Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

People don't realise but the NHS have STOPPED testing people now. We have NO idea how big this is in our country, who has it..
They can't afford to test people anymore.
Problem is there is two extremes of this virus..
Some people are having regular flu symptoms, and some people are being completely thrown by it. They can't get out of bed, move, barely breathe. Hence why it is SO serious to the elderly and vulnerable in society. You might be able to fight it off but a lot of lives will be lost because they can't. Please just be sensible with who you are around and how often you are going out.

The rest of the world seem to be URGING the UK to take action. Italy is in an utter crisis as they didn't act quick enough.
Unfortunately for us the UK has said they are going for a herd immunity tactic, which means they want most of us to get it in order to become immune for long term effect. The PM has literally said "you will lose loved ones"
So the more you socialise, you are almost guaranteed to catch it , just be prepared for that and be sensible about who you are around.

Anyway, in other news I'm 70% sure I have it as I saw a friend who came home from Italy a week before it went on lock down and have been poorly since.
Extremely sore throat, headaches and now my chest is starting to feel tight. I've even had dizziness. Im on day 5 and not remotely improving if not getting worse.
I know some people will say "no cough or temperature you haven't got it" but those are the symptoms once it reaches the pneumonia stage- which is what the NHS is there for (not everyone gets to that- or it comes later).

Anyway I'm in a battle with myself about this virus because part of me hopes I do have it, can recover and move on. But obviously I'm scared too. My main concern is my baby is EBF and only 4 months old. I know babies and children seem to be doing okay too, but I'm also worried about my ability to care for her through it if I get it bad. Anyone else feeling this? Sorry for the HUGE reply.

Because if months of isolation end up being forced upon us I will be bloody glad I took the opportunity to live my life while I could.

Because I want to give my money to local business and help them stay afloat as much as I can.

Because I have to go to work anyway so I might as well go to things I enjoy too.

Because we could feasibly be looking at a year of this, so it would be stupid to isolate prematurely and then find it becomes intolerable when it’s even more dangerous to be in public.

Because someone has to buy groceries for elderly family, and since I am young and healthy it might as well be me.

Because the impact of the economy grinding to a halt could cause significantly more suffering, misery and death than coronavirus.

Is that enough reasons for you?

FlyingFlamingo · 15/03/2020 21:54

Because I will be at work tomorrow, the schools are still open so my children will be mixing with hundreds of other children tomorrow and dh works in a university that isn’t closing until Friday so what’s the point in staying in at the weekend?

Because if the only way to protect vulnerable groups is for me to catch it then that is what I need to do, I would rather get it now than when the system is even more overwhelmed in a few weeks time.

Because this summer is going to be shit and if today was my last chance to get out and take my children out scootering/skating then I wanted to take it. I want normality for them for as long as I can give it.

Yesterday I bought us a takeaway lunch whilst dd was in ballet, that’s only a small thing in the grand scheme of things but that business may not survive this and I wanted to support it.

DD’s brownie group have invited all the mums in for a treat for Mother’s Day on Tuesday. It’s going ahead because the school is open, so I’m going, how can I not support that nice gesture?

I have decided to avoid cinemas and soft play though. And we will isolate if we show any symptoms. And I am hand washing more than usual and unlikely to see my parents for the foreseeable future. So life is slowly changing and when the advice changes we will too.

I enjoyed the brief sunshine today, so much is about to be taken from us Sad

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:54

I'm not being stupid. I hate going to the supermarket. But I am carrying on with my dds sport plus running, going to work, chatting to school mums until I can't anymore.

Ameliabrowner · 15/03/2020 21:54

Why doesn’t anyone understand it is OVER HYPED
The majority of people will experience flu like symptoms!! Ffs stop sensationalising!!
It won’t go away, just like the flu doesn’t, live your life!

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:55

The majority of people will experience flu like symptoms! yes this is true. But I want to protect my aged relatives.

