Test Test Test so we know where the virus is and where it’s going

Testing is the message

EYProvider · 16/03/2020 16:28

I think the cost of living is simply so high in this country that they can’t afford to close things down - the economy would collapse if they did.

Are house prices this high anywhere else in Europe?

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 16:29

Alex Wickham - ' The UK is heading towards advising against all but essential travel to most countries in the world'.

Lewis Goodall - 'Meanwhile, the Norwegian govt has said that breaking your quarantine, without good reason, will result in a fine of 20000 Norwegian Krone (£1600).'

Quartz2208 · 16/03/2020 16:29

exactly @MarshaBradyo the unfortunate thing is it hit skiing resorts at a holiday time and the movement from there was just to much to do

China locked down BEFORE the New Year celebrations so there was less movement

I think I must have been watching a different press conference they clearly dont know how to go beyond the test/test/test contain which is just not going to work now in Europe or the US. Both the UK and WHO need to come up with a strategy that will work

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 16:30

Why is everything heading towards and within weeks. Driving me crazy.

QueenofmyPrinces · 16/03/2020 16:30

Currently watching the WHO Press Conference - I feel like everyone who speaks is making sly comments that imply how badly BJ is handling this.

I almost feel embarrassed to be English.

fedup21 · 16/03/2020 16:30

What is out government playing at? Blush

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 16/03/2020 16:31

Switzerland is, de facto, declaring a national emergency and a pretty comprehensive lockdown - as expected:

  • non-food retail to close
  • restaurants and bars to close
  • any type of leisure venue to close
MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 16:31

Quartz I’m not watching but even WHO are in uncharted waters with an out of control pandemic. We are at a too late stage.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 16:32

And yep to the travel

MadameF · 16/03/2020 16:32

@missclimpson I went to Super U this morning that although shelves were thin on some things there was still pasta, toilet rolls etc. I don't think food will be a problem here.
I wish my 86 year old dad was here with me instead of the UK...

Lotuscup563 · 16/03/2020 16:33

Agree, it’s almost like the British ‘look stupid’
in our very slow reactions as if we don’t actually get what is going on

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 16:33

Pippa Crerar - 'Alarming that @CMO_England
Chris Whitty’s predecessor @UKAMREnvoy Sally Davies has decided the best way to tackle the coronavirus outbreak is to send her students home. This is not what the Government is currently advising.'

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 16/03/2020 16:34

Also to close as of midnight tonight:

  • markets
  • libraries, museums, etc.
  • service providers such as e.g. hairdressers

Restrictions in place as of midnight until at least 19 April

Up to 8k army personnel to support hospitals, logistics and security.

Security!!! The army, during peace time. In their own country.

missclimpson · 16/03/2020 16:35

@MadameF. I know we could go today, just wondering about tomorrow if lockdown happens? We are over 70 so have been self-isolating apart from food shopping. I am pretty sure the Mairie will organise something.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 16:35

Bloody hell Brexpat

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 16:36

Better than not but still it’s scary.

Givemeabreakpls · 16/03/2020 16:36

Just turned on bbc 1 for the cv special. Have the number of deaths been announced?

cjt110 · 16/03/2020 16:38

I don't have access to TV (am at work) so if anyone could verbatim put up what Bojo is saying I'd be grateful

School have set work in two subjects for those self isolating so far.
Home school has gone ok today. I've kept them busy and they have been out in the garden to make the most of the sunshine. There's no one else within about 10m in any direction if they are in the back garden and it's important that they get out to play while they still can.

My sister doesn't agree with closing schools and was shocked to find Sainsbury's had nothing she needed today HmmIt's hard to believe that we are related at times. She belittled and laughed at brexit preppers as did my mum's friends and other relations. They are not laughing now. I'd feel sorry for them but they were so arrogant and dismissive.

Come on boris. Let's hear what dithering and delaying you are doing next.

Will we see self isolation increase to 2 weeks I wonder?

Mrsappleby · 16/03/2020 16:38

@bananacakeZ mine too, I'm so relieved!

MadameF · 16/03/2020 16:39

@missclimpson Don't worry, the supermarkets will remain open, as will the small groceries, the markets, takeaways etc. It isn't quite as bad as the war, at least we don't have rationing as well. Can you try a Drive service?

SometimeSomeday · 16/03/2020 16:40

I watched a fair bit of the WHO conference. Why are we completely ignoring all of this advice? I can’t wrap my head around it!

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 16:40

Emily Ashton - 'New: This woman took her son out of school to protect his high-risk dad from coronavirus and was told she faced a fine for "unauthorised absence". DfE say this is still a matter for individual schools. Not sure how long that line will stand.'

Youngatheart00 · 16/03/2020 16:41

Bojo not on yet, another 5 mins or so.
