To feel upset about holidays

I know this is really selfish and entitled but is anyone else feeling a bit devastated that their holiday is probably totally fucked this year?

Due to go to Spain (Benidorm!) in 8 weeks and it’s looking very unlikely.

😭😭😭😭

I was due to take my five year old daughter to Disneyland paris at the end of the month. She's so excited about it and marks of the date every night before bed to count down. Waiting to hear from Disney as to when I can reschedule for, hopefully September, but I'm heartbroken at the thought of telling her.

Cakemonger · 16/03/2020 00:16

Flowers to so many on this thread who have lost out on special trips. In some circumstances cancelling a holiday is just annoying. In others, it is heartbreaking.

I'm tired of people with no empathy or self awareness taking out their own unhappiness and anger on others in the form of judgmental comments. Which basically means I need to unplug the internet Smile

MadameBee · 16/03/2020 00:19

@Camsie30

Aww that’s so crap Sad

Fingers crossed 🤞

Thanks OP

We will definitely look at UK options if our trips abroad are cancelled, however the things that DS loves to do are theme parks and water parks - so will have to keep an eye on wherther the ones in the UK stay open. He also loves museums, theatre, city sightseeing... so basically crowded places haha - will have to see if I can get him excited about counrty walks and quiet beaches instead Wink

MadameBee · 16/03/2020 00:24

Maybe lakes, and water skiing?

YANBU. I'm gutted that our holiday isn't going happen either.

And, more than that, I'm really unhappy football has been stopped too.

Is that outrageous enough for the judgey-pants on this thread?

Back to my Easter holiday, it was our annual trip to see DH's family. Once upon a time, we used to visit them in Syria, but obviously that hasn't been the case for many years now. Compared to what they have suffered through, Coronavirus is a picnic.

ViciousJackdaw · 16/03/2020 00:28

I'm disappointed about no holiday this year too. OK, I was only going camping in the Dales because I've just forked out for a new roof but still...

Everybody's disappointment is valid. We make plans, look forward, many of us scrimp and save, children get excited. To have that (and let's remember that some people can only afford a s*n holiday once a year) taken away through no fault of our own is upsetting. Yes, we all know it is for the greater good and we are complying. We are still allowed to be gutted about it though.

DoreensEatingHerSoreen · 16/03/2020 00:29

@Camsie30

Could you tell your DD that Mickey (or her favourite character) is not going to be there as they are going on holiday themselves (or are on a special mission or similar) but they'd heard that your DD was planning to come and as they really didn't want to miss her, they've asked if she can come a little bit later instead ... maybe even write a letter to your DD "from" the character?
It might soften the blow a little.

Hope you get to rebook and go soon! - maybe we'll end up there at the same time - we've booked for late August and really hoping things will be better by then

DoreensEatingHerSoreen · 16/03/2020 00:30

@madameBee not a bad idea at all Smile

BackforGood · 16/03/2020 00:30

YANBU to feel sad.
I am sad for my dd in particular - she's worked part time through the 6th from and has saved and researched to do some traveling after her A-levels. No knowing yet what (if anything) she will get back (did insure but.....).

Of course it is nothing in light of people dying and businesses going under, but that doesn't mean you can't be a bit sad.

HoldMyLobster · 16/03/2020 00:32

I'm sorry for everyone who's not getting their holiday this year.

Partly because you must be disappointed.

And partly because as a result of the halt in travel, right now DH is on the phone to one of his team, telling him not to come to work tomorrow because there is no job for him. Once he's finished that call he's got two more to make.

It's not a good day.

MadameBee · 16/03/2020 00:32

We have loads of water skiing and inflatable water parks here in Dorset - not as good as abroad I know, but still fun?

WriteronaMission · 16/03/2020 00:38

YANBU. We had planned to see our parents (different country) and make a holiday out of it this summer. Now it probably won't happen. Disappointed but can agree with decisions made.

It's okay to be disappointed. The CFs are the ones who kick up a huge fuss about it and blame all sorts of people for them missing out without looking at the big picture. You were excited about the holiday. Of course you'd be disappointed about it being canceled.