Deadringer · 15/03/2020 21:55

Staying home is not panicking.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 15/03/2020 21:57

My God the level of ignorance on this thread is astounding - do none of you read? FFS 😡

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 15/03/2020 21:57

I don't come in to close contact (within 1.5 m for 15 minutes) with anyone high risk. I am low risk, nobody in my family is high risk therefore I don't need to change what I am doing. We need people in the country to get it and I would rather get it sooner rather than later whilst work places are being understanding. I would expect those that are high risk to not be in places where they could catch it, cafes, theatres etc.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/03/2020 21:58

I'm carrying on as normal, we're not on lock down yet. I'm washing hands religiously,I do any way tbh. I'm not seeing my self isolating dad who is very high risk but otherwise as normal as possible.

AliciaWhiskers · 15/03/2020 21:58

Because I'm more likely to pick it up from work (NHS) than I am from a cafe.

110011pi · 15/03/2020 21:58

The economy had already collapsed, you just haven't felt the effects yet. Stay at home. This government does not have your best interests at heart. Listen to the hundreds of scientists screaming at the UK government to act responsibly.

okiedokieme · 15/03/2020 21:59

Because this cannot be stopped, we simply need try to control the speed of infection. If you have serious underlying health conditions or are older then isolate yourself, the well population needs to catch it so herd immunity protects the vulnerable. Loads we don't understand so this is theoretical

MaomiMak · 15/03/2020 21:59

Because the level of hysteria on here is the only place I have seen it.

I think the people who create these threads non stop are really enjoying it.

They love the hysteria and are feeding on it. Shows how much is going in their lives tbh.

I'm in a low risk group. I have a job to do. Life goes on.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/03/2020 21:59

Will op be coming back?

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:59

The economy had already collapsed, you just haven't felt the effects yet

No it hasn't.

Rhubarbpeony · 15/03/2020 22:00

Can you imagine how much happier and saner we would all be if mumsnet didn’t exist and we didn’t have all the drama llamas ramping our anxiety up to level ten million?

NotTerfNorCis · 15/03/2020 22:00

Went to the pub for dinner today and it was full - a lot of older people around. Maybe enjoying the chance to be out before this quarantine kicks in. We'll be limiting trips out soon, but my OH has no choice but to go to work on public transport.

catspyjamas123 · 15/03/2020 22:00

Has anyone actually NOTICED what is happening in the rest of Europe. Spain in particular. Handful of cases three weeks ago. Massive spike now. This is not hype.

Confuzzlediddled · 15/03/2020 22:00

I visited London this weekend, had 3 sets of theatre tickets, was booked into a small independent hotel, went to chinatown for food, Went to cafes and shopping in an empty Oxford Street. I had booked it all months ago. Oh and I am immunosurpressed with a number of underlying conditions. Life needs to go on, I could just as easily catch it in the office, or at my hospital appointment tomorrow...

Fralla · 15/03/2020 22:01

It’s difficult to not carry on as normal.

We’ve had a normal weekend with football, friends for sleepover, swimming and McDonald’s.

But why wouldn’t we? Work and school is still on and that’s surely where we’re most likely to contract anything anyway? So I TIL that’s cancelled I will be carrying on as normal.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 15/03/2020 22:01

My youngest DC (reception class) has a trip to a petting farm/soft play tomorrow. Feeling very twitchy about it. No other parents have batted an eye 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:01

Because the level of hysteria on here is the only place I have seen it

I've been away from mumsnet for a few months. It's still as ridiculous as ever. Lots of nice, sensible people increasingly drowned out by drama seeking hysterics.

TooTrueToBeGood · 15/03/2020 22:02

Because we are not all hysterical, paranoid fuckwits.

guffaux · 15/03/2020 22:02

We've been out for lunch saturday and sunday and will be going to a very popular place tomorrow-

we are not 'panic buying' or even getting a little extra in our shopping like we do at Christmas; we haven't come across empty shelves (yet)

we've both been to work and will continue doing so; we both follow personal and food hygiene guidelines and have embraced the extra hygiene procedures at our workplaces-

yes, we may well catch it, yes we are concerned about it, but the impact on our lives and wellbeing if we stay in and ramp up any anxiety for every venture out would be far greater
