But the WHO said children have died!! I’m loosing my mind here, I know it was on the tv very quick....but they said it...and now they are not mentioning it at all!

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:19

Rachel Wearmouth - 'Teaching unions have released a statement after meeting with education secretary Gavin Williamson today. Joint NAHT & ASCL statement: “The most immediately pressing challenge is the difficulty in keeping schools open with growing numbers of staff having to self-isolate.'

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:19

Beth Rigby - 'From the weekend the over 70s, those with serious health condition and pregnant women will be asked make sure their are “shielded from social contact” for 12 weeks.'

SunshineCake · 16/03/2020 18:20

It really isn't confusing re the seven and fourteen days insulation.

If you live alone and have symptoms then stay home alone for seven days.

If you live with one other person or more and one has symptoms then you all stay insulated for 14 days to give everyone else who catches it time for it to show.

I am less sure about what counts as unnecessary travel. I have a physio appointment and a therapy session due this week. I could manage without obviously but I just don't know what to do. I would appreciate any advice, thank you and thank you these threads.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:20

Is there a summary of the instructions anywhere?

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:21

Doing a very rough calculation, about 1.8% of the UK's population is employed by the NHS. So if you say that roughly 1.8% of parents are healthcare workers, you could then open schools/provision with a skeleton staff for those pupils?

If parents are mostly able to work from home, there's less need to send children to grandparents. However, people who rely on grandparents for childcare will probably send them anyway in the holidays- those kids are at less risk of passing something on if they haven't been in school.

FWIW, I'm still not sure if it's the right time to close all schools yet- but I'm not convinced those are arguments to keep them open.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:21

Lol Corrie are trying to pull a fast one with that.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:22

Steven Swinford - 'Matt Hancock confirms the policy of 'shielding' for 12-weeks from this weekend is 'for the most vulnerable'.
It's for those with serious underlying health conditions.
Says that NHS will be in touch if you need to go into self-isolation.'

LuxLFC · 16/03/2020 18:23

I think it's important everyone watches the whole thing

might stop the multiple threads about the same topics...

SunshineCake · 16/03/2020 18:24

Sorry, isolated not insulated.

I know @nellodee. But what it shows is that the new cases number is completely whacked. Nations declaring so many deaths in a day have established outbreaks — with much higher new daily case totals.

Our death:cases ratio shows that we are undertesting compared to many of our peer countries. The tsunami is likely closer than they think.

OldQueen1969 · 16/03/2020 18:26

Regarding childcare issues - surely it wouldn't be hard for local authorities, in the event of school closures to designate a few schools specifically for essential workers to place their children, if they feel confident doing so, in some sort of state sponsored childcare?

Those teachers and support staff who are low risk could be incentivised with some sort of financial premium to volunteer as they are already DBS checked, and both staff and attending children should be priority tested in advance.

It doesn't seem like rocket science to me, but of course depends on the Govt ideological standpoint.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:26

Steven Swinford - 'They say it's important for over 70s, those who have had flu vaccine and pregnant women to avoid non-essential contact with others. But stronger advice on 12 weeks self-isolation is for over-70s with underlying health conditions. They were not clear at press conference.'

Jane Merrick Replying to Steven_Swinford 'if that's the case that's welcome but also absoutely extraordinary. communication of the most basic details totally muddled. And the NHS website hasn't yet updated. Thanks'

MotherOfLittlePeople · 16/03/2020 18:27

Has any one that has been due a smear this last few weeks or in the coming weeks been refused one due to Coronavirus spreading?

I am due one next month. Which I've been told to book and attend as soon as I get my letter. Only to ring today my surgery to see if I'll be able To have it when I'm due it (which is open but only seeing very urgent cases) to be told "we are taking it day by day maybe, maybe not"

MrsMeg1 · 16/03/2020 18:28

@lotuscup563

Yes It’s here;
WHO
"Once again, our key message is:
test,
test,
test.

This is a serious disease. Although the evidence we have suggests that those over 60 are at highest risk, young people, including children, have died"-

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:28

@SunshineCake I would view physio and therapy as essential, personally- there may come a point where you don't have access to these anymore, so I would make the most of going to them whilst you can.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:28

Mirror Breaking News - BREAKING Idris Elba tests positive for coronavirus and goes into immediate self-isolation.'

Oakmaiden · 16/03/2020 18:29

The undertesting is an interesting one, because it LOOKS like we are testing more widely than other countries. But that is the point. Whilst other countries have, so far, had one or two hot spots and concentrated testing within those hotspots, we have had to spread ours out over the entire country.

RubixCubix · 16/03/2020 18:30

Oakmaiden · 16/03/2020 18:33

Question: if he has no symptoms how did he get tested?

nancypineapple · 16/03/2020 18:34

So we are now self isolating for a week which will be 14 days from youngest dd becoming poorly. Please send gin as my teenage dd has started a rebellion! Apparently everyone at school will think she has it now and that's the most embarrassing thing ever....

CricketCrocket · 16/03/2020 18:35

I’m confused about the flu vaccination bit. Chris Whitty said that it’s those who get the flu vaccination as adults ago should self isolate for 12 weeks.

My 12 yr old gets the flu spray every year as he’s asthmatic - does he have to isolate for 12 weeks as he’d be offered the flu vaccination as an adult?

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:35

@OldQueen1969 As a twenty-something teacher with no dependents, I'd happily volunteer without a financial incentive, as long as I could balance it with supporting my current classes remotely.

I'd want to feel like I was doing something to help out, if schools did close long term.
