people themselves who are not following their advice to stay at home.

HonestlyItsFine · 21/03/2020 21:43

More good news: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/19/british-scientists-discover-antibody-offering-hope-coronavirus/

Science will find a treatment. I hope it's soon.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/03/2020 21:58

Good news here about the NHS

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51989183

Orangeblossom78 · 21/03/2020 21:59

The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to acquire thousands of extra beds, ventilators and medical staff to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week.
It comes as the number of people in the UK to die with coronavirus rose to 233.
The agreement will see the private sector reallocate almost its entire national hospital capacity to the NHS

HonestlyItsFine · 21/03/2020 22:03

Interesting. Most private hospitals don't really have ICU provision. Maybe they'll be using them for more routine stuff and planned operations, freeing up the general hospitals.

NemophilistRebel · 21/03/2020 22:04

People should be shouting about that from the rooftops
It’s amazingly good news

Poppyliveshere · 21/03/2020 22:11

Thank you all for your wonderfully upbeat posts.....I’ve not been on any other MN threads for weeks now. And daffodilpasta thank you for your insider views, so important to hear as I feel that the nations mental health is also at risk here, so positives needed to restore some balance to the overwhelming negatives 💐

Orangeblossom78 · 21/03/2020 22:20

I read only some people need intensive care Honestly, maybe they will be caring for patients not needing that level of care? Not sure.

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 22:24

Brilliant news, they’ll free up critical care beds by looking after those less ill presumably.