Mulhollandmagoo · 16/03/2020 00:47

I'm in your boat too!! We we're due to travel to Disneyland Paris today, we're a bit gutted too! We work really hard to be afford things like this and we've lost a fair chunk of money!

That said, it's all for the greater good and I can hold off for a few months and see how things go. I know there are people much worse off than me, we're all just muddling through this the best we can Flowers

@Wehttam there really is no need to be so rude to people, your posts were incredibly self righteous! Nobody is downplaying this situation, people are just also a little sad for themselves too and that's fine!

MrsBoomers · 16/03/2020 00:47

Honeymoon in Greece first week of June, I'm panicking we will not be able to go and lose our money, we worked so hard for this and planned it the year after our wedding due to finances. There is no way we will be able to sort something else as can't afford to. First holiday since 2016. Sorry to everyone else missing out on trips they've worked hard for and we're looking forward to Sad

Mulhollandmagoo · 16/03/2020 00:50

@DoreensEatingHerSoreen I really really hope you and your son get your trips ❤️ x

neveradullmoment99 · 16/03/2020 01:01

No. I dont care about holidays. I am worried about the health of the ones i love and myself.

bluebell94 · 16/03/2020 01:38

YANBU. Of course you can feel a bit sad, I would be too.
No one is saying they don't care about the virus and only about their holidays but people are allowed to feel upset that a holiday they've saved for and looked forward to now can't go ahead when planned! We hadn't booked anything yet and I'm pleased we didn't now Sad

Topseyt · 16/03/2020 04:00

Of course people are allowed to feel sad that a long awaited and much needed break which has been carefully planned and saved for now will not go ahead. For some people having this to look forward to has been part of what got them through some very challenging times. It doesn't mean that we aren't concerned and sad about the devastation that is Covid19 too.

I have concerns about my elderly parents, who I haven't seen in a while and who are very vulnerable. I now cannot go and see them, probably for several months. I'm worried about what the future holds there.

I also still hope that my DD will get her much anticipated holiday in July to mark the end of her A Levels and also the (please) a big step along the way in her recovery from severe mental health issues.

Somewhere along the line I wouldn't mind a holiday for all of us too. We've all been through a lot and it isn't over yet.

That is why people like Wehttam need to cut the self-righteous claptrap.

MissyNomer · 16/03/2020 04:08

You are bu to be devastated. Ywnbu to very disappointed though.

MissyNomer · 16/03/2020 04:12

Just saw you live in a great place for a staycation though!

MrsCat1 · 16/03/2020 04:35

All very, very sad that so many people will lose out on holidays. So many people's livelihoods will also be in jeopardy. But our health is the most important thing.

We are currently one week into a long awaited holiday of a lifetime in Asia, but are flying home today, 3 weeks early. ☹️

MinesaPinotPlease · 16/03/2020 04:35

It is fine to feel disappointed and not unreasonable.

We booked 2 holidays for 2020 back in September 2019.

Felt really proud we were so organised for once.

The 2 destinations? Oh yes we chose China and Northern Italy. Shock

We are going to face many challenges in the next weeks and months and it would have been easier if we had our holidays to look forward to - but we don’t :(

We are already on lockdown where I live (European country) so am going to spend some of my time researching destinations for 21 and 22 and having something to look forward to - albeit further out.

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 04:42

It's quite natural for you to be disappointed but try not to show it too much to people in real life, restrict it to Mumsnet. A lot of people won't be patient with your disappointment because there are far more serious issues at the moment. You may get some of that from posters on here but it doesn't matter, you're not likely to bump into them.

Hopefully you'll be able to holiday in the not too distant future. There have been a few posts from people who have had to cancel holidays so you're in good company.

Wine may help.

Tempuserregularposter · 16/03/2020 04:55

I'm disappointed as well. Like a pp this was a last hurrah family holiday, they are at an age now where they soon won't want to be holidaying with me and when they stop I will have to go on my own.
Feeling disappointed about my holiday, which I work hard for a look forward to all year, is just another one of my complex feelings. It doesn't mean I'm not worried about other things.
