Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

@emmythemummy you’re on day 5 and will probably be better very soon. Keep your baby close to you and feeding as you will be making essential immunity for them- and share your booby milk too!!

CorianderLord · 15/03/2020 22:04

I mean I still have to get the tube and go to work in C London and then get two tubes and a walk back so I might as well go to the supermarket or eat at a restaurant?

We've been told we'll face disciplinary if we don't come to work and I can't walk or drive. So considering I'm likely to get it anyway I may as well crack on.

Popl · 15/03/2020 22:05

Honestly? Because I don't have any symptoms and to my knowledge I haven't been in direct contact with anyone with a positive swab I actually have to. I am frontline NHS and there's no working from home!!

Jay135 · 15/03/2020 22:05

Millions of people won’t have jobs in 12 months so probably going out with a bang. They probably haven’t even realised this yet though

Callistone · 15/03/2020 22:06

When I'm on MN I feel like we're about to enter The Walking Dead or 28 Days Later.

When I go out and about I see many other people doing so, just washing their hands a lot more, and it makes me feel more normal.

I'm struggling to see the level of panic on MN in real life. I'm not sure feeding everyone else hysteria is doing anyone any good at all.

The govt have a plan. Time will tell whether it's the right one or not. I can't stand Boris or the Tories but I don't believe Boris sat in a room on his own for half an hour and came up with this out of the blue. There are scientists and doctors advising the govt.

Until we're advised to stay in I'll take precautions but life will still go on. If we shut down now the economy could be utterly fucked and as many people could die because of that. There's no simple and easy street to take here.

So tomorrow DH will go to work, DC1 will go to school, and DC2 and I may go to soft play, where we will be washing our hands scrupulously on entering, leaving and before eating anything.

And every day we'll play it by ear and see what decisions to make.

I wrote an account for my newspaper before I sank into a restless, haunted sleep.

I awoke to alien sounds of hammering from the pit, and hurried to the railway station to buy the paper.

Around me, the daily routine of life - working, eating, sleeping - was continuing serenely

as it had for countless years.

MaomiMak · 15/03/2020 22:06

I've been away from mumsnet for a few months. It's still as ridiculous as ever. Lots of nice, sensible people increasingly drowned out by drama seeking hysterics

Almost wish I hadn't joined. At the beginning of the year it was nice. People giving really good advice and fun stuff, etc.

Now it is as though it has been invaded by hysterical drama queens.

My god they love it. Planning things to do with their toddler for lock down. They actually want it to get bad.

It's worrying.

catspyjamas123 · 15/03/2020 22:06

If you carry on as normal you risk catching it and spreading it and that will overload the NHS. Even if you get it mildly what about the more vulnerable?

Peasfox · 15/03/2020 22:07

If I’m expected to be at work, where I could catch the virus, I have no intention of stopping the rest of my life

Peasfox · 15/03/2020 22:07

Unless told otherwise of course!

copycopypaste · 15/03/2020 22:07

Because I've not been told anything different by people who know a lot more about it than I do

Because I'm not hysterical

Because I'm not listening to scaremongering or social media bullshit

110011pi · 15/03/2020 22:08

And herd immunity is purely speculative, we've no idea whether this virus will indeed conform to this theory. An unnecessary gamble. At least that's what the majority of the scientific population are saying.
Good old maverick Britain and our Blitz spirit. I've never been more disappointed in this country, Brexit aside.

TSSDNCOP · 15/03/2020 22:08

In a very short time even a simple pleasure like going to a park will be taken away for what might be a long time. Our mental health and economy will take a body blow. Just for now, for just a little while, a risk-based simple pleasure has to be savoured.

sandybayley · 15/03/2020 22:08

We went out for dinner last night for DS1's 18th and DH and I went to the cinema this afternoon. We're both fit and healthy and all the DC are. The cinema was pretty empty and we were seats away from others. We've practiced good hygiene but assume at some point one us will get CV and we'll self isolate.

It would be madness to hunker down now. Businesses need to keep bringing in money so that staff can be paid. If at some point in the future we are told to not do go out then we'll comply.

squeekums · 15/03/2020 22:08

Cos i choose too
Im not gunna make my life harder before its mandated. We have no reason to isolate. If things i wanna do are open, im gunna do it

Tutlefru · 15/03/2020 22:09

What’s the alternative?

Not go to work?

Not leave the house for months?

Obsess about it?

copycopypaste · 15/03/2020 22:10

I was talking to a nurse today and she said we need people to catch it as we need the herd immunity

Google explanation as I couldn't word it properly - Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when a large percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, thereby providing a measure of protection for individuals who are not immune

BlusteryShowers · 15/03/2020 22:10

Because tomorrow my family all have to be at public facing work as normal and I am far more likely to catch/ spread it there than I am at a restaurant.

If i get symptoms, I will self isolate but otherwise I will be carrying on as long as I can

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:11

And herd immunity is purely speculative

Ever heard of vaccination?!

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:12

Isn't there a spectrum about carrying on as normal vs complete hunkering down?

98% chance of survival if you catch it.

Good odds.

But why not try to reduce further your chance of catching it?

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 22:12

Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Because I can think for myself thanks and life has to continue.

And all this "because they are not high risk", I most certainly am, but am resigned to dying early due to an existing health condition, so I'm living the life I have to the full.

catspyjamas123 · 15/03/2020 22:14

Oh well, nature’s pruning fork.

StoutDrinker2019 · 15/03/2020 22:14

Because people are not all scared. Because people who are not over 55-60 or who do not have close contact with an at risk person don't have to stop going out. Because we need to take responsibility for an economy that is going to be on its knees of we don't go out and support it. Ffs

Lifesnotapicnic · 15/03/2020 22:14

If I'm going to catch it be at work and sadly I have no choice there so I may as well carry on as normal

cdtaylornats · 15/03/2020 22:16

My friend went to the cinema tonight - she thinks there might be 6 people in the auditorium.
