@MurrayTheMonk That is the current advice, yes- 14 days after first onset of symptoms to allow time for you to show symptoms and get past the phase where you are most likely to spread it. The logic is sound IMO, but this will be difficult for many people.

colouringinpro · 16/03/2020 18:09

beebity can you ask friends and family to send you food parcels?

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:10

Petra they couldn’t go into every detail but more detail will be online

MurrayTheMonk · 16/03/2020 18:10

I think it's the correct and cautious thing. I wish they'd said it two weeks ago.
But it's going to be bloody awful.

Beebityboo · 16/03/2020 18:10

OK maybe if he goes really early it will be OK? It's only a small village co op so he isn't in contact with many people and isn't symptomatic. I wasn't ready for this at all Sad.

Robert Peston - 'Just interviewed one of government’s infectious disease modelers neil ferguson who helped shape today’s plan to impose greatest restrictions on our freedom of movement in peacetime. He said that in three weeks or so we will know whether the PM’s instructions to self-isolate will need to be backed up with criminal sanctions and that significant restrictions on our way of life may be with us certainly till end of year and maybe longer. The good news is that if we do what we are told NHS will not fall over.'

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:11

I’m ok with the timing but the school thing is messing with my mind

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:11

Lewis Goodall - 'Hancock says more severe measures will be brought forward by the weekend, especially for the elderly.'

Sunshinesky1981 · 16/03/2020 18:12

It's a half arsed approach relying on businesses to do the right thing. We have just had a email from DS swimming club saying as there are no compulsory closures they will still be running, therefore payments will still have to be made. Obviously because they can't claim on their insurance they are passing the cost over . Either way DS is not going to a club, especially not swimming which are like breeding grounds at the best of times

OldQueen1969 · 16/03/2020 18:12

Sky news are reporting the 53 dead during their livestream.

I really dislike this continued reference to Underlying health conditions and the implication that it's a shame but they were going to die anyway. That may well be true, but it means people in their last painful hours have an extra layer of distress and discomfort added to them personally and also their families who may have to self isolate and be separated for them at the most distressing time because no-one is tracking where the fuck the transmission has come from. This could have been avoided IMO if it had been taken more seriously while we were still a hub of international travel from affected countries.

Clusterfuck is a fucking understatement.

Oh, and young and healthy people could also die. They said that, directly. So there needs to be a shift in attitude towards these deaths.

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 18:12

If there are 55 new deaths, using the government's logic from last week, then there are 55,000 cases in the UK now, right?

It's saying 55 dead x

defthand · 16/03/2020 18:14

18 new deaths? The new cases stat is utter bullshit then.

Justforthislifetime · 16/03/2020 18:14

55 Dead and that is 09:00 yesterday

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 18:14

ILove I’d want the U.K. to do the same as Europe and provide school and cc for health workers.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:15

Steven Swinford
'Only over-70s with underlying health conditions will be advised to self-isolate for 12 weeks from this weekend

The majority of them are being asked to follow same advise as everyone else for now - avoid non-essential contact with others.'

Don't most over 70's have HBP or another common underlying condition.

Janemarpling · 16/03/2020 18:16

If you close schools, parents will send them to the grandparents. It makes sense not to close them

Grandparents do the school pick up drop off. About 70 percent at my dds primary

SubjectMatterExpert · 16/03/2020 18:16

What about people who are vulnerable but have to keep working because they won’t have any money otherwise?

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 18:17

Christopher Hope -
'BREAKING NHS England: A further 19 people have died from #coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in England to 53.The patients were aged between 56 years old and 94 years old and had underlying health conditions.'

Janemarpling · 16/03/2020 18:17

Children are at a low risk....but are still at risk!!! We are being told they don’t really get affected by it

Who said they do get ill.

AvocadoOwl · 16/03/2020 18:17

Oooh Prof Neil Ferguson is my favourite! He always comes across as hugely knowledgeable yet calm and measured. Be interested to see this interview.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 16/03/2020 18:17

I have an underlying condition that means I’m out of breath if I’m moving. It’s not lung related, but circulation related (although consultant number 1 was unsure and passed me on to consultant number 2 - that appointment has been cancelled which is understandable). So if I did catch coronavirus would the reduced lung function make my breathing worse or not affect it? Nobody knows. And I’m a teacher so off to work as usual with 1200 students in a small (size wise!) school, and not at all amused at having to be this government’s guinea pig.

Also agree with pps that the press conference couldn’t have been more vague. Some leadership. I can imagine Theresa May is at home with a large bottle of gin cackling at the tv every time Boris is on.

LarkDescending · 16/03/2020 18:18

On Monday's episode of Coronation Street, viewers will see Geoff ask Yasmeen if she sang happy birthday twice while washing her hands - but that scene was coincidentally written last year and filmed in January, and is not a direct reference to coronavirus.

nellodee · 16/03/2020 18:18

@defthand, though the new cases almost certainly is bullshit, you wouldn't expect it to be exactly in line with the death figures, as there is a time delay between testing positive and death. In the long run, and particularly given the change in testing criteria, the death figures will be the ones that will give the more reliable idea of growth.
