The U.K. will face delays in getting the coronavirus vaccine as a result of our having left the EU. Now that we’re staring down the barrel of tangible consequences for that decision, how are the turkeys who voted for Christmas feeling?

DigitalGhost · 16/03/2020 15:33

It's obvs just propaganda though.

Reginabambina · 16/03/2020 15:35

Well there isn’t really any reason why they would at the moment. This sort of thing will be impacted when and if Parliament introduces a different regulatory regime.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 16/03/2020 15:35

It's fine, they're vaccinated from all life's ills with their super special dose of SOVEREIGNTY

slipperywhensparticus · 16/03/2020 15:35

Umm we are working in a worldwide vaccine

Seventyone72seventy3 · 16/03/2020 15:35

Why would you think it is propaganda? We voted to leave the EMA. Surely you would expect that to have some effect?

Wtfdoipick · 16/03/2020 15:37

That's ok, delay letting us have the vaccine and we risk infecting everyone again. Very wise.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/03/2020 15:37

We are leaving the EU.

Corbid19 is a pandemic. The WHO doesn't do borders.

Of all the stupid things to bring Brexit into....

Lotuscup563 · 16/03/2020 15:38

So all the other non EU countries will have a delay in getting the virus too? Or just the UK..........Hmm

Please! Utter nonsense!!

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 15:39

I am not quite sure Brexit has anything to do with vaccine development, OP.

Rhubarbpeony · 16/03/2020 15:39

Ah - so some of you haven’t seen the news.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/coronavirus-vaccine-delays-brexit-ema-expensive

We have already pulled out of the EMA, the organisation which will give EU countries timeous and low cost access to the vaccine.

Believe me, we are about to start waking up to the consequences of this decision.

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 16/03/2020 15:42

The whole point of this transition period was that nothing changes during this period of time?

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 15:43

It's a pandemic. Global.

How do you think smallpox was eradicated? The EU bloc wasnt considered when that disease was eradicated.

ProfessorPollington · 16/03/2020 15:44

They're immune to facts already.

CoronaToner · 16/03/2020 15:44

Oh come on ... Really? Bringing in brexit is not helpful! And nor is trying to make people feel bad for their political decisions at a time when people are worried for their health.

Rhubarbpeony · 16/03/2020 15:45

We left the EMA on 30 December 2019, in a really extraordinary case of very bad timing.

We could have mitigated this by agreeing to a regulatory alignment with the EMA but at the time Boris Johnston ruled that out on the basis that it would be an infringement on our sovereignty. Sadly, sovereignty can’t buy you bulk purchase orders of vaccines.

OP posts:
Rhubarbpeony · 16/03/2020 15:47

And nor is trying to make people feel bad for their political decisions at a time when people are worried for their health.

Isn’t that convenient? Every time we face a really shitty and awful consequence of Brexit, we’re not allowed to draw it to the attention of those who voted for it because it might make them feel bad?

I want people to feel bad. I want us to rejoin the EU at some point, and that’s going to take a lot of people facing up to the reality of what they voted for.

OP posts:
Popuppippa · 16/03/2020 15:48

I wonder what China and the USA will do?

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 15:49

Aside from that, UK is still part of EMA until December this year. We are in the transition period. A small but significant fact.

Megan2018 · 16/03/2020 15:49

I feel fine thanks, still glad we left.

Rhubarbpeony · 16/03/2020 15:50

Trump attempted a hostile takeover of the German company currently working on a vaccine - www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/15/trump-offers-large-sums-for-exclusive-access-to-coronavirus-vaccine

Luckily it didn’t work. Not sure about China - I would be surprised if they weren’t working on their own but I haven’t looked into it.

OP posts:
Seventyone72seventy3 · 16/03/2020 15:50

Being members of the EU gave us lots of tangible benefits when it came to sharing information, resources etc. We decided we didn't want to share - and now people are complaining that we can't have exactly the same as the member countries which didn't decide to leave? Incredible.

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 15:50

So you want 17.2M people to feel bad for you?

Go for it..... I'm certain they're sobbing into their hand gel and loo rolls....

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 15:52

@Megan2018 another turkey here feeling okay about my decision too.

Rhubarbpeony · 16/03/2020 15:52

We have already withdrawn from the EU’s emergency bulk-buying mechanism for vaccines and medicines.

OP posts:
PerkingFaintly · 16/03/2020 15:53

Shit, I hadn't seen that.

So according to that article, we've already left the EU's bulk-buying mechanism for drugs, which is exactly for emergencies like this.

And we're due to leave the European Medicines Agency (evaluation arrangements for new drugs) on 30 Dec. We don't yet have out own separate system for drugs evaluation and regulation set up, and are unlikely to be able to do so in time for this pandemic.

We will just have to align with the EMA regs until we get ourselves sorted out.

Sod Johnson's "take back control, we don't take rules" shit. This is a time to work as a team, not pretend we got through the war on our own.Hmm
