Danny Shaw - 'A prison officer has tested positive for #Coronavirus, Ministry of Justice says. The male officer from High Down Prison, Surrey, is believed to be first person in any UK prison to be confirmed as infected with the virus...'

Mrsappleby · 16/03/2020 16:42

The who conference has scared me, wtf is wrong with our government that they're not listening to them.

Lotuscup563 · 16/03/2020 16:43

Why are the WHO not making some things as standard for ALL governments to do?

Do they not have that power?

waspfig · 16/03/2020 16:43

Bbc news channel: 'prisoners that were in contact with officer have been placed in isolation as a precaution'.

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/03/2020 16:44

Just watching BBC now, talking about the number of recorded cases apparently slowing and how that's false.... discussion that people with respiratory symptoms in hospital are being tested. Yet a quick read around MN: there are MNetters spending hours on phone to 111 with themselves or a child or family member in several cases quite ill and likely with corvid 19, who can't get through to anyone or get advice or are being told they're not ill enough to go to hospital. So this cosy picture being given of everyone in a hospital who's a bit wheezy is being tested...…..

Madness.

SistemaAddict · 16/03/2020 16:44

I missed the WHO conference. I'm glad from what you are all saying. How are we not following the rest of the world in the action we are taking?

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 16:44

@Lotuscup563
WHO have no real power.

Givemeabreakpls · 16/03/2020 16:45

This is madness. What the hell are the government playing at? I expect just more ‘wash your hands’ rubbish.

ChequerBoard · 16/03/2020 16:45

WHO don't have the powers to force Govt to do anything. How would they do that exactly.

I don't think you can get much cleaner advice than that just given though:

"We have a simple message for all countries: test, test, test," he said - adding that the WHO has sent out almost 1.5 million tests to 120 countries.

All he needed to do was add 'for fucks sake Boris' at the end.

MurrayTheMonk · 16/03/2020 16:47

They aren't going to say any thing of use I don't think. It's embarrassing and it's dangerous.

Feelingsolost1 · 16/03/2020 16:47

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but department of health twitter is 3hrs late almost with figures, don't think it's ever been this late??

CrunchyCarrot · 16/03/2020 16:47

If the govt dither yet again, I don't know how people will take it, there's only so much before they take matters into their own hands.

DGRossetti · 16/03/2020 16:47

If other countries don't have any confidence in the UKs approach, based on WHO recommendations, then they can certainly prevent people entering from the UK. (Although with flights and ferries being cancelled that may be a bit moot). It may not be an issue now. But in 4 weeks time it might.

Skittlesss · 16/03/2020 16:47

Come on, BoJo, get ye out of Fraggle Rock.

Greentea93 · 16/03/2020 16:48

I don’t seem to read anything in the UK press about young people dying ( unless I missed it)? Foreign papers report a healthy 35 y old male died in France recently and yesterday a healthy 21 y old Spanish youth sports coach. There’s reports that Italy and Holland have 50% of their hospitalised cases are younger than 50.

waspfig · 16/03/2020 16:50

Conference starting now.

Fairineouf · 16/03/2020 16:50

That healthy 21 year old spanish youth sports coach unfortunately had leukaemia. Geez. Facts people.

woodencoffeetable · 16/03/2020 16:50

the WHO has no power as such, see their mission statement below:
healthydocuments.org/appendices/doc49.html

The objective of WHO is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health, as defined in the WHO Constitution, is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In support of its main objective, the Organization has a wide range of functions, including the following: To act as the directing and co-ordinating authority on international health work; To promote technical co-operation;

To assist Governments, upon request, in strengthening health services;

To furnish appropriate technical assistance and, in emergencies, necessary aid, upon the request or acceptance of Governments;

To stimulate and advance work on the prevention and control of epidemic, endemic and other diseases;

To promote, in co-operation with other specialized agencies where necessary, the improvement of nutrition, housing, sanitation, recreation, economic or working conditions and other aspects of environmental hygiene;

To promote and co-ordinate biomedical and health services research;

To promote improved standards of teaching and training in the health, medical and related professions;

To establish and stimulate the establishment of international standards for biological, pharmaceutical and similar products, and to standardize diagnostic procedures;

To foster activities in the field of mental health, especially those activities affecting the harmony of human relations.

WHO also proposes conventions, agreements, regulations and makes recommendations about international nomenclature of diseases, causes of death and public health practices. It develops, establishes and promotes international standards concerning foods and biological, pharmaceutical and similar substances.

Here we go

waspfig · 16/03/2020 16:52

Decisions taken in cobra for the whole of UK:

Right measures at right time blah blah

Moreau we need to go further

According to SAGE we are now approaching the fast growth part of the upward curve and without drastic action cases could double every 5-6 days

First if you or anyone in your house has those 2 symptoms you should stay at home for -4 days

cjt110 · 16/03/2020 16:52

14 days self isolation
