' Mark Rutte is first PM to address Dutch nation since 1973 over #coronavirus, warning it is an unprecedented peacetime event. But Netherlands will not follow suit in imposing full national lockdown. Along with UK, Dutch approach predisposed to herd immunity measures.'

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:51

Now, this advice about avoiding all unnecessary social contact, is particularly important for people over 70, for pregnant women and for those with some health conditions.

So third, in a few days’ time – by this coming weekend – it will be necessary to go further and to ensure that those with the most serious health conditions are largely shielded from social contact for around 12 weeks.

From the text of Boris' speech here: www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-on-coronavirus-16-march-2020

No clarity on what is a "serious health condition" though.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:52

'Rutte says Dutch will listen to public health experts and control #coronavirus spread by building group immunity - a process that could take many months. "Those who have had the virus are usually immune afterwards. Just like in the old days with measles", he says.'

CricketCrocket · 16/03/2020 18:52

I watched it and thought they said that the following should self isolate for 12 weeks

over 70s regardless of health status
Pregnant women
Those adults who are eligible for a flu vaccination

What’s not clear is does that include children who have the health conditions that would mean they’re eligible for a flu vaccine as an adult.

Also, over 65s are offered flu vaccination but they don’t need to self isolate unless they’re 70+ or have health issues?

SunshineCake · 16/03/2020 18:54

@SansaSnark - thank you. I'm so not sure. The therapy person has left it up to me and I will ring re the physio as it is in a doctors surgery. I have a cough but I wouldn't say it was persistent. I've had it for a few days and cough 2-3 times a day.

winningwhilstlosing · 16/03/2020 18:55

Aaagh! I feel like banging my head on the wall. Why can’t they be clearer? I have a health condition and have the flu jab I have absolutely no idea what to do!

Horehound · 16/03/2020 18:56

So in-laws due to come Friday for the night.
They like to spend their times in pubs and mil has a public facing job role. I'm really not comfortable with them coming now but I know I will look like the mean DIL if I suggest they shouldn't come.

Surely they will change their minds based on this advice but I'm skeptical and my husband won't want to disappoint them. Hmmm

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:56

Winning it was muddled but I’m sure the detail will be up soon

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:57

@CricketCrocket- No, that's the unnecessary social contact group.

Self isolating for 12 weeks is only for those with "serious health conditions". I'm assuming we will be given details on exactly who this is in writing.

But I've linked Boris' speech above, so you can read it and see exactly what he says. To be fair, he doesn't say that they should self isolate, just that they should be "largely shielded".

Wheelyyyy · 16/03/2020 18:57

Joining...feeling a bit worried and unsettled about it all. I was fine until i went to the shops today.

Have birthday things going on next week, not sure if to cancel.

The other thing im really worried about is im a nurse. My colleagues have children. When the schools close theybe said they wont be coming in. That means the likes of me with older children will be really under it. Management are already brutal...im genuinely scared.

winningwhilstlosing · 16/03/2020 18:58

Thanks Marsha - I know your right. I just get so frustrated. Why isn’t this information ready to go as soon as the press conference is finished?

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:58

Lewis Goodall - 'This approach from the government, where ministers advise customers to “avoid” leisure businesses but doesn’t close them down has been described to me as “the worst of both worlds” by a businessperson. Footfall down yet further but unable to claim insurance/compensation.'

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:58

I agree Winning it really should be

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:59

It is insurance isn’t it

Pub owners etc no one turning up no recompense going to be tough

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 19:01

Alex Wickham - 'Incredible tweets from Times science editor here at press conference on Cobra modelling.

— they realised controlled spread would lead to 250,000 deaths
— now advise stronger measures
— had hoped for herd immunity to build
— but now realise not possible to cope with that.'

Poppiesway1 · 16/03/2020 19:02

Those who qualify for a flu vaccination have to stay at home?? What about if we are also frontline NHS staff? Confused

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 19:03

I’m a bit hmmm about why their modelling is off given that was the science they said they were basing it all on

Nether less im very glad they’ve acted

CrunchyCarrot · 16/03/2020 19:04

Thing is the flu jab is recommended for anyone 65 and over, so why do they say 70 and over should isolate or have minimal social interaction and not 65 plus?

Can't figure it out.

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 19:04

@Angryrant55 I agree- this is really going to damage small businesses. Footfall and custom will be way down, but they'll probably have no access to insurance, and they'll presumably still have to pay all their costs like normal.

This strategy must have been designed to protect some group, but I can't work out who? Does insurance not having to make large payouts help the stock market?

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 19:05

Maybe insurance would go bust

Thunderpunt · 16/03/2020 19:05

Unless we are forced to close (restaurant) we have no recourse to Business Interuption Insurance claims. We intend to stay open and push the take away side just to try and pay some bills over the coming months. Utter shit show

CricketCrocket · 16/03/2020 19:06

@Poppiesway1 I think I misunderstood and those eligible for a flu vaccination are in the social distancing group.

SabineSchmetterling · 16/03/2020 19:06

It took Italy 6 days to go from 10 deaths to 52. We’ve gone from 11 deaths to 55 deaths in 3 days. We are on a faster trajectory and clearly aren’t protecting our elderly and vulnerable.

Lumene · 16/03/2020 19:06

— they realised controlled spread would lead to 250,000 deaths

Might. Nobody knows. It’s just a model.

ajandjjmum · 16/03/2020 19:08

I think all of us in small businesses are just going to have to adapt and aim to cover costs over the coming months, as there is no way we can claim business interruption.

Same with travel insurance claims though - just cancelled a trip to Australia in April. We can go, so no travel claim, but would spend the first 14 days in quarantine.
