Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

OP posts:

Currently it's advice, we do not have to adhere to it.
We can way up the risks and make informed decisions.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:16

Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when a large percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, thereby providing a measure of protection for individuals who are not immune

Ever heard of vaccination

I wonder how many people will have to die to ensure we get enough people who have immunity and have herd immunity?

It's one hell of a strategy.

Finally, a thread full of (mostly) sane people

wheresmyliveship · 15/03/2020 22:17

When I'm on MN I feel like we're about to enter The Walking Dead or 28 Days Later.

When I go out and about I see many other people doing so, just washing their hands a lot more, and it makes me feel more normal.

I'm struggling to see the level of panic on MN in real life. I'm not sure feeding everyone else hysteria is doing anyone any good at all.*

This. I’m happy to go into lockdown if and when instructed to, and I’m no Boris voter, but as is stands the numbers are very low, I am washing hands, I am not an “at risk” group and I am not socialising with an at risk group.

I will be far more exposed working in a school of 900+ unhygienic teenagers, and when this is all over I’d like my local community to still exist.

wheresmyliveship · 15/03/2020 22:18

Urgh, bold fail!

Ugzbugz · 15/03/2020 22:18

Because we have to go to work to get paid??? You want to watch TV, have gas and electricity supply, water, sewage system, doctors and nurses and dentists available, shops to sell you food, farms to produce food, banks to keep your money, the government and benefits system to keep going, public transport for those that cant drive, the AA and RAC to rescue people?

Plus you dont realise how many corporate companies will bully staff into coming in let alone start a disciplinary for those that have time off, these people will put themselves and their situations first. It's the awful world we live in, you dont honestly believe most of these billionaires give a shit about the mere staff working for them?

Mwnci123 · 15/03/2020 22:18

We are trying to support local businesses while possible.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:18

use people who are not over 55-60 or who do not have close contact with an at risk person don't have to stop going ou

Don't you think there is the possibility of getting the disease and passing the virus on on surfaces you touch to people who are more at risk?

MrsJBaptiste · 15/03/2020 22:18

Disappeared OP?

Looking at your post Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Why are you not? FFS, the world hasn't ended although you wouldn't know that reading some of the threads on here... 😩

EngTech · 15/03/2020 22:19

Spanish Flu in 1918 was bigger than this though

Cam77 · 15/03/2020 22:19

8 million “expected” to be hospitalized in the UK. Get this “government” out of power now and FFS do not send your kids to school tomorrow.

Scruffyoak · 15/03/2020 22:19

When I go out life seems as normal. I have avoided some situations but mostly carrying on as normal for now.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:19

Why are you not

Because of Italy,

Actionhasmagic · 15/03/2020 22:20

I’m astounded how people don’t realise how bad this is going to be

Mrsjayy · 15/03/2020 22:21

Do you expect reasturants and pubs to close ? People are entitled to go about their lives we can't all be "self isolating"

megletthesecond · 15/03/2020 22:21

No idea.
We even skipped parkrun this weekend, we'll run individually in the week instead. We went for a walk and in the garden.

I've seen photos on FB of friends in bars and theatres. Fuck that shit.

Mentally it's been horrible tbh. I'll need drugging if this carries on for months. And I'm an introvert. But if distancing works at least we should be alive if incredibly depressed.

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 15/03/2020 22:21

To those talking about hysteria - is the Italian lockdown hysterical? What about Spain? What about France where all schools and shops have closed except supermarkets, along with all cafés and restaurants? What about Switzerland and Germany which have also closed most schools, and the Irish republic? All hysterical? And almost all those hysterical European countries have health services that are better able to cope than the NHS Hmm

Megan2018 · 15/03/2020 22:21

I’m not staying home until I have to. I’m not afraid of a virus.

I am avoiding some things, I live rurally and not venturing to large towns or cities unless vital. Washing hands more often. I am taking it seriously but refuse to live in fear for months and months.

Tomorrow my baby group is on and we are all going. Hand washing is compulsory on entry now and the lady that runs it cleans everything with dettol fastidiously anyway. Afterwards we will all go to the pub for lunch too.

There is no need to panic, just risk assess everything you do.

Meaniebobeanie · 15/03/2020 22:22

I don't understand how going into lock down will work long term for other countries I mean won't it just come back and lockdown again and again. I think we really need to think of the vulnerable who can die of it and they need to be so careful and isolate. But it seems so far as nasty as this virus is the young and healthy recover. So it surely makes sense if possible and if precautions are taken healthy people who can fight it to eventually get it (over time) do slow it down at least until a vaccine could be available though that could take a long time. But I know it's lives we are talking about and it's a tough decision either way a country deals with it.

Rhubarbpeony · 15/03/2020 22:22

Get this “government” out of power now

You’re absolutely right, what we need right now more than anything is an election.

HmmHmmHmm

Mrschainsawuk · 15/03/2020 22:23

All those saying avoiding soft plays I work in one and so does 12 other people who have bills to pay we all on 0 hour contracts I have a son I have to buy him food still we now have hourly cleans of everything including toys and play frame we are doing what we can to keep it open because if it closes I could lose my home we already are behind with bills and in debt low income family only one working

Fatted · 15/03/2020 22:23

Because there is no one else outside so I stand a slim to none chance of actually catching anything from anyone.

lamalama · 15/03/2020 22:23

Working with vulnerable people makes me take more precautions than advised to by the government.

Just because we are healthy and would probably not be very ill doesn't mean we shouldn't think of others around us.

Surely there’s a middle ground? As chomalungma says. Lockdown is unsustainable for the length of time predicted but dp and I believe it’s a ‘moral duty’ to do as much social distancing as we can to flatten the curve-eg not staying in the house but not going out where there’s crowds. Eg Takeaways: supporting local coffee shop without sitting in aNd catching or, even worse, passing something on.
